PUGET SOUND.—COMMENCEMENT BAY.—BROWNS POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—About 1st February, 1916, the characteristic of Browns Point light will be changed from fixed white to flashing white of 190 candle-power every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 2·7 seconds.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SAMOA ISLANDS.—UPOLO ISLAND.—APIA HARBOUR.—REAR RANGE-LIGHT RE-ESTABLISHED.—BEACON REMOVED.—BEACON ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that the rear range-light at Apia Harbour has been re-established.

The light is fixed red, visible 9 miles, exhibited from a corrugated iron tower about 20 ft. high, painted white and red in horizontal bands, erected 1,274 yards 193° from the front light.

These lights in line 193° lead into Apia Harbour between the reefs and up to the mail steamers buoy.

Approx. position: Lat. 13° 50' 2" S. long. 171° 44' 33" W.

NOTE.—The beacon in this vicinity has been removed and should be expunged from the charts.

A beacon consisting of a square cement base with iron gallows-shaped topmark has been erected on the northern edge of the reef marked Cape Horn on the charts, 580 yards 359° from the front range-light.

Approx. position: Lat. 13° 49' 7" S., long. 171° 44' 20" W.

NOTE.—Positions refer to H.O. Chart No. 95.

APIA HARBOUR.—REAR LEADING-LIGHT RE-ESTABLISHED.—BEACON ERECTED.—(1.) Rear leading-light re-established:—

Position.—On Vaea Vorberg, at a distance of 6 cables and 74 yards, 193° (S. 3° W. mag.), from the front light near Mulivai River entrance. Lat. 13° 50' S., long. 171° 46¼' W.

Abridged description.—Lt. F., red, vis. 9 m.

Character.—A fixed red light.

Visibility.—9 miles.

Structure.—A corrugated iron tower about 20 ft. in height, painted white with red horizontal bands.

Remarks.—The beacon in this vicinity, marked “ (Posn. approx.) ” on the charts, is to be expunged.

Note.—These leading-lights in line bearing 193° (S. 3° W. mag.) lead into Apia Harbour between the reefs, and up to the mail steamers buoy.

FIJI ISLANDS.—SUVA HARBOUR.—BEACON-LIGHT AT ENTRANCE.—Notice is hereby given that a concrete beacon has been erected at the entrance to Suva Harbour. The concrete pillar is painted white, and is situated about one cable’s length from the edge of the Western Reef. Approximate position: Latitude 18° 8' 38" south, longitude 178° 24' east.

From this beacon will be exhibited on and after the first day of March, 1916, a Wigham occulting beacon-light visible all around the horizon. The light will be white and of one occultation every five seconds (light three seconds, eclipse two seconds). The focal plane of the light is 38 ft. 7 in. above high-water mark, and the light is visible from a ship’s deck for about six miles in clear weather.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

OAHU.—PEARL HARBOUR.—TEMPORARY BUOYS ESTABLISHED.—On 11th December, 1915, six temporary buoys were established in the eastern entrance channel to East Loch and off the northern and western shores of Mokuumeume (Ford Island), by the Navy Department, as follows:—

Eastern Entrance Channel.

First buoy, in about 5 fathoms of water, to mark the southern extremity of Ford Island Spit, 370 yards 217° from Ford Island Spit buoy 21.

Second buoy, in about 3½ fathoms of water, to mark the eastern side of the channel, 400 yards 172° from Ford Island Spit buoy 21.

Third buoy, in about 3¼ fathoms of water, to mark the southern point of McGrew’s Shoal, 350 yards 6° from Ford Island Spit buoy 23.

Northern and Western Shores of Ford Island.

Fourth buoy, in about 5¾ fathoms of water, to mark the north-eastern point of North Shoal, 1,100 yards 286° from Ford Island Spit buoy 23.

Fifth buoy, in about 7 fathoms of water, to mark the north-western point of North Shoal, 1,000 yards 61° from Peninsula Point Shoal buoy 1.

