  2. In Territorial units where equipment is not in constant use add 50 per cent. on to the period of duration laid down.

Should it appear that articles are becoming unserviceable before they have been in use the prescribed periods, inquiry should be made into the cause thereof. In the absence of sufficient reason to explain the premature unserviceability of stores, the troops are liable to be charged under para. 89.

  1. On active service the periods of duration are liable to vary according to the nature of the service and the climate, but the prescribed periods will be adhered to as far as possible.

SECTION XVI.—DUTIES OF ARMOURERS.

  1. Armourers will perform the following duties :—
(a.) Execute all repairs required to the arms (including lances, pistols, swords, and scabbards) in possession of their respective units, and perform any other work within their capabilities.
(b.) Inspect annually all rifles, pistols, sword-bayonets, and scabbards in use, and all bicycles on charge.

Examine and clean all arms and bicycles issued from store before they are placed in the hands of the troops, removing any excess of lubricant from the barrels and actions of the arms.

(c.) Within working-hours, the services of armourers will be generally available for the performance of any of the above duties for other units or departments without extra remuneration.
(d.) Execute repairs necessitated by carelessness or wilful damage, without addition to pay.

  1. Armourers will, in addition to the duties laid down in para. 250, execute any trifling repairs, and also such other work within their capabilities as, under special authority, they may be called upon to perform.
