Notice to Mariners No. 21 of 1916.

FIRTH OF THAMES.—PIAKO RIVER.—LEADING-LIGHTS.

Wellington, N.Z., 8th March, 1916.

REFERRING to Notice No. 84 of 1915 re the leading beacon-lights in Piako River, it is hereby notified that the front beacon is now 20 ft. in height and the rear beacon 33 ft.

These lights should be seen in clear weather for distance of about five miles.

Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Chart No. 2543; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter iv, page 92.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne; the Department of Navigation, New South Wales; and the Presidency, Port Office, Madras, are published for general information.

VICTORIA.

ALTERATION TO HARBOUR LIGHT, PORTLAND.

MARINERS and others are hereby notified that on or about 3rd April, 1916, the Portland Harbour light will be changed from a flashing green light to a flashing white light with the following character: Light 3-10ths of a second, eclipse 1·2 seconds; light 3-10ths of a second, eclipse 1·2 seconds; light 3-10ths of a second, eclipse 5·7 seconds.

The bearings between which the light is visible will not be altered.

Charts affected: Nos. 1063 and 2504.

ALTERATIONS TO LIGHTS, PORT PHILLIP.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that on or about 17th April, 1916, the following alterations will be made to the lights shown from Observatory Point and the South Channel Pile Lighthouse, Port Phillip:—

Observatory Point.

The present fixed white light on the skeleton beacon at Observatory Point will be changed to a flashing white light with the following character: Light 1½ seconds, followed by an eclipse of a similar period.

The bearings between which the light is visible will not be altered.

South Channel Pile Lighthouse.

The present fixed light on the South Channel Pile Lighthouse will be altered to a flashing light with the following character: Light 1½ seconds, followed by an eclipse of a similar period.

The bearings of the sectors will not be altered.

Charts affected: Nos. 1171A and 2747.

EASTERN LIGHTHOUSE, PORT PHILLIP.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that on 3rd April, 1916, the bearings of the various sectors of the light shown from the Eastern Lighthouse, Port Phillip, will be altered as follows: From seaward the light will show white between the bearings of E. by N. ½ N. (N. 73° E.) and S.E. by E. (S. 55° E.); red between the bearings of S.E. by E. (S. 55° E.) and S.E. ½ S. (S. 39° E.); and white between the bearings of S.E. ½ S. (S. 39° E.) and S. by W. ½ W. (S. 17° W.).
