Notice to Mariners No. 5 of 1916.

PONUI PASSAGE.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTIC OF LIGHT.

NOTICE is hereby given that on and after Saturday, 29th January, 1916, the fixed white light with red arc now shown from the Ponui Passage Lighthouse will be changed to an unwatched Aga acetone acetylene flashing light showing a flash every 2 seconds, thus—½ second flash, 1½ seconds eclipse. There will be no change in the colour of the light, which should be seen at a distance of 10 miles.

BRAZIL.

RIO GRANDE DO SUL.—CHARACTERISTIC OF LIGHT.—LIGHT AND BELL BUOY MISSING.—The second officer of the British steamship “American Transport” reports that the light at Rio Grande do Sul shows fixed white; also that the fairway light and bell buoy is missing.

Approximate position of light: Lat. 32° 7′ 25″ S., long. 52° 4′ 33″ W.

CHILE.

ANCUD GULF.—DELCAHUE CHANNEL.—ASTILLERO SHOAL.—BEACON DESTROYED.—The tripod beacon, with cylindrical topmark, marking the south-eastern end of Astillero Shoal, has been destroyed, the wrecked beacon being covered at high water.

Notice will be given when the beacon is re-established.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—OAKLAND HARBOUR LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—On 1st December, 1915, the characteristic of Oakland Harbour light was changed from fixed to flashing white every 5 seconds, of 5,000 candle-power.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 48′ 2″ N., long. 122° 19′ 51″ W.

HUMBOLDT BAY ENTRANCE.—SHOAL.—DEPTHS.—An examination of the entrance channel at Humboldt Bay, made 1st December, 1915, shows that a shoal begins about 700 ft. westward of South Jetty Outer End buoy No. 2 and extends north-eastward across the channel. Over this there is a controlling depth of 15 ft. at mean lower low water.

There is a good channel around the end of the South Jetty extending south-westward to sea on either side of South Jetty Outer End buoy No. 2, having a depth of 27 ft. This channel is about 800 ft. wide.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SUISUN BAY.—MARTINEZ SHELL WHARF.—LIGHTS ESTABLISHED.—FOG-BELL TO BE ESTABLISHED.—On 1st December, 1915, two fixed red electric lights, of about 45 candle-power each, were established 15 ft. above the water, one on either corner, on the outer end of the Shell Company’s wharf at Martinez.

The eastern light is located on the bearings—
Army Point, tangent .. .. .. 6° 15′
Stack near Peyton .. .. .. 95° 30′
Port Costa Ferry Slip light .. .. 288° 30′

About 1st January, 1916, a fog-bell operated by machinery, and sounding 1 stroke every 5 seconds, will be established in the centre of the outer end of the wharf.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND.—BROUGHTON STRAIT.—MALCOLM ISLAND.—PULTNEY POINT LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-BELL ESTABLISHED.—A fog-bell which sounds 1 stroke every 25 seconds has been established at Pultney Point Light-station. The bell is suspended in front of a small square wooden tower, painted white, standing 42 ft. southward of the lighthouse.

The hand fog-horn formerly maintained at this station has been discontinued.

MAUI.—KAHULUI HARBOUR.—LIGHT MOVED.—On 19th November, 1915, Kahului Breakwater light was moved 280 yards 301° and re-established 39 ft. above the water and 31 ft. above the ground on a pyramidal skeleton tower on the breakwater, 25 yards from the outer end.

Approx. position: Lat. 20° 54′ 6″ N., long. 156° 28′ 13″ W.

BAY OF BENGAL.

HUGLI RIVER APPROACH.—EASTERN CHANNEL LIGHT-VESSEL TO BE MOVED.—About 7th January, 1916, Eastern Channel Light-vessel will be moved 3 miles 180° 30′ and re-established in 13½ fathoms of water, in (approximately) latitude 20° 56′ 42″ N., longitude 88° 12′ 7″ E.

The station buoy will be moored 1 mile 0° 30′ from the light-vessel.

SUMATRA.

EAST COAST.—BANKA ISLAND.—NORTH COAST.—TOTI ISLAND.—HEIGHT.—EXTENT OF REEF.—The master of the Netherlands Government steamer “Orion” reports that Toti Island is 410 ft. high, and that the reef which surrounds the island extends on the south-eastern side about 550 yards.

EAST INDIA ARCHIPELAGO.

JAVA SEA.—BAWEAN ISLAND.—SANGKAPURA BAY.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—A fixed red light has been established at Sangkapura. This light is exhibited 52½ ft. above high water from the flagstaff.

Approx. position: Lat. 5° 51′ 18″ S., long. 112° 39′ 20″ E.

JAPAN.

HONSHU.—SOUTH COAST.—YOKKAICHI ROAD.—CHANGE IN CHARACTERISTIC OF LIGHT.—The Japanese Government has given notice that on 1st December, 1915, the characteristic of the light inside the breakwater at Yokkaichi would be changed from fixed white to flashing white every 10 seconds.

The new light is a 6th-order light of 3,000 candle-power, visible 11½ miles.

AUSTRALIA.

EAST COAST.—CAIRNS HARBOUR.—LIGHTED BEACON MOVED.—The Government of Queensland has given notice that on 17th November, 1915, the fixed green pile light in the entrance to Cairns Harbour would be moved 150 ft. back from its old position and the old beacon (No. 9) would be removed.

The light in its new position marks the intersection of the old and new cuttings.

Vessels entering should keep the leading-lights in line until the green light is abeam, and then proceed as hitherto directed.
