APPLICATIONS will be received by the undersigned up till noon on the 12th March, 1917, for the position of
Orchard Overseer, Arataki Horticultural Station, Havelock North.

Applications (to be made on P.S.C. Form 17A, obtainable at principal post-offices) must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace a statement of education and experience, particulars of age, &c.

Applicants must be not more than forty years of age.

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of commercial orcharding, including fruit-tree pruning, budding, grafting, and cultivation, and a general knowledge of orchard diseases and their control.
The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1912.
The position will be graded in the General Division. Salary, £180 per annum; maximum, £200.

Special Books in Languages and Literature for the Teachers' Class C Certificate Examination, 1918 and 1919.

IN pursuance of regulations under the Education Act, 1914, notice is hereby given that at the Teachers' Class C Certificate Examination of January, 1918, and January, 1919, respectively, the special books of which a knowledge will be required will be as follows:
(a.) January, 1918.
ENGLISH.—Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet"; Macaulay, "Essay on Milton"; Milton, "Samson Agonistes," "L'Allegro," "Il Penseroso," "Lycidas." In addition, a knowledge of the period of literature 1625–1688 will be required. In the study of the literature special attention must be paid to Milton, Dryden, Herrick, Butler, Taylor, Bunyan, and Browne; but the other authors of the period are not to be neglected. The literary movements and their leaders, the current types and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as the influence of the ancient classics and of the leading Continental literatures on the English literature of the period must also be examined.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—HARBOUR LIGHTS AND FOG-SIGNAL.

Wellington, N.Z., 26th February, 1917.
THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that the post holding the distinguishing-lights and fog-signal on the northern end of the Western Tide Deflector was washed away during a heavy easterly gale.
A boat has been moored approximately 40 ft. N.N.E. magnetic from the northern end of the Tide Deflector, and a fixed white light is shown from the boat at night until such time as the distinguishing-lights are re-erected.
