Details.—The south-western end of Venus’ banks, marked on the charts by a red and black vertically striped buoy, has now extended to about 200 ft. westward of the leading-line formed by the Tangaluma and Cowan Cowan light; vessels are warned accordingly.
The note on the charts is to be amended as follows: “Bank extending to the S.W. (1918).”
DUNK ISLAND.—WRECK NORTHWARD OF.
Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 6 miles northward of the northern end of Dunk Island. Lat. 17° 49′ 40″ S., long. 146° 10′ 30″ E.
Description.—A sunken wreck with mast showing above water.
MALAY PENINSULA.
SINGAPORE STRAIT.—TREE ISLAND.—WRECK SOUTHWARD OF.
Position.—At a distance of about 1½ miles southward of Tree Island light. Lat. 1° 7′ 45″ N., long. 103° 39′ 4″ E.
Description.—Sunken wreck of a Chinese junk.
PORTUGUESE ATLANTIC COLONIES AND ISLANDS.
(1.) CAUTION WITH REGARD TO EXTINGUCTION OF LIGHTS.
Former notice hereby cancelled.
(1.) Azores:
Caution.—All lights are extinguished with the following exceptions: Arnel and Ferraria Points in San Miguel; Cappellinhos (Comprida) Point in Fayal; Lagens Point in Flores.
(2.) Madeira Islands:
Caution.—All lights are extinguished except Porto Santo light.
Remarks.—Fora Island light will show a faint light if a vessel is in danger of running ashore.
(3.) Cape Verde Islands:
Caution.—All lights are extinguished.
(2.) CAPE VERDE ISLANDS.—TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS.
Entrance to the channel between St. Antonia and St. Vincent Islands from the northward is prohibited during the night. Entrance to Porto Grande is also prohibited at night; during daylight, all vessels wishing to enter the port are to wait orders in the vicinity of Passaro (Bird) Island: vessels not carrying out these instructions will incur the gravest risks. Careful attention is to be paid to signals made by patrol vessels, and all orders received from them are to be immediately complied with.
Note.—This notice is a revision of the former notice.
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
MAUI ISLAND.—SOUTH-EAST COAST.—CAPE HANAMANIOA.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.
On 1st May, 1918, a group flashing white light showing 2 flashes every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipse 2 seconds; flash 1 second, eclipse 6 seconds—of 190 candle-power, was established on Cape Hanamanioa.
The light is exhibited 73 ft. above the water and 20 ft. above the ground, from a white pyramidal concrete tower, and is visible 10 miles from 282° 30′ to 122° 30′.
Approx. position: 20° 35′ 13″ N., 156° 24′ 44″ W.
On the same date Kanahena Point light was permanently discontinued.
CALIFORNIA.
LOS ANGELES HARBOUR.—SAN PEDRO ENTRANCE LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.
About 1st August, 1918, the characteristic of San Pedro Entrance Light 2 will be changed to flashing red every 5 seconds—flash 1 second; eclipse 4 seconds—of 35 candle-power.
The light will be exhibited from a 3-pile structure with a red horizontally slatted daymark erected in 24 ft. of water.
SEA-COAST.—POINT MONTARA LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE CHANGED.
About 1st September, 1918, the fog-signal at Point Montara Light-station will be changed to an air diaphone which will sound 1 group of 2 blasts every 30 seconds—thus, blast 3 seconds, silent 1 second; blast 1 second, silent 25 seconds.
Approx. position: 37° 32′ 15″ N., 122° 31′ 6″ W.
SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—REDWOOD SLOUGH APPROACH.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.
About 1st August, 1918, San Mateo Light 2, flashing white every 10 seconds—flash 2 seconds, eclipse 8 seconds—of 75 candle-power, will be established in the position of San Mateo Beacon 2, which will be discontinued.
The light will be exhibited 18 ft. above the water from a red 3-pile structure with a horizontally slatted daymark.
Approx. position: 37° 35′ 15″ N., 122° 16′ 2″ W.
BRITISH COLUMBIA.
STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—SATURNA ISLAND.—EAST POINT LIGHT.—CHANGE IN CHARACTERISTIC.
About 1st July, 1918, and without further notice, the revolving white light at East Point Light-station will be replaced by a group flashing white light, showing 2 flashes every 24 seconds—thus, flash, interval, 6 seconds; flash, interval 18 seconds.
For one-half the period, or 12 seconds, the light will be totally eclipsed; for the other half a light of 800 candle-power will be visible, and this will be intensified by the flashes of 50,000 candle-power.
The illuminant will be petroleum vapour burned under an incandescent mantle.
A temporary fixed white light will be shown from about 15th June to about 1st July, 1918, while the new illuminating apparatus is being installed.
Approx. position: 48° 47′ 5″ N., 123° 2′ 44″ W.
NOVA SCOTIA.
SOUTH-EAST COAST.—MCNUTT ISLAND.—CAPE ROSEWAY LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.
About 1st July, 1918, the lower light at Cape Roseway Light-station will be discontinued, and the upper light will be replaced by a flashing white light showing 1 flash every 10 seconds.
The new light will be a third-order dioptric light of 100,000 candle-power exhibited 120 ft. above high water and visible 17 miles.
The illuminant will be petroleum vapour burned under an incandescent mantle.
The tower will be surmounted by a new polygonal iron lantern, painted red.
Approx. position: 42° 37′ 15″ N., 65° 15′ 45″ W.
JAPAN.
SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT.
Notice is hereby given that Naru Se Beacon light, W. entrance to Shimonoseki Strait, has been permanently withdrawn since the 27th of May, 1918.
GULF OF TOKYO.
Notice is hereby given that Ashika Jima Beacon light, Uraga Suido, Gulf of Tokyo, which was discontinued for reconstruction, has been shown as formally since the 5th of June, 1918.
SOUTH COAST OF HOKKAIDO.
Notice is hereby given that the fog-siren at Shiokubi Zaki Lighthouse, on Shiokubi Zaki, N. side of Tsugaru Strait, Hokkaido, will be temporarily discontinued for reconstruction on and after the 20th of June, 1918.

POVERTY BAY.—NICK’S HEAD.—ANCHORAGE BEACONS.

THE Gisborne Harbour Board have been notified by sea encroachment the front Nick’s Head anchorage beacon was washed away, and that the beacons now reinstated stand further inland.
The bearing and appearance of beacons remains as on previous notice, 260° (S. 65° W. magnetic) with one another, but the distance between the beacons is now 8 cables.
Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 3321 and 3343; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter iv, page 128; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1918, page 271 and 435.
