CHALKY OR DARK CLOUD INLET.—SUNKEN ROCK OFF ENTRANCE TO INLET.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 9th September, 1918.
CAPTAIN BOLLONS, of the Government steamer “Hinemoa,” reports the existence of a sunken rock in the western entrance to Chalky Inlet, and situated about mid-channel. The weather was bad, with a heavy S.W. sea. Judging from the break there is about six fathoms of water over the rock.
The following bearings and marks give the position of rock fairly accurately: High cliff west of Breaker Point, 18° (north magnetic); south end of Passage Island touching north end of Zero Nugget, 86° (N. 68° E. magnetic).
Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 720; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter x, page 296.
GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
