Applications for Funerals.
(e.) Applications for funerals at the expense of the State must be made to the nearest Defence Office as early as possible, and should be accompanied by the certificate referred to in paragraph 556 (b) of these regulations.
Detailed Provisions.
(f.) With respect to funerals referred to in paragraphs 556 (a), (b), and (c) of these regulations, the following provisions shall apply :-
(i.) A suitable coffin will be provided.
(ii.) A hearse, if conveniently available, will be provided where a gun-carriage is not used.
(iii.) One mourners’ coach only will be provided.
(iv.) The body will be buried at such cemetery as the Commandant may appoint, or, by his permission, at another cemetery if desired by the next-of-kin; but the Commandant will not permit the bodies of soldiers suffering from infectious diseases to be buried in cemeteries which are not approved by the Director-General of Medical Services.
(v.) In cases where the Commandant has authorized the transport of the body to a distance for burial, all transport expenses will be paid by the Defence Department.
(vi.) All arrangements will be made by the officers of the Defence Department, and no liability shall be incurred by the Defence Department by reason of any instructions given by the relatives or friends of the deceased.
(vii.) No advertising charges or clergyman’s fees will be paid by the Defence Department.
(viii.) All vouchers shall be certified by the authorized officer who ordered the service to be performed.
(ix.) In cases where local authorities have set aside plots in cemeteries for soldiers’ burial, these are to be used, unless some other suitable plot is provided by the next-of-kin. Burial-plots purchased by the Government will not become the property of the next-of-kin of the deceased.
