CANADA, BRITISH COLUMBIA.—VANCOUVER ISLAND, NOOTKA SOUND.

NOOTKA LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER; OCCASIONAL FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.

(a.) LIGHT.—Date of alteration: On or about 1st December, 1915. Position: On the summit of San Rafael Island on the southern side of Friendly Cove. Lat. 49° 35½′ N., long. 126° 37½′ W. New abridged description: Lt. occ. ev. 15 secs., 108 ft., vis. 16 m. Alteration: The character of the light will be altered from fixed white to occulting white every fifteen seconds, thus—light 10 secs., eclipse 5 secs. Note: No further notice will be given.

(b.) FOG-SIGNAL.—Position: At the above light-station. Description: Hand fog-horn. Remarks: The fog-horn is sounded only in answer to vessels’ signals, and is to be marked “Occasl.” on the charts.

UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—WASHINGTON.

NEE’AH BAY LIGHT AND WHISTLE BUOY.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER OF LIGHT.

Position.—At a distance of about 4 cables, north-westward, from Waddah Island. Lat. 48° 23¼′ N., long. 124° 36½′ W.

Alteration.—The character of the light of Nee’ah Bay light and whistle buoy No. 2 has been altered from occulting white to flashing red every three seconds, thus—flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs.

Charts affected.—No. 1911, Juan de Fuca Strait, with plan; No. 1917, Vancouver Island; No. 2531, Cape Mendo-cino to Vancouver Island.

JAPAN.—HONSHU SOUTH COAST.

IRAKO SUIDO APPROACH.—EXISTENCE OF A WRECK.

Position.—In the eastern approach to Irako Suido, at a distance of 4·9 miles, 159° (S. 17° E. mag.), from O’Yama 1,086 ft. summit. Lat. 34° 31½′ N., long. 137° 11′ E.

Description.—The wreck of a large vessel.

Remarks.—The above wreck is marked by two buoys with a red flag, and a note to this effect is to be inserted on the charts.

Variation.—4° W.

Charts affected.—No. 952, Owashi Wan to Atsumi Wan; No. 996, Kii Suido to Tokyo.

UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—CALIFORNIA.

SAN LUIS OBISPO BAY.—EXISTENCE OF A SHOAL.

Position.—At a distance of 7½ cables, 94° (N. 77° E. mag.), from San Luis Point Lighthouse. Lat. 35° 9½′ N., long. 120° 44′ W.

Depth.—4⅔ fathoms.

Variation.—17° E.

Chart affected.—No. 2530, Plan of San Luis Obispo Bay.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE.—BONITA CHANNEL.—GAS AND BELL BUOY TO BE MOVED.—About 1st February, 1916, Bonita Channel gas and bell buoy 3 will be moved 100 yards 38° and re-established in 5 fathoms of water.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY APPROACH.—SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN FROM STATION.—RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL.—On 10th December, 1915, San Francisco light-vessel was temporarily withdrawn from her station and the station was marked by a relief light-vessel.

The relief light-vessel shows a light and sounds fog-signals having the same characteristics as those of the station vessel, except that the light is fixed white, shown from three lens-lanterns of 170 candle-power each, encircling the masthead at a height of 46 ft. above the water and visible 12 miles.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 45′ 3″ N., long. 122° 41′ 30″ W. H.O. Charts Nos. 527 and 1006.

ENGLAND, WEST COAST.

RIVER MERSEY.—PROHIBITED ANCHORAGE.

Mariners are hereby warned that, under the Defence of the Realm (Consolidation) Regulations, 1914, the following regulation has been made by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and is now in force:—

No vessel other than H.M. ships and merchant vessels acting under orders from the Senior Naval Officer, Liverpool, is to anchor within an area bounded as follows,—

(a.) On the North.—By a line drawn from the Mariners’ Home, Egremont, in the direction of the Hydraulic Tower on the south side of Canada Basin, for a distance of 1,350 yards.

(b.) On the South.—By a line drawn from Egremont Ferry Pier in the direction of the north entrance of Sandon Half-tide Dock, for a distance of 700 yards.

(c.) On the East.—By a line joining the eastern extremities of limits (a) and (b).

This regulation in no way affects the right of navigation through the area herein described.

CAUTION.

This Admiralty Notice to Mariners is issued under the provisions of the Defence of the Realm (Consolidation) Regulations, 1914, and failure to comply strictly with the directions contained in it will constitute an offence against those regulations.

Any person found guilty of such an offence is liable to severe penalties both of imprisonment and fine.

Any person aiding or abetting the commission of such an offence is himself guilty of an offence against the regulations.

Attention is also drawn to the fact that any infringement of the directions contained in this Admiralty Notice to Mariners is liable to result in the detention of the ship or vessel.

OREGON AND WASHINGTON.

COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY ESTABLISHED.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY DISCONTINUED.—On 9th December, 1915, Main Channel gas and whistle buoy 2, showing 16 ft. above the water, a flashing red light of 120 candle-power, every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 seconds eclipsed 2·7 seconds—was established in 11 fathoms of water on the bearings—

North Head Lighthouse .. .. 19° 00′

Radio .. .. 107° 30′

On the same date South Jetty gas and whistle buoy 2 was discontinued.

OREGON.

COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE.—BUOY MOVED.—On 13th December, 1915, Clatsop Spit buoy 4 was moved about ½ mile 112° 30′ and re-established, in 6 fathoms of water, on the bearings—

North Head Lighthouse .. .. 15° 30′
Entrance Range front light .. .. 73° 30′
Radio, Clatsop Spit .. .. 114° 00′

WASHINGTON.

PUGET SOUND.—ADMIRALTY INLET.—POINT HUDSON LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE ESTABLISHED.—About 1st February, 1916, a third-class reed horn, which will sound 1 group of 2 blasts every 20 seconds—thus, blast 3 seconds, silent 2 seconds; blast 1 second, silent 14 seconds—will be established at Point Hudson Light-station.

The horn will be placed in a gray frame building close to the light.

Approx. position: Lat. 48° 7′ 4″ N., long. 122° 44′ 54″ W.

OREGON AND WASHINGTON.

COLUMBIA RIVER ENTRANCE.—RANGE-LIGHTS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—INTENDED CHANGES IN BUOYAGE.—About 1st January, 1916, the following range-lights will be established to mark the main channel across the bar at the Columbia River entrance:—

Front Light.—Fixed red, exhibited about 189 ft. above high water, 60 yards 78° 30′ from Cape Disappointment Lighthouse.

Rear light.—Fixed red, exhibited about 234 ft. above high water, 657 yards 42° from the front light.

The following changes will be made in the buoyage;—

South Jetty gas and whistle buoy 2 S., showing 16 ft. above the water, a flashing white light of 390 candle-power every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 9 seconds—will be established in 5⅔ fathoms of water.

Clatsop Spit Jetty buoy, “Jetty,” painted in horizontal bands, will be discontinued.

Clatsop Spit buoy 6 will be moved about 335 yards 78° and re-established in 7 fathoms of water.

WASHINGTON.

STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA.—SLIP POINT LIGHT TO BE MOVED.—About 1st January, 1916, Slip Point light will be moved to a new tower attached to the western face of the fog-signal building. The height of the light will be increased to 72 ft. above high water and 35 ft. above the ground,
