THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Master Attendant, Colombo; the Minister of State for Communications, Tokyo; the Hydrographic Office, London; and the Hydrographic Office, Washington, are published for general information.

ADMIRALTY PUBLICATIONS.

ALTERATION IN SYSTEM OF DATING CHARTS FOR ADMIRALTY NOTICES TO MARINERS.

FORMER notice hereby cancelled.

The existing system of dating Admiralty Charts for Admiralty Notices to Mariners is to be superseded by the following :—

When a chart is corrected for an Admiralty Notice to Mariners the year and number of the notice is to be inserted in red in the bottom left-hand corner of the chart, thus: 1918—2, 17, 46, &c.

Remarks.—Charts, the plates of which have received correction from information not published by Admiralty Notice to Mariners, and not considered of sufficient importance to justify cancelling all existing copies of the charts, will carry in the bottom left-hand corner in brackets the date of such correction, thus: 1918—2, 17, 46 (II. 21), 50, 62, &c.; 1919—(I. 26), 40, 72, &c.

ENGLAND.

WEST COAST.—BARNSTAPLE BAY.—HARTLAND POINT.—SHOAL NORTH-WESTWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of 9½ cables, 293° (N. 50° W. mag.), from Hartland Point Lighthouse. Lat. 51° 1½′ N., long. 4° 33′ W.

Description.—A shoal patch over which there is a depth of about 7 fathoms.

Note.—A note “Not examd. (1918)” is to be inserted on the charts against this shoal.

Variation.—17° W.

SOUTH COAST.—ST. ALBANS HEAD.—WRECK SOUTH-WESTWARD OF MARKED BY BUOY.

(a.) Wreck :

Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 6 miles south-westward of St. Albans Head. Lat. 50° 31′ N., long. 2° 11′ W.

Description.—A sunken wreck.

(b.) Buoy :

Position.—At a distance of about 1 cable southward from the wreck.

Description.—A green wreck-marking buoy.

DOVER CHANNEL.—HASTINGS.—AMENDED POSITIONS OF WRECKS SOUTHWARD OF.—LIGHT-BUOY AND BUOY ESTABLISHED.

1. Position of wrecks :

(a.) Position. — About 7 cables northward of position given in former notice. Lat. 50° 46′ 40″ N., long. 0° 38′ 15″ E.

Description.—Sunken wreck of a steamer with both masts showing above water.

(b.) Position. — About 7 cables northward of position given in former notice. Lat. 50° 46′ 35″ N., long. 0° 39′ 20″ E.

Description.—Sunken wreck of a steamer with mast showing at low water.

2. Light-buoy and buoy established :

(a.) Position.—At a distance of about half a cable south-eastward of the wreck given in (a) above.

Description.—A light-buoy painted green, exhibiting a group flashing green light showing two flashes every ten seconds.

(b.) Position.—At a distance of about half a cable south-eastward of the wreck given in (b) above.

Description.—A green wreck-marking buoy.

FRANCE.

NORTH-WEST COAST.—CHENAL DU FOUR.—OBSTRUCTION REPORTED.

Position (approximate).—At a distance of about half a mile northward of the northern end of Les Platresses. Lat. 48° 27′ N., long. 4° 51′ W.

Remarks.—The position on the charts is to be encircled by a danger line and marked “Obstruction (1918) (posn. approx.).”

MEDITERRANEAN.

EGYPT.—ALEXANDRIA HARBOUR APPROACH.—GREAT PASS, NORTH SHOAL.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.

Position.—Near the southern end of North Shoal on the northern side of Great Pass. Lat. 31° 10′ N., long. 29° 49′ E.

Description.—A fixed white light.

Remarks.—The beacon from which this light was formerly exhibited has been removed.

Caution.—See Admiralty Notice to Mariners, No. 883 of 1917, with reference to the extinction of lights in the vicinity of Alexandria.

MOROCCO, CEUTA BAY.—CEUTA LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Position.—Lat. 35° 53⅔′ N., long. 5° 16⅔′ W.

New Abridged Description.—Lt. gp. fl. (2) ev. 10 secs., 466 ft., vis. 16 m.

Details.—The fixed and flashing white light has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics :—

Character.—A group flashing white light showing two flashes every ten seconds—thus, flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 1·3 secs.; flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 8 secs.

Elevation.—466 feet.

Visibility.—16 miles.

Remarks.—The existing light structure is being removed and a new structure erected.

INDIA.

WEST COAST.—BOMBAY APPROACH.—AMENDED POSITION OF WRECK.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.

(a.) Wreck :

Position.—In the southern approach to Bombay, at a distance of about 2¼ miles north-eastward of position shown on charts. Lat. 18° 7′ 30″ N., long. 72° 42′ E.

Description.—Sunken wreck of a steamer.

(b.) Buoy :

Position.—On western side of wreck.

Description.—A green wreck-marking buoy.

CEYLON.

WEST COAST.

With reference to my Notices to Mariners dated 12th March, 1914, and 12th April, 1918, should the time-ball fail at 1 p.m., local zone mean time (7 h. 30 m. Greenwich mean time), from and after 20th June, 1918, the signal will be repeated at 2 p.m., local zone mean time (8 h. 30 m. Greenwich mean time).

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—GULF OF PECHILI.—TAKU APPROACH.—ALTERATIONS IN AIDS TO NAVIGATION.

1. Alteration in position of Taku light-vessel :

New Position.—At a distance of 6 cables, 175° (S. 1° E. mag.), from former charted position, and 8·3 miles, 112° (S. 64° E. mag.), from the centre of North Fort Cavalier. Lat. 38° 56′ N., long. 117° 53¼′ E.

Description.—A light-vessel exhibiting a revolving white light, as described in the Admiralty List of Lights.

2. Alteration in position of Entrance light-buoy :

New Position.—At a distance of 3 cables, 212° (S. 36° W. mag.), from former charted position, and 6·1 miles, 115° (S. 61° E. mag.), from the centre of North Fort Cavalier.

Description.—A light-buoy exhibiting an occulting white light.

3. Alteration in position of Taku bar light-boat :

New Position.—At a distance of one cable, 176° (south mag.), from former charted position, and about half a cable southward of the inner leading-line.

Description.—A light-boat exhibiting a fixed red light.

4. Taku bar outer leading-marks discontinued :

Details.—The two light beacons, hitherto in use as the outer leading-marks, have been discontinued.

Remarks.—The Taku light-vessel and Entrance light-buoy in their new positions are in line with the inner leading-marks.

Variation.—4° W.

AUSTRALIA.

QUEENSLAND, MORETON BAY.—VENUS BANKS.—EXTENSION TO SOUTH-WESTWARD.

Position.—Venus banks, south-western end, lat. 27° 3¼′ S., long. 153° 22¼′ E.
