HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased
to approve of the following amended by-laws made
by the Hokianga Maori Council, under the provisions of
section 16 of the Maori Councils Act, 1900, and its amend-
ments.

HOKIANGA MAORI COUNCIL.

THE Maori Council of the Hokianga Maori Council District,
constituted under the Maori Councils Act, 1900, hereby
makes the following amended by-laws under and by virtue
of the said Act, such by-laws to come into operation upon
approval of the Governor-General and the publication of the
same in the Gazette and Kahiti.

(F.) Dog Registration.

(Section 8, Maori Councils Amendment Act, 1903.)

  1. The fee for the registration of any dog of a greater
    age than six months, owned by a Maori within the district,
    shall be 5s.: Provided that when dogs are kept for the
    sole purpose of the management of sheep or cattle, or for
    the destruction of rabbits, the fee for registration shall be
    2s. 6d.

  2. The fee shall be paid and registration made at the
    office of the Council, or to persons authorized under the
    seal of the Council to receive such fee and make such
    registration.

MANGONUI MAORI COUNCIL.

THE Maori Council of the Mangonui Maori Council District,
constituted under the Maori Councils Act, 1900, hereby
makes the following amended by-laws under and by virtue
of the said Act, such amended by-laws to come into opera-

Election of Member of Southland Land Board.

NOTICE is hereby given that Mr. James King, of Black-
mount, Farmer, has been duly nominated as a member
of the Land Board of the Southland Land District for the
next ensuing term. There being no other nominations, and
he being otherwise eligible, I hereby declare the said JAMES
KING to be duly elected a member of the said Land Board
for the said district.

Te Makarini Scholarships tenable at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition in the year
1918. One of these scholarships, to be called the Senior
Makarini Scholarship, is open to all Maori boys under sixteen
years of age at the end of the month next preceding the
month of the examination. The other two scholarships, to
be called the Junior Makarini Scholarships, are open to Maori
boys under fourteen years of age at the end of the month
next preceding the month of the examination. One of
the junior scholarships is reserved for competition amongst
candidates from Native village schools only, the other is
open to Maori boys attending any school in the Dominion.
The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions
set forth in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini
Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Regu-
lations relating to Native Schools, except that for the Junior
Scholarship the age limit is now fourteen years, and that for
the senior examination the work required is that of Standard
VI instead of Standard V. The examination will be held
at convenient centres on the 2nd and 3rd of December,
1918.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as
to reach the Department not later than the 30th of Septem-
ber, 1918.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding
institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the
Director of Education, Wellington.
