THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Marine Department, Brisbane, and the Presidency Port Office, Madras, are published for general information.

QUEENSLAND.

GREAT SANDY STRAIT.—DREDGED CUTTING AT STEWART ISLAND FLATS.

NOTICE is hereby given that a cutting, with a width of 200 ft. and low-water depth of 12 ft., has been dredged through the flats abreast the northern end of Stewart Island.

Directions.—After rounding the southern end of Stewart Island, bring the two white triangular beacons on the sandbank north of Stewart Island in line ahead as before bearing N. 23° W. (These beacons have been moved 100 ft. westerly without alteration of the bearing.) Continue with these in line until two white triangular beacons are visible on the north-west extreme of Stewart Island, when haul to the westward and bring them in line astern bearing about S. 70° E., and pass a red beacon on the starboard hand at a distance of about 110 ft., and then proceed as before.

INDIA.

EAST COAST.—BAY OF BENGAL.—MADRAS HARBOUR.—DESTRUCTION OF NORTH ARM OCCULTING LIGHT.—LIGHT WASHED AWAY DURING CYCLONE OF 22ND NOV., 1916.

Position.—Latitude 13° 6′ N., longitude 80° 18′ E.

Description.—Red and white IV order alternating occulting light every 15 seconds.

Former Notice.—No. 6 of 1912, dated 13th February, 1912, Madras Notice.

Charts affected.—Madras to Ramiapatam, 575; Madras to Point Calimere, 71; Cape Comorin to Cocanada, 828; Bay of Bengal to Cocanada, 70.

Publications.—Bay of Bengal Pilot; List of Lighthouses and Light-vessels in British India, 30th June, 1915.

Remarks.—A temporary fixed red light will be exhibited on or about the 12th December, 1916, from a position 60 yards south of the old light and 30 ft. above high water.


Certain Species of Birds indigenous to New Zealand not to be deemed protected.

At the Government House at Wellington, this twenty-third day of January, 1917.

THE HONOURABLE JAMES ALLEN PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in him by the Animals Protection Act, 1908, as amended by the Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1910, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby suspend the operation of section ten of the said Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1910, for the period ending on the thirty-first day of December, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, with respect to the species of birds indigenous to New Zealand mentioned in the Schedule hereto.


SCHEDULE.

Hawks of all species.
Kea, or mountain parrot.
Shags of the following species: Black shag (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris); white-throated shag (Phalacrocorax brevirostris); sea-shag (Phalacrocorax novaehollandiae, Phalacrocorax carbo).

Notice of Vesting of Land in the Public Trustee under the Public Trust Office Act, 1908, Part II, Unclaimed Lands

WHEREAS the Public Trustee has, for the purpose of Part II of the Public Trust Office Act, 1908, and its amendments (relating to unclaimed lands), made due inquiries with respect to the land described in the Schedule hereunder, and the whereabouts of the owner thereof, and has, in respect of the said land, given the notices prescribed by section 66 of the said Act, and has in all respects complied with the provisions of that Act pertinent hereto: And whereas the Public Trustee has not thereby ascertained the whereabouts of the owner or of any agent of such owner in New Zealand, nor has such owner established his title to the said land, as required by the said Act:

Now, I, the undersigned, the Public Trustee, hereby give notice that the said land is, under and by virtue of the said Act, vested in the Public Trustee as aforesaid, as from the date of the publication hereof, and will be administered under the Public Trust Office Act, 1908, and its amendments; the value of the land for the purposes of section 67 (d) of the said Act being less than £100.

NOTICE is hereby given that the leases and licenses of the undermentioned lands having been forfeited by the resolution of the Wellington Land Board, the said lands have thereby reverted to the Crown under the provisions of the Land Act, 1908.
