loam on a clay formation ; well watered. Altitude, 1,200 ft. to 2,000 ft. above sea-level. Situated about five miles from Waiwera Railway-station. There is a formed road for about three miles, but there is no road for the remainder of the distance.

SECOND-CLASS LAND.

Lake County.—Kawarau Survey District.

Sections 9 and 11, Block VII: Area, 341 acres 3 roods 9 perches. Capital value, £175. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £4 7s. 6d. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £3 10s.

Weighted with £37 2s., valuation for fencing.

Steep and broken land, covered with fern and light tussock, but poorly grassed ; suitable only for summer grazing. The soil is of a light shingly nature on a rock and clay formation ; watered by gullies. Altitude, 2,500 ft. to 3,000 ft. above sea-level. Situated on Crown Terrace, about four miles from Arrowtown Post-office. There is a formed road to within half a mile of the sections; thence access is by unformed surveyed road.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General, this eighteenth day of January, one thousand nine hundred and eighteen.

Warrant apportioning the Cost of maintaining Portion of the Manawatu Gorge Road in the Kairanga County.

LIVERPOOL, Governor-General.

WHEREAS by section one hundred and nine of the Public Works Act, 1908 (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), it is provided that in any case where a road in one district is largely used by or for the purpose of traffic to or from any other district or districts, and affords access to or from such districts, and the Governor-General is of opinion that it is equitable that the latter district or districts should contribute towards the cost of constructing or maintaining the whole or any portion of such road in the former district, the Governor-General may from time to time apportion the cost of constructing or maintaining the whole or any portion of such road among the local authorities of the respective districts as he thinks fit ; and for that purpose, and to enable effect to be given thereto, the provisions of section one hundred and nineteen thereof shall, mutatis mutandis, apply in the case of the construction or reconstruction of the road, and the provisions of section one hundred and twenty in the case of the maintenance of the road :

And whereas a dispute has arisen between the local authorities hereinafter mentioned on the question of the maintenance of the portion of road hereinafter mentioned :

And whereas by the said section one hundred and twenty it is, inter alia, provided that the Governor-General may, with a view of determining what proportion (if any) of the cost of maintaining, repairing, improving, or reconstructing any work should be borne by any local authority, direct any Magistrate or other person to be a Commissioner to inquire into and report to him upon any matter which he shall deem necessary to enable him to determine any such question as aforesaid :

And whereas Commissioners were appointed for the purpose aforesaid, and an inquiry was duly held :

And whereas such Commissioners did report to the Governor-General, after due inquiry, their opinion thereon :

And whereas the Governor-General is of opinion that it is equitable that the cost of maintaining the portion of the road mentioned in the Schedule hereto should be provided and paid in the manner and in the proportion hereinafter set forth :

Now, therefore, I, Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority vested in me by the said Act, do hereby direct that from and after the date of this Warrant the cost of maintaining the portion of road described in the Schedule hereto (less any contribution, if any, which may be made by the Government) shall be provided and paid by the local authorities hereinafter mentioned in the following proportions—viz., the Kairanga County Council shall pay ten (10) per centum, the Dannevirke County Council shall pay three (3) per centum, the Oroua County Council shall pay eight (8) per centum, the Pahiatua County Council shall pay ten (10) per centum, the Rangitikei County Council shall pay three (3) per centum, the Waipawa County Council shall pay three (3) per centum, the Woodville County Council shall pay ten (10) per centum, the Dannevirke Borough Council shall pay eight (8) per centum, the Feilding Borough Council shall pay five (5) per centum, the Palmerston North Borough Council shall pay twenty-four (24) per centum, the Woodville Borough Council shall pay eight (8) per centum, and the Pahiatua Borough Council shall pay eight (8) per centum of such cost respectively.

And I do hereby direct that any contribution hereby required to be made as aforesaid by the Dannevirke County Council, the Oroua County Council, the Pahiatua County Council, the Rangitikei County Council, the Waipawa County Council, the Woodville County Council, the Dannevirke Borough Council, the Feilding Borough Council, the Palmerston North Borough Council, the Woodville Borough Council, and the Pahiatua Borough Council shall be paid from time to time out of the funds of the said County and Borough Councils, within a period of thirty days after demand in writing made by or on behalf of the Kairanga County Council, and such payments shall be made from time to time to the Clerk of the said Council for and on account of such County and Borough Councils.

And I do hereby cancel and annul the Warrant dated the tenth day of June, one thousand nine hundred and nine, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 49, page 1608, of the seventeenth day of the same month, apportioning the cost of maintaining the said portion of road.

SCHEDULE.

ALL that portion of the Manawatu Gorge Road, situated in the Wellington Land District, Kairanga County, commencing at the south-eastern boundary of the Oroua County, and terminating at the western boundary of the Pahiatua County. As the said portion of road is more particularly delineated on the plan marked P.W.D. 41024, deposited in the office of the Minister of Public Works at Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured red.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General, this eighteenth day of January, one thousand nine hundred and eighteen.
