Authorizing the Laying-off of Frances, Leslie, and Joseph
Streets, in the Town of Taieri Mouth, of a Width of not
less than 66 ft.

IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon
me by section 15 of the Land Act, 1908, I hereby
authorize the laying-off of Frances, Leslie, and Joseph
Streets, in the Town of Taieri Mouth, Otago Land District,
of a width of not less than 66 ft. instead of 99 ft.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force
upon the New Zealand Government Railways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me
under the Government Railways Act, 1908, and its
amendments, I, William Herbert Herries, Minister of Rail-
ways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale
of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand
Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to
come into force on and after the 29th day of May, 1916.

Barley booked through from Seddon, Riverlands, and
intermediate stations to Wellington and shipped from Picton

steamer, including wharfage and unloading at Picton.

Consignors or consignees to make their own arrangements
for shipping.

Goods not otherwise provided for will be charged according
to ship's bill of lading, or by weight or measurement, at the
option of the Railway Department.

Scheme for the Control of the Christchurch High Schools.

Education Department,
Wellington, 11th May, 1916.
IN accordance with the provisions of the Education Act,
1914 (hereinafter called "the Education Act"), and
with the powers thereunder, I, Josiah Alfred Hanan,
Minister of Education, do hereby cancel the scheme of control
for the Christchurch Boys' and Girls' High Schools published
in the New Zealand Gazette of the 17th February last, and
hereby approve of the following scheme for the said schools
(hereinafter called "the schools"), which are established
under the provisions of the Christchurch Boys' and Girls'
High School Act, 1878.

  1. The schools shall be controlled by the Board of
    Governors of Canterbury College (hereinafter referred to as
    "the Board"), constituted by the Canterbury College and
    Canterbury Agricultural College Act, 1896.

  2. (1.) The schools shall provide a course of general
    secondary education and one or more vocational courses.

(2.) The program of each pupil shall be determined by
the principal of the school after consultation with the
parents or guardian of the pupil; but no pupil shall be
compelled to take Latin, or to take more than one language
besides English.

(3.) The fees to be charged to those who are not holders
of scholarships or free places shall be as follows:—
For the Boys' School: £10 10s. per annum for boys
under the age of twelve years, and £13 10s. per annum
for boys who have reached that age; provided that
if two or more brothers who pay fees attend, a re-
duction of 10s. per term shall be allowed for each
brother after the first; and provided further that
the fees shall be subject to a rebate of £1 on each
proportional one-third part of such fees on payment
within fourteen days from the commencement of
each term.
For the Girls' School: £12 12s. per annum for girls
in the preparatory class, £12 12s. per annum for
girls under the age of twelve years, and £15 15s.
per annum for girls who have reached that age and
are not in the preparatory class; provided that if
two or more sisters who pay fees attend, a reduction
of £1 1s. per term shall be allowed for each sister
after the first; and provided further that the fees
shall be subject to a rebate of £1 1s. on each propor-
tional one-third part of such fees on payment within
fourteen days from the commencement of each term.

(4.) The school year shall consist of three terms of about
thirteen weeks each.

(5.) The principal shall cause the school to be examined
during each term; provided that it shall not be necessary
for the school to be so examined in any term in which it is
examined by some person appointed by the Minister or the
Board, and provided further that it shall not be necessary
to include in such examination classes the majority of whose
members are sitting for public examinations during the term.

  1. Subject to the general direction and control of the
    Board, the principal shall have the following powers with
    respect to the Boys' School and the lady principal shall have
    similar powers with respect to the Girls' School :—
    (1.) He shall have control of the school buildings and
    premises, and of the apparatus and furniture thereof.
    (2.) He shall have the power to recommend the appoint-
    ment or dismissal of assistant teachers or of other officers of
    the school, and to allot their several duties; and no assistant
    teacher or other officer of the school shall be appointed until
    the principal has been consulted.
