Notice to Mariners.—No. 35 of 1918.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, and the Hydrographic Office, Washington, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.

SOUTH-WEST COAST.—SCILLY ISLES, ST. MARY’S SOUND.—PENINNIS HEAD.—FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.

Position.—At Peninnis Head light-station ; lat. 49° 54⅓′ N., long. 6° 18⅓′ W.

Description.—A siren giving two blasts every forty-five seconds, thus—blast 3 secs., silent 3 secs. ; blast 3 secs., silent 36 secs.

SOUTH COAST.—FALMOUTH HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—PROHIBITED ANCHORAGE.

Position.—Pendennis Castle ; lat. 50° 8⅔′ N., long. 5° 2⅓′ W.

Details.—Mariners are hereby warned that anchorage is prohibited within an area enclosed by lines joining the following points :—
(a.) Pendennis Castle Sem. △.
(b.) St. Anthony Point Lighthouse.
(c.) A flagstaff, 39 ft. in height, which has been erected on the coast northward of St. Anthony Point, at a distance of 3 cables and 30 yards from the lighthouse.

CANADA.

NOVA SCOTIA, SOUTH-EAST COAST.—WHITE HEAD ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 45° 12′ N., long. 61° 8⅓′ W.

New abridged description.—Lt. F. gp. fl. (4), ev. 24 secs., 55 ft., vis. 11 m.

Details.—The revolving white light has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics :—
Character.—A fixed and group flashing white light showing four flashes every twenty-four seconds, thus—flash, interval 3 secs. ; flash, interval 3 secs. ; flash, interval 3 secs. ; flash, interval 15 secs.

Elevation.—Unaltered.

Visibility.—Unaltered.

Power.—Fixed light 500 candles ; flashes 30,000 candles.

Remarks.—For half the period of the light—viz., for twelve seconds—a fixed light will be visible, through which the flashes will show ; for the other half of the period the light will be totally eclipsed.

EGG ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 44° 39⅔′ N., long. 62° 52′ W.

New abridged description.—Lt. gp. fl. (2), ev. 15 secs., 80 ft., vis. 14 m.

Alteration.—The character of the light has been altered from group flashing white showing three flashes every minute, to group flashing white showing two flashes every fifteen seconds, thus—flash, eclipse 3 secs. ; flash, eclipse 12 secs.

Remarks.—The power of the new light is 100,000 candles ; in other respects the light is unaltered.

CAPE BRETON ISLAND.—ST. ESPRIT ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 45° 37½′ N., long. 60° 29⅓′ W.

New abridged description.—Lt. F. gp. fl. (3) ev. 36 secs., 78 ft., vis. 14 m.

Details.—The revolving white light has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics :—
Character.—A fixed and group flashing white light showing three flashes every thirty-six seconds, thus—flash, interval 6 secs. ; flash, interval 6 secs. ; flash, interval 24 secs.

Elevation.—Unaltered.

Visibility.—Unaltered.

Power.—Fixed light, 500 candles ; flashes, 40,000 candles.

Remarks.—For half the period of the light—viz., for eighteen seconds—a fixed light will be visible, through which the flashes will show ; for the other half of the period the light will be totally eclipsed.

UNITED STATES.

ATLANTIC COAST.—NEW YORK APPROACH.—FIRE ISLAND LIGHT-VESSEL.—CORRECTION TO CHART NO. 2058.

Position.—Lat. 40° 28⅓′ N. long. 73° 11⅓′ W.

Correction.—On some copies of Chart No. 2058 the light of this light-vessel is incorrectly shown as being two fixed lights ; it is an occulting light as given in the Admiralty List of Lights, and the abridged description on the charts is to be altered to “Lt. Occ.”

INDIA.

WEST COAST.—BOMBAY HARBOUR APPROACH.—BOMBAY LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.

Former Notice.—No. 530 of 1917.

Position.—Lat. 18° 50½′ N., long. 72° 48′ E.

Description.—A light-vessel formerly exhibiting an occulting white light.

Remarks.—The light-vessel has been withdrawn.

Note.—The sketch of this light-vessel on Chart No. 2621 is to be expunged.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

OAHU ISLAND.—PEARL HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—TORPEDO RANGE-BUOYS DISCONTINUED.

On 23rd February, 1918, the following buoys, marking the torpedo range at the entrance to Pearl Harbour, were discontinued : Torpedo Range East Buoy, Torpedo Range Middle Buoy, Torpedo Range West Buoy.

MAUI ISLAND.—SOUTH-EAST COAST.—CAPE HANAMANIOA.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.—LIGHT TO BE DISCONTINUED.

About 1st May, 1918, a group flashing white light showing 2 flashes every 10 seconds, thus—flash 1 second, eclipse 2 seconds ; flash 1 second, eclipse 6 seconds—of 190 candle-power, will be established on Cape Hanamanioa.

The light will be exhibited 73 ft. above the water and 20 ft. above the ground, from a white pyramidal concrete tower, and will be visible 10 miles from 282° 30′ to 122° 30′.

Approx. position : 20° 35′ 13″ N., 156° 24′ 44″ W

On the same date Kanahena Point light will be permanently discontinued.

CHINA SEA.

PARACEL ISLANDS.—TRITON ISLAND.—POSITION.

The master of the steamer “Trigonia” reports that Triton Island, south-westernmost of the Paracels, lies about 5 miles more to the westward than is shown on the British Admiralty Chart, the chart position being about 15° 46′ 30″ N., 111° 14′ 30″ E.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—LIME POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.

About 1st May, 1918, the characteristic of Lime Point light will be changed from fixed white to group flashing white every 6 seconds, thus—flash 0·5 second, eclipse 1 second ; flash 0·5 second, eclipse 4 seconds—of 230 candle-power.

Approx. position : 37° 49′ 33″ N., 122° 28′ 39″ W.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands are open for sale or lease under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder ; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, New Plymouth, up to four o’clock p.m. on Monday, the 22nd July, 1918.
