Street, in the City of Dunedin, for the purpose only of the sale of medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently needed, be closed in the evenings of working-days as follows :— On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 9.30 p.m., with the following exceptions— (1.) The working-day immediately preceding Christmas Eve, and the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be as follows: (a) should such working-day fall on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, the closing-hour shall be 8 p.m. ; (b) should such day fall on Friday, the closing-hour shall be 9.30 p.m. (2.) The working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m. (3.) The week in which the Winter Show is held in the City of Dunedin, when the closing-hour on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shall be 8 p.m., on Friday at 9.30 p.m., and on Saturday at 9 p.m., subject, however, to the closing at 1 p.m. for the statutory half-holiday on either Saturday or on a special day during the week pursuant to section 19 of the Act. (4.) Should the occupier of any shop bound by the provisions of this requisition under and by virtue of the provisions of section 19 of the Act observe any special day therein provided for other than Saturday as the statutory closing-day, and re-open his shop at 7 p.m. pursuant to section 18 (d) of the said Act, then in such case the closing-hour on the evening of that day for any such shop shall be 8 p.m. (5.) The working-day immediately preceding Good Friday, 9.30 p.m. Provided always that this requisition shall be subject to the provisions of the Act in respect of the statutory half-holiday :
And whereas the Dunedin City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops within the City of Dunedin :
And whereas I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, am satisfied that all the occupiers of chemists’ shops in the City of Dunedin affected by section 3 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1915, as amended by section 3 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1917, have been afforded an equal right to share in the profits of the business carried on by such specified shop :
Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, and of section 3 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1915, I do hereby direct that on and after the 24th day of May, 1918, all chemists’ shops in the City of Dunedin, except such specified shop, shall be closed accordingly.
The notice gazetted on the 12th day of October, 1916, fixing the closing-hours of all chemists’ shops in the City of Dunedin, shall be deemed to be cancelled from the date of coming into operation of this notice.
