the Borough of Wanganui, except such specified shop, shall be closed as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 9.30 p.m.

Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, and to subsection (3) of section 18 of the said Act, nothing in this notice shall permit any such shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday, except for the sale of medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently required; provided that such shops may, pursuant to subsection (4) of section 18 of the said Act, reopen on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday between 7 and 8.45 p.m. only for the sale of medicines and surgical appliances.

The notice gazetted on the 6th day of July, 1916, is hereby cancelled.

NOTE.—Pursuant to section 3 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1915, it will not be lawful for any chemist whose shop is situated within two miles of the shop referred to, by the nearest route as determined by the Inspector, to supply any goods after the hours fixed by this notice.


Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Pork-butchers’ Shops in the City of Wellington, under the Shops and Offices Act.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the pork-butchers’ shops within the City of Wellington, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 8 p.m., on Fridays at 9 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10 p.m., with the following exceptions: (a) the evening immediately preceding the following days—the day of the Butchers’ Picnic, Good Friday, Labour Day, and the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, when the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m.; (b) Christmas Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 12 p.m.; (c) New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.; and (d) during the week immediately preceding Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.:

And whereas the Wellington City Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the pork-butchers’ shops within the City of Wellington:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 25th day of June, 1917, all pork-butchers’ shops in the City of Wellington shall be closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 8 p.m., on Fridays at 9 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10 p.m., with the following exceptions: (a) the working evening immediately preceding the following days—the day of the Butchers’ Picnic, Good Friday, Labour Day, and the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, when the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m.; (b) Christmas Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 12 p.m.; (c) New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.; (d) the six working-days, other than Saturday, immediately preceding Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hours shall be 9 p.m.

Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, nothing in this notice shall permit any shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday.

The notice gazetted on the 11th day of June, 1908, is hereby cancelled.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops within the Borough of Te Kuiti, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., on Thursdays at 8 p.m., on Saturdays at 9.30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. on days which are generally observed as public holidays by shopkeepers in the borough:

And whereas the Te Kuiti Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops within the Borough of Te Kuiti:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 25th day of June, 1917, all chemists’ shops within the Borough of Te Kuiti shall be closed at 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at 9.30 p.m. on Saturdays, with the exception of the evening of any day that is generally observed as a holiday in the borough, when the closing-hour for any chemist’s shop that has been closed during the day and has reopened in the evening shall be 8 p.m.

Pursuant to subsection (4) of the said section, and to subsection (c) of section 18 of the said Act, nothing in this notice shall permit any such shop to remain open after the hour of 1 p.m. on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday, except for the sale of medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently required; provided that such shops may, pursuant to subsection (d) of section 18 of the said Act, reopen on the day observed as the weekly half-holiday at 7 p.m. only for the sale of medicines and surgical appliances, and in such case the closing-hour shall be 8 p.m.

Export of Casings to the United States.


Customs Department,
Wellington, 18th June, 1917.

IT is hereby notified for public information that the Minister of Customs has granted general permission for the export of casings of all kinds to the United States of America.

No application or permit will in future be required. Declaration of ultimate destination must, however, be produced to the Collector of Customs before shipment of the casings.

It should be understood that this general permit may at any time be withdrawn.

Commissioner of Supreme Court appointed.


I HEREBY give notice that JAMES DUNLOP, of Glasgow, in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, Solicitor, has been this day appointed by the Honourable William Alexander Sim, a Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, to be and act as a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in Scotland aforesaid, under the 47th section of the Judicature Act, 1908, for the purpose of administering and taking all such oaths, affidavits, and affirmations as are in the said section mentioned.
