Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve), when the closing-hour shall be 9.30 p.m. ; (b) Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m. ; (c) the Thursday and Saturday preceding and the Thursday following Easter Monday in each year, when the closing-hour shall be 9.30 p.m. ; (d) the working-day immediately preceding and the working-days on which any race meeting or trotting meeting is held in the Borough of Wanganui under the auspices of the Wanganui Jockey Club and of the Wanganui Trotting Club respectively, when the closing - hour shall be 9.30 p.m. ; (e) any working-day on which the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show is held, and the working-day immediately preceding any such day, when the closing-hour shall be 9.30 p.m.

Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, nothing in this notice shall permit any such shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday.

The notice gazetted on the 28th day of July, 1910, is hereby varied accordingly,

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Booksellers’, Stationers’, and Fancy-goods Shops in the Borough of New Plymouth, under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the (a) booksellers’, (b) stationers’, and (c) fancy-goods shops in the Borough of New Plymouth, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6.15 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10.15 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the period of six working-days immediately prior to 24th December in each year, when the closing-hour shall be optional ; (2) any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday shall be entitled to keep his or her shop open on the Thursday till 6.15 p.m. and Friday till 10.15 p.m. ; (3) should any day other than Thursday be observed as a holiday the closing-hour for Thursday shall be 6.15 p.m. ; (4) should any Saturday be generally observed as a holiday the closing-hour on the previous Friday shall be 10.15 p.m. ; (5) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday the closing-hour for the preceding Thursday shall be 10.15 p.m. : And whereas the New Plymouth Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the (a) booksellers’, (b) stationers’, and (c) fancy-goods shops within the Borough of New Plymouth :

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting for the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 30th day of July, 1917, all booksellers’ shops, stationers’ shops, and fancy-goods shops in the Borough of New Plymouth shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6.15 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10.15 p.m., with the following exceptions — (1) the six working-days immediately preceding the 24th December of each year, when the closing-hour shall be optional ; (2) any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday may keep his shop open on Thursdays until 6.15 p.m., and on Fridays until 10.15 p.m. ; (3) should any day other than Thursday be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth the closing-hour for Thursday shall be 6.15 p.m. ; (4) should any Saturday be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth the closing-hour on the preceding Friday shall be 10.15 p.m. ; (5) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday in the Borough of New Plymouth the closing-hour on the preceding Thursday shall be 10.15 p.m.

Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, nothing in this notice shall permit any such shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday.

Notice of Intention to take Land in Block IX, Whitianga Survey District, for Road Purposes.


NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the provisions of the Public Works Act, 1908, to execute a certain public work—to wit, the construction of a road in Block IX, Whitianga Survey District; and for the purposes of such public work the land described in the Schedule hereto is required to be taken. And notice is hereby further given that the plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the post-office at Whenuakite, and is there open for inspection; and that all persons affected by the execution of the said public work or by the taking of the said land should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the execution of the said public work or to the taking of such land, set forth the same in writing, and send such writing, within forty days from the first publication of this notice, to the Minister of Public Works at Wellington.