Sixth buoy, in about 6 fathoms of water, to mark the point of the shoal north-west of the ferry, 1,000 207° from Peninsula Point Shoal buoy 1.

These buoys are white cylindrical canvas floats about 5 ft. high.

INTENDED CHANGES IN BUOYAGE.—About 20th January, 1916, the following changes will be made in the buoyage of Pearl Harbour:—

Ford Island Spit buoy 21, a second-class can, will be established in about 5 fathoms of water.

East Side buoy 22, a second-class spar, will be established in about 4 fathoms of water.

Ford Island Spit buoy 21 will be renumbered 23, without other change.

McGrew’s Shoal buoy 24, a second-class spar, will be established in about 4 fathoms of water.

Ford Island Spit buoy 23 will be changed from a second-class can to a second-class spar and numbered 25, without other change.

Middle Loch Shoal buoy will be painted black and numbered 1, without other change.

Ford Island West End buoy 2, a second-class spar, will be established in about 4 fathoms of water.

Peninsula Point Shoal buoy 1 will be renumbered 3, without other change.

North Shoal buoy 4, a second-class spar, will be established in about 4 fathoms of water.

North Shoal buoy 6, a second-class spar, will be established in about 4 fathoms of water.

When the above changes are made the temporary buoys moored by the Navy Department will be discontinued.

MAUI.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—MAALAEA BAY.—KIHEI.—RANGE-LIGHTS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—LIGHT TO BE DISCONTINUED.—About 20th January, 1916, range-lights will be established at Kihei, as follows:—

Front Light.—Fixed red, of 50 candle-power, exhibited, 15 ft. above the water, from a pyramidal wooden frame tower 9 ft. high, on Kihei Wharf, 100 ft. from its outer end.

Rear Light.—Fixed white, of 160 candle-power, exhibited, 50 ft. above the water, from a pyramidal wooden frame tower 22 ft. high, 640 yards 55° from the front light.

These range-lights will be maintained by the Board of Harbour Commissioners of the Territory of Hawaii.

On the same date Kihei light will be permanently discontinued.

Approx. position: Lat. 20° 47' 3" N., long. 156° 27' 55" W.

WEST INDIES.—JAMAICA, PORT ROYAL.

(1.) GUN CAY LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Position.—Lat. 17° 55½' N., long. 76° 50¼' W.

New abridged description.—(U) Lt. fl., red, ev. 3 secs., 12 ft., vis. 5 m.

Details.—The fixed red light has been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics:—

Character.—A flashing red light every three seconds.

Elevation.—12 ft.

Visibility.—5 miles.

Remarks.—The light is unwatched.

(2.) RACKUM CAY LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—At a distance of about 1½ cables, south-westward, from Gun Cay light.

New abridged description.—(U) Lt. fl., ev. 3 secs., 15 ft., vis. 5 m.

Details.—The character of the light has been altered from fixed white to flashing white every three seconds.

Remarks.—The other details of the light remain unchanged.

PORTUGUESE EAST AFRICA.

PORT BARTHOLOMEW DIAZ APPROACH.—EXISTENCE OF A ROCK.

Position (approximate).—In the southern approach to Port Bartholomew Diaz, at a distance of about 3 miles, 94° (S. 73° E. mag.), from beacon No. 3 on Pedra Point. Lat. 21° 12¾' S., long. 35° 9¾' E.

Depth.—Less than 6 ft.

Note.—The rock is to be marked “ (Posn. approx.) ” on the plan.

Variation.—13° W.

Chart affected.—No. 648, Delagoa Bay to River Zambesi, with plan.

VICTORIA.

PORT OF GEELONG.—HOPETOUN CHANNEL.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that in connection with the widening of the Hopetoun Channel, and consequent removal of the beacons on the north side of the channel 100 ft. in a N. 17° W. direction mag. from their present position, that on or about the 13th instant the fixed white light exhibited from No. 2 (or the easternmost beacon on the north side of the channel) will be discontinued, and in lieu thereof, until further notice, a temporary white light 24 ft.
