1917, on the proposal of the Huntly Town Board to borrow the sum of £575 for the providing of a sum sufficient to complete payment for the electric light and power plant already laid down, and which has cost £575 more than was anticipated, the number of votes recorded for the proposal was 6, and the number of votes recorded against the proposal was 1.
I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.

Notice of Result of Poll on Proposal to raise a Loan.
PURSUANT to section 12 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913, I hereby give notice that at a poll of the ratepayers of the County of Mangonui taken on the 12th day of May, 1917, on the proposal of the Mangonui County Council to borrow the sum of £2,000 for repairing roads, culverts, and bridges destroyed through flood damage through the county, the number of votes recorded for the proposal was 237, and the number of votes recorded against the proposal was 19.
I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.

In pursuance of the By-laws Act, 1910, I hereby confirm the above-written by-laws, and declare that the same came into force on the 15th day of December, 1916.

Engine-driver Disqualified.
WHEREAS it is provided by section 50 of the Inspection of Machinery Act, 1908, that where it appears to the Board of Examiners, constituted under section 48 of the said Act, that the holder of a certificate under the said Act is guilty of any offence or misconduct which would render him unfit to be trusted to efficiently perform his duties as such holder, the Board may call upon him to show cause why he should not be disqualified, and if he fails to show cause the Board may report the matter to the Minister, who, by notice in the Gazette, may disqualify him for such period as he thinks fit, and during the period of disqualification he shall be deemed not to be the holder of such certificate:
And whereas a report has been received from the Board of Examiners, constituted as hereinbefore stated, that the misconduct of FREDERICK FINLAY is such as to render him unfit to be trusted to efficiently perform his duties as a locomotive and traction engine driver:
Now, therefore, I, George Warren Russell, Minister in Charge of the Marine and Inspection of Machinery Department, in pursuance of the powers conferred upon me by section 50 of the Inspection of Machinery Act, 1908, do hereby disqualify the said FREDERICK FINLAY from holding locomotive and traction engine driver’s certificate of competency No. 1045, issued to him by the said Board on the 23rd February, 1904, and authorizing him to act as driver of locomotive and traction engines, such disqualification to continue for life; and during the period of disqualification he shall be deemed not to be the holder of the said certificate No. 1045.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Furniture Shops in the Borough of New Plymouth, under the Shops and Offices Act.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the furniture shops in the Borough of New Plymouth, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Monday 6 p.m., Tuesday 6 p.m., Wednesday 6 p.m., Friday 6 p.m., Saturday 9 p.m., during the months of November, January, February, March, and April, and at 5.30 p.m. in the evening of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and at 9 p.m. on Saturday, during the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October. The hour of closing during the month of December shall be optional; provided that any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday shall be entitled to keep his shop open until 6 p.m. on the Thursday night and until 9 p.m. on the Friday night during the months of November, January, February, March, and April, and until 5.30 p.m. on Thursday night and until 9 p.m. on the Friday night during the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October; provided further that when any day is generally observed as a holiday in the borough, any occupier whose shop is usually closed on some other day may remain open on the latter day until the hour fixed by this notice for the day on which the holiday is observed, provided that his shop is closed not later than 1 p.m. on the holiday:
And whereas the New Plymouth Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the furniture shops within the Borough of New Plymouth:
Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 18th day of June, 1917, all furniture shops in the Borough of New Plymouth shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., during the months of November, January, February, March, and April, and on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 5.30 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9 p.m., during the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October, with the following exceptions—(1) In the case of a shop that is closed for the weekly half-holiday on Saturdays, the closing-hour on Thursdays shall be 6 p.m., and on Fridays shall be 9 p.m., during the months of November, January, February, March, and April, and on Thursdays shall be 5.30 p.m., and on Fridays shall be 9 p.m., during the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October. (2.) When any day is generally observed as a holiday in the borough, any occupier whose shop is usually closed on some other day may remain open on the latter day until the hour fixed by this notice for the day on which the holiday is observed, provided that his shop is closed not later than 1 p.m. on the holiday.
Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, nothing in this notice shall permit any such shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday.
The notice gazetted on the 27th day of May, 1915, is hereby cancelled.

NOTICE.—ARTHUR POLLOCK, Esquire, of No. 6 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, in the County of London, England, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature, England, has this day been appointed by His Honour the Chief Justice a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in England, under the 47th section of the Judicature Act, 1908, for the purpose of administering and taking all such oaths, affidavits, and affirmations as in the said section mentioned.
