DERELICT IN PACIFIC OCEAN.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 22nd August, 1917.
NOTICE is hereby given that the following reports have been received of derelicts in the Pacific Ocean:—
Position.—On 16th July, 1917, in lat. 5° 9′ S. and long. 168° 24½′ E. On 8th August, 1917, in lat. 24° 36′ S. and long. 176° 33′ E.
Description.—A large two-masted schooner which has been burnt out. Two sets of chain-plates were showing above the hull; the derelict was down by the head apparently to her anchors, and was about one-third submerged. The stern head showed at times, and was painted white; the rest of the hull was painted with red haematite, and appeared to be quite fresh. There was no sign of marine growth; the rudder was missing. The hull was estimated to be 150 ft. long by about 30 ft. abeam. The derelict was drifting to the E.N.E. before a moderate wind and sea.
Note.—Probably both reports were of same derelict, which had drifted to eastward 445 miles in twenty-two days at rate of twenty miles a day.

Secretary.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
The Marakeke Settlement, formerly part of the Awanui Estate, is situated on the southern edge of the Ruataniwha Plains, about three to six miles from Takapau. The portion north of the Awanui Stream (1,950 acres) is level country, watered by the Porangahau and Maharaeke Streams, on north and east. The internal portion is not watered, but water could probably be got by sinking shallow wells.
The southern portion is more or less undulating, watered by Maharaeke Stream. In places there are indications of a hard pan under the top soil. Generally speaking the land is in native grasses, and requires renewing.
The elevation ranges from 600 ft. to 750 ft. above sea-level. The land is well adapted for mixed farming.
SPECIAL CONDITION.
The main fence along the Maharaeke Stream has been used as a boundary by former owners of the settlement and the lessees affected on the Hatuma Settlement under mutual arrangements, and the selectors of the allotments in Marakeke Settlement traversed by this fence will require to make their
