WANGANUI HARBOUR LIGHT.

THE Wanganui Harbour Board have notified that the two movable white beacons showing red lights at night, situated on North Head, for guiding vessels across the river entrance are to be moved from western to east side of the flagstaff.

Heads Wharf, Castlecliff.—A white light with a green stripe will be shown from the lower end of the Main Wharf, and a white light with a red stripe will be shown from the lower end of the Dredge Wharf. The above-mentioned changes will be made on the 14th May, 1918.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 2054; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter v, page 157; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1918, page 305, and plan facing page 304.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne; and the Minister of State for Communications, Tokyo, are published for general information.

AUSTRALIA.

SOUTH COAST, RIVOLI BAY. — PENGUIN ISLAND LIGHT. — (1.) INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.—(2.) SIGNAL-STATION AND FOG-SIGNAL TO BE DISCONTINUED.

MARINERS and others are hereby notified that—

(1.) The single-flashing light with white and red sectors on Penguin Island will be replaced by a group-flashing light with white and red sectors.

(2.) The signal-station and fog-signal will be discontinued, and the lightkeepers withdrawn on or about 20th May, 1918.

Position.—Near the south extreme of Penguin Island. Lat. 37° 31' S., long. 140° 1' E.

Structure.—Former white circular stone tower 39 ft. high.

Details.—The single-flashing light with white and red sectors will be replaced by a new light having the under-mentioned characteristics.

Character.—Group-flashing light with white and red sectors, showing two flashes in quick succession every ten seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 8 secs.

Sectors.—Red from 123° (S. 62° E. mag.) to the shore westward of the light; white elsewhere.

Elevation.—85 ft.

Visibility.—White, 15 miles; red, 7 miles.

Power.—White, 2,500 candles; red, 1,000 candles.

Note.—The light will be unwatched. No further notice will be given.

Remarks.—The single-flashing light with white and red sectors will be extinguished from about 25th April, 1918, in order that the necessary alteration in the apparatus may be carried out. In the interval a temporary group-flashing light with white and red sectors as defined above, showing two flashes every ten seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1 sec.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 8 secs.—will be exhibited from a temporary wooden structure near the lighthouse.
