Notice to Mariners.—No. 10 of 1917.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Harbours Board Offices, Adelaide; the Marine Department, Brisbane; the Hydrographic Office, Washington; and the Acting Governor of Balboa Heights are published for general information.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
GULF OF ST. VINCENT.—PORT ADELAIDE.—SEMAPHORE SIGNAL-STATION.—TIME-BALL.
Masters of vessels and others are hereby informed that on and after the 1st January and until the 25th March, 1917, the time-ball at the semaphore will be dropped at 1 p.m. (local clock-time), or one hour earlier than formerly, and will correspond with 14 hours 30 minutes, Greenwich mean time, instead of 15 hours 30 minutes, as prior to the alteration of time resulting from the passing of the Daylight Saving Act, and will have effect during the periods between the last Sunday in September and the last Sunday in March in each year until further notified.
Approximate position: Lat. 34° 50½′ S., long. 138° 29′ E. This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 2389, 1750, and 1752.
GULF OF ST. VINCENT.—PORT ADELAIDE RIVER.
Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that on and after the 1st December, 1916, outward-bound leading beacons for Nos. 13, 12, and 11 leads will be brought into use.
These beacons are similar in construction to the existing inward-bound leads, and when the two beacons of each lead are in line they indicate the centre of the channel. By night the front beacon will show a red light, about 18 ft. above H.W.S.T., and the back beacon a white light, about 35 ft. above H.W.S.T.
The approximate position of the respective leads is lat. 34° 49′, 34° 48¾′, and 34° 47¾′, long. 138° 30¾′.
This affects Admiralty Charts Nos. 1750 and 1752, also Survey of River dated 1909.
QUEENSLAND.
EAST COAST OF AUSTRALIA.—MORETON BAY.—ESTABLISHMENT OF SMALL LIGHT FOR CLEARING EAST KNOLL.
Notice is hereby given that, on and after the 15th February, 1917, a small white light will be exhibited from a position close to the high-water line of Moreton Island, eight and a half cables south from the boat-shed at Old Pilot-station.
The light will be screened between the bearings of N. 15° E. and east.
A vessel will be clear to the eastward of East Knoll buoy when the light is visible to the northward of N. 15° E.
The light in line with the Howard Range leading-light S. 37° E. will also mark a course midway between Yule Bank buoy and Comboyuro Point.
Mariners are cautioned that this light may not be visible in thick or rainy weather.
The small light near the boat-shed at the Old Pilot-station will be discontinued.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
SOCIETY ISLANDS.—TAHAA ISLAND.—PAIPAI PASS.—RANGEMARKS ESTABLISHED.
Two white day-marks have been established on the northern side of Hurepiti Bay which in line lead through Paipai Pass. These day-marks have been poorly placed and should not be depended upon.

BEACONS ERECTED.
The coral beacon eastward of Great Central Bank has been replaced by an iron mast with triangular top-mark, the whole painted red.
An iron beacon with cylindrical top-mark, the whole painted white, has been erected on the north-eastern extremity of Great Central Bank.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
OAHU.—HONOLULU HARBOUR.—HONOLULU FORT STREET LIGHT TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED.
Information has been received that on 24th November, 1916, Honolulu Fort Street light would be temporarily discontinued pending the reconstruction of Pier 10.

OREGON.
COLUMBIA RIVER APPROACH.—SOUTH CHANNEL BELL-BUOY TO BE DISCONTINUED.
About 31st December, 1916, South Channel bell-buoy SC will be discontinued.

CANARY ISLANDS.
GRAN CANARIA.—ISLETA POINT LIGHT.—VISIBILITY TO BE INCREASED.
A new petroleum-vapour light will be installed in the lighthouse at Isleta Point. When this is completed the red flash will be visible 22 miles and the white light 20 miles.
Approx. position: Lat. 28° 10′ 55″ N., long. 15° 25′ 6″ W.

AFRICA.
EAST COAST.—DELAGOA BAY.—LIGHTS AND LIGHT-BUOYS ESTABLISHED.—BUOY CHANGED.
A lighted range has been established for Polana Channel. The front light is fixed red and the rear fixed white. The lights are visible 10 miles.
A light-buoy exhibiting a fixed red light has been moored in 5¾ fathoms in Cockburn Channel. This buoy in range with Cape Inhaca light leads through the best water.
The buoy on Fawn Shoal has been withdrawn and a red buoy with a square top-mark has been established in 7¾ fathoms.
The pilots cruising-ground is about 3 miles 148° from Inhaca light.

BAY OF BENGAL.
RANGOON RIVER ENTRANCE.—CHINA BAKIR LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—TEMPORARY LIGHT-VESSEL.
On 7th December, 1916, and without further notice, China Bakir light will be changed to fixed and flashing every 5 seconds, duration of flash 0·4 second, visible over an arc of 206° from 220° to 66°. The fixed light will have a luminous power of 10,000 candles and the flash 132,000 candles.
During the work of installation a light-vessel painted red, with CHINA BAKIR in white on the side, exhibiting a flashing white light every 40 seconds, visible 12 miles, is temporarily moored 2 miles 90° from the lighthouse.
