Notice to Mariners.—No. 50 of 1918.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, and the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.
SOUTH - EAST COAST. — SOUTH FORELAND. — PROHIBITED ANCHORAGE NORTH-EASTWARD OF.
Position.—South Foreland Lighthouse, lat. 51° 8½′ N., long. 1° 22¼′ E.
Details.—Mariners are warned that anchorage is prohibited for all vessels within an area bounded as follows:—
Limits of prohibited anchorage:
(a.) On the North.—By a line drawn from South Goodwin light-vessel in a 290° (N. 56° W. mag.) direction to the shore.
(b.) On the East.—By a line drawn from South Goodwin light-vessel in a 180° (S. 14° W. mag.) direction for a distance of 19 cables.
(c.) On the South.—By a line drawn from South Foreland lighthouse in a 110° (S. 56° E. mag.) direction to the southern extremity of limit (b).
Variation.—14° W.
SOUTH COAST.—BRIGHTON.—WRECK SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.
Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 6¾ miles south-westward of Brighton West Pier. Lat. 50° 42′ 43″ N., long. 0° 13′ 8″ W.
Description.—A sunken wreck.
Remarks.—It is intended shortly to mark this wreck by an unlighted wreck-marking buoy.
VENTNOR.—WRECK SOUTH-EASTWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 4¼ miles south-eastward from Ventnor Pier. Lat. 50° 34′ 10″ N., long. 1° 5′ 50″ W.
Description.—A sunken wreck, with two masts showing 15 ft. above water.
ISLE OF WIGHT.—VENTNOR.—WRECK SOUTH-EASTWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 3¼ miles south-eastward from Ventnor Pier. Lat. 50° 33′ 30″ N., long. 1° 8′ 20″ W.
Details.—Two spars, believed to be attached to a sunken wreck, were observed in the above position; one of the spars was awash and the other projecting 5 ft. above water.
Note.—The symbol for a wreck with the year date “1918” is to be inserted on the charts.
VENTNOR.—WRECK SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.
Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 2½ miles south-westward from Ventnor Pier. Lat. 50° 33′ 20″ N., long. 1° 14′ 10″ W.
Description.—A sunken wreck of a steamer.
WEST COAST.—BRISTOL CHANNEL APPROACH.—CARNBEAK.—WRECK NORTH-WESTWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 1¾ miles north-westward of Carnbeak. Lat. 50° 46′ N., long. 4° 40′ 45″ W.
Description.—A sunken wreck.
Note.—It is intended shortly to mark this wreck with an unlighted wreck-marking buoy.
SHARPNOSE.—WRECK NORTH-WESTWARD OF.
Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 1½ miles north-westward of Sharpnose. Lat. 50° 55′ 3″ N., long. 4° 36′ W.
Description.—Sunken wreck, with mast showing about 3 ft. above low water.
Note.—It is intended shortly to mark this wreck with an unlighted wreck-marking buoy.
UNITED STATES.
ATLANTIC COAST.—DELAWARE BAY APPROACH.—OVERFALLS LIGHT-VESSEL.—ALTERATION IN LIGHT.
Position.—Lat. 38° 48′ N., long. 75° 1½′ W.
New Abridged Description.—Lt. occ. ev. 15 secs., 57 ft., vis. 12 m.
Alteration.—The occulting white light formerly exhibited from the mainmast of this light-vessel has been discontinued, and the light-vessel now shows an occulting white light every fifteen seconds from the foremast only.
Remarks.—Should the light fail a similar light will be exhibited from the mainmast.
WEST INDIES AND BERMUDA ISLANDS.
CERTAIN PORTS CLOSED BY NIGHT.—CAUTION APPROACHING CERTAIN PORTS.—DISCONTINUANCE OF AIDS TO NAVIGATION.
Former notice hereby cancelled.
Ports closed by Night.
Mariners are hereby warned that the following ports are closed between sunset and sunrise until further notice:—
(a.) Port Castries (St. Lucia).
(b.) St. George Harbour (Grenada).
(c.) Georgetown and New Amsterdam (British Guiana).
Caution approaching certain Ports.
Vessels approaching the undermentioned ports are to pay careful attention to any signals made by patrol vessels, and all orders received from them are to be immediately complied with:—
(a.) Kingston (Jamaica).
(b.) Port Castries (St. Lucia).
(c.) Bermuda Islands.
(d.) Carlisle bay (Barbados).
(e.) Port of Spain (Trinidad).
Lights extinguished.
The lights at the following ports and islands are extinguished:—
(a.) Havana (Cuba).
(b.) Harbours in Jamaica.
(c.) Myhlenfeldts Points (St. Thomas).
(d.) St. Johns (Antigua).
(e.) Guadeloupe.
(f.) St. Lucia.
(g.) St. Vincent.
(h.) Grenada.
(i.) Carlisle Bay and South Point (Barbados).
(j.) Nassau Harbour leading-lights (Bahamas).
(k.) Georgetown and New Amsterdam (British Guiana).
Mariners are hereby warned that it may be necessary to extinguish certain lights, and to discontinue or remove any aids to navigation, on the coasts of the Bermuda Islands and outlying reefs without further notice.
Note.—This notice is a revision of the former notice.
RED SEA, ETC.
GULF OF ADEN, PERSIAN GULF, ARABIAN SEA, BAY OF BENGAL, AND MALACCA STRAIT.
Caution with regard to Extinction of Lights.—Certain Ports closed by Night.
Former notice hereby cancelled.
- The lights at the following places have been extinguished:—
Jibuti and vicinity (except Ras al Bir); Puri; Shortt Island; Balasore; ————— —————; Penang and approaches; Singapore.
All lights in the Persian Gulf, and on the coasts of India, Ceylon, and the Bay of Bengal, are liable to be extinguished without notice. Vessels should arrange to arrive at their destinations during daylight hours.
- Certain ports closed by night:—
Vessels are prohibited from entering the Port of Massawa between sunset and 6.0 a.m., and they should not approach the port between these hours.
Vessels are prohibited from entering the Ports of Panjim and Marmagao in Portugese India between sunset and sunrise. Vessels will be permitted to leave subject to permission being obtained from the Captain of the Port.
Note.—This notice is a revision of the former notice.
AUSTRALIA.
NORTH COAST, CLARENCE STRAIT.—MARSH SHOAL BUOY TO BE REPLACED BY LIGHT-BUOY.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that the spherical buoy moored on the western side of Marsh Shoal will be replaced by a light-buoy, showing a group flashing white light, on or about 12th August, 1918.
Position.—The light-buoy will be moored in about 15 fathoms of water off the north-western end of Marsh Shoal, about three cables north-west of the existing red and white horizontally striped spherical buoy surmounted by a black staff and globe, which it will replace. Position will be approximately lat. 12° 5½′ S., long. 130° 56′ E., on Chart 1095.
