GULF OF ADEN.
STRAITS OF BAB-EL-MANDER APPROACH.—JEZIRAT SOWABIH (BROTHERS).—EXISTENCE OF A ROCK.
Position (approximate).—Lat. 12° 28′ N., long. 43° 23′ E.
Description.—A pinnacle rock with a depth of 1½ fathoms.
BAY OF BENGAL.
MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO.—BENTINCK ISLAND.—EXISTENCE OF A ROCK NORTHWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 1¼ miles northward of the northern end of Bentinck Island. Lat. 11° 52′ 37″ N., long. 98° 0′ 40″ E., on Chart No. 216A.
Description.—A rock awash at low water.
Remarks.—The rock is known as “Zahora Rock.”
CHINA.
EAST COAST.—GULF OF PECHILI.—CHING WANG TAO.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.
Position.—Near south-western extreme of bluff. Lat. 39° 54½′ N., long. 119° 37½′ E.
Description.—A group occulting white light.
Remarks.—The light has been permanently discontinued and is to be expunged from the charts.
Note.—The words “Site of Lt. Ho.” are to be inserted against the astronomical position in the title of Charts Nos. 2357 and 3378.
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
FIJI ISLANDS.
(1.) Vanua Levu, Soni-soni Passage Approaches.—Existence of Rocks.
The undermentioned coral patches have been found to exist in the western approaches to Soni-soni Passage :—
Position. Depth.
(a.) Lat. 16° 54′ 55″ S., long. 178° 56′ 55″ E. . . 8 feet.
(b.) „ 16° 55′ 10″ „ „ 178° 57′ 00″ „ . . 8 feet.
(c.) „ 16° 55′ 18″ „ „ 178° 57° 58″ „ . . 12 feet.
(d.) „ 16° 55′ 20″ „ „ 178° 59′ 32″ „ . . 3 feet.
(e.) „ 16° 59′ 20″ „ „ 178° 57′ 30″ „ . . 12 feet.
The positions given are those on Chart No. 382.
(2.) Viti Levu, Wakaya Lagoon.—Existence of Rock.
The undermentioned coral patch has been found to exist near the middle of Wakaya lagoon :—
Position : Lat. 17° 36′ 25″ S., long. 179° 2′ 40″ E.
Depth : 4 fathoms.
URUGUAY.
RIO DE LA PLATA.—ARCHIMEDES BANK.—ALTERATION IN POSITION OF LIGHT, WHISTLE, AND SUBMARINE BUOY.
New Position.—At a distance of about 1¼ miles north-eastward from former position off the western side of the bank. Lat. 35° 11′ 58″ S., long. 56° 10′ 45″ W., on Chart No. 1749.
Description.—A light and whistle buoy, fitted with a submarine bell, and exhibiting a flashing red light every six seconds, thus : Flash 1 sec., eclipse 5 secs.
The submarine fog-bell gives two strokes every thirty seconds.
The buoy is painted red and marked with the letters “M.O.P.—R.O.U.” on the upper portion.
Note.—The note “experimental” shown on the charts against this light, whistle, and submarine-bell buoy is to be expunged.
AUSTRALIA.
NEW SOUTH WALES.—EAST COAST.—UNCHARTED ROCKY LEDGE IN VICINITY OF SPLIT SOLITARY ISLAND.
Masters and others are hereby notified that an uncharted rocky ledge exists inshore from Split Solitary Island, the bearings of the ledge being—
From Split Solitary Island, N. 48° 50′ W. (mag.).
From White Bluff, N. 65° E. (mag.).
The minimum depth obtained was slightly less than four fathoms.
Charts affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 1026, Solitary Islands and adjacent coast; Admiralty Chart No. 1027, Coff’s Harbour to Evans Head.
It is considered that vessels of moderate or deep draught should avoid passing inside of Split Solitary Island.
VICTORIA.—PORT PHILLIP.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that on or about 1st August, 1918, the following alterations were to have been made to the system of lighting the buoys in the south and west channels, and a light would be established on the Obelisk in Queenscliff.
No. 10 BUOY, SOUTH CHANNEL.
The present flashing white light to be altered to a flashing red light, the period to remain as at present.
No. 2 ROYAL GEORGE BUOY, WEST CHANNEL.
The present double-flashing red light to be altered to an occulting red light, with a light period of one second, followed by an eclipse of a similar period.
OBELISK, QUEENSCLIFF.
A green occulting light, with the same period as that of the light in the lower light, to be exhibited from the top of the Obelisk, situated west of the lower light, Queenscliff.
POINT GELLIBRAND PILE LIGHT.
The fog-signal to be altered to a low-pitched note of two seconds duration, sounded every minute, and under favourable conditions should be heard at a distance of four or five miles.
