the following days—Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, and any other day which, pursuant to a Proclamation by the Governor-General or declaration by the Government, or on the request of the Mayor or Chairman of the local authority, is generally observed as a public holiday or half-holiday, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; and (b) the evening of the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and the evening of the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Watchmakers’, Jewellers’, Goldsmiths’, and Silversmiths’ Shops in the City of Wellington, under the Shops and Offices Act.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the watchmakers’, jewellers’, goldsmiths’, and silversmiths’ shops in the City of Wellington, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: (1) On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 10 p.m.; (2) when any day is generally observed as a holiday in the district any shop that is closed at not later than 1 o’clock on that day and that is usually closed for the statutory half-holiday on another day of the week may remain open on the latter day until the hour fixed by this notice for the day on which the holiday is observed; (3) except that the closing-hour for Thursday before Good Friday shall be 10 p.m.; (4) except also that in December up till the 14th the closing-hours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays shall be 9 p.m., and thereafter on all nights 11 p.m.:
And whereas the Wellington City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the watchmakers’, jewellers’, goldsmiths’, and silversmiths’ shops within the City of Wellington:
Now, therefore, I, William Ferguson Massey, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 5th day of November, 1917, all watchmakers’, jewellers’, goldsmiths’, and silversmiths’ shops in the City of Wellington shall be closed as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 10 p.m., with the following exceptions: (a) The working-day immediately preceding Good Friday, when the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m.; (b) the period from the 1st day of December to the 14th day of December, both days inclusive, when the closing-hour on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays shall be 9 p.m., and on Fridays 10 p.m.; (c) the period from the 15th day of December to the 31st day of December, both days inclusive, when the closing-hour on every working-day (other than the statutory closing-day) shall be 11 p.m.; (d) when any day is generally observed as a holiday in the City of Wellington, any shop that is closed at not later than 1 o’clock on that day, and that is usually closed for the statutory half-holiday on another day of the week, may remain open on the latter day until the hour fixed by this notice for the day on which the holiday is observed.
The notices gazetted on the 4th day of April, 1907, and the 13th day of June, 1907, are hereby cancelled.

Notifying Land in the Canterbury Land District subject to the Land for Settlements Act, 1908.

PURSUANT to the provisions of the Land for Settlements Act, 1908, and its amendments, I hereby notify that the undermentioned Crown land, being the land known as the Seafield Settlement, which has been acquired under the said Acts, is subject to the said Acts as from 29th March, 1917.

ALL that area in the Canterbury Land District, containing by admeasurement 1,327 acres 1 rood, more or less, situate in Blocks XV, XVI, Ashburton Survey District, and III and IV, Wakanui Survey District, comprising Rural Sections 25219, 25228, 26571, 26608, 26623, 28253, and part of Rural Section 25234, being the whole of the land in certificates of title, Vol. 31, folio 119, Vol. 31, folio 180, Vol. 53, folio 90,

Estimated Areas under Wheat and Oats, Season 1917–18.

FOLLOWING the procedure adopted last year cards have again been sent out by post to grain-growers in the Dominion asking them to state the areas they had sown or proposed to sow in wheat and oats for the present season. The cards returned have been tabulated, and on the results obtained an estimate has been based of the total areas sown or to be sown.
The estimates are subjoined.
