  1. On obtaining the approval of the Minister of Marine any acclimatization society may issue—
    (1.) Trout licenses for one specified river only for the season for 10s. Such license shall be for the period from 1st October to 14th January in the following year for any salmon river, but may be for the whole season for any river not proclaimed to be a salmon river.
    (2.) A half-season’s license for the period from 1st October to 14th January of the following year for 12s. 6d. in salmon rivers, and for the same or any other period in non-salmon rivers.

  2. Licenses to fish for salmon shall be issued by the Postmasters at Christchurch, Dunedin, Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru, Temuka, Winchester, and Ashburton, or at such other place or places as may from time to time be notified by the Marine Department. Every such license shall be in the form set forth in the Schedule hereto.

  3. Section 9 of the General Regulations gazetted the 23rd day of August, 1907, is hereby amended by inserting, at the beginning of the clause, the words “Except in rivers proclaimed salmon rivers”; and sections 7, 10, and 12 shall be amended by having the words “salmon or” included before the word “trout” in each case; and section 15 of the said general regulations is hereby amended by adding the words “or as is provided for in section 12 of these regulations.”

  4. No person shall take or catch more than six salmon in any one day.

  5. During the salmon spawning season—that is to say, from the 15th day of April to the 31st day of July in any year—no nets of any kind shall be used inside the mouth of any of the rivers or streams or their tributaries hereinafter stated, or inside the mouth of any river which is being stocked with quinnat salmon by the Marine Department, of which notice shall have been given in the New Zealand Gazette, or in any river where the use of the same is prohibited; provided that this prohibition shall not apply to the Marine Department, or to any acclimatization society taking trout for the purpose of pisciculture. The rivers and their tributaries in which it shall be illegal to use nets during the period stated shall be the Molyneaux, Taieri, Kakanui, Waitaki, Rangitata, Rakaia, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Waiau (North Canterbury), Wairau, and Hokitika, and such other river or rivers as the Marine Department have notified in the New Zealand Gazette. The mouth of any of these rivers shall extend to and include all that part of the said rivers as defined by section 14 of the general regulations gazetted on the 23rd day of August, 1907.

  6. Every licensed salmon angler shall keep a record of the number and weight of salmon caught by him, and shall furnish a monthly return during the fishing season, upon forms to be provided, to the Secretary, Marine Department, Wellington. Envelopes and postage will be provided by the Department.

  7. During the salmon angling season—that is to say, from the 15th January to the 15th April—salmon caught at sea by hook and line, by fishermen who are the owners of a licensed fishing-boat, may be sold.

  8. The penalty for breaches of any of these regulations shall not be less than £2 or more than £50, provided that in the case of any person found guilty of taking salmon or trout illegally during their spawning season, or of any person who uses dynamite or other explosive substance for the purpose of catching or killing salmon or trout the minimum penalty shall not be less than £10.

  9. The Marine Department may, under conditions to be provided, fish for salmon off the mouth of any salmon river on behalf of the Department. All trout caught shall be returned to the sea.

SCHEDULE.

LICENSE TO FISH FOR QUINNAT SALMON.

The holder of this license, being already the holder of a trout license, and having this day paid the sum of __, is hereby authorized to fish for quinnat salmon in the Waitaki and Rangitata Rivers from the __ day of __, 191, to the __ day of __, 191____, subject to general and amended regulations in force for the time being.
