the result of a poll of the ratepayers of the Hamiltons Deviation Special-rating District taken on the 21st day of October, 1916, on the proposal to borrow the sum of £900 for the purpose of taking, forming, and metalling a deviation on the Onewhero to Wairamarama main road: Total number of valid votes recorded, 131; for the proposal, 72; against the proposal, 59.
The number of valid votes recorded in favour of the proposal being less than three-fifths of the total number of valid votes recorded, I hereby declare the proposal to be lost.

Funds raised for the support of hospitals for horses and for the care of wounded horses, on behalf of or for transmission to headquarters of the “Blue Cross Society, London.”
Funds raised by ladies’ sewing or hospital guilds, where the whole of the moneys raised are used by the guilds for the purchase of material to be made up into articles of clothing, &c., or expended directly in the purchase of extra comforts for members of the forces. Funds raised for the purchase of ordinary military equipment are not included in this approval.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Booksellers’, Stationers’, and Fancy-goods Shops in the Borough of Gisborne, under the Shops and Offices Act.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of booksellers, stationers, and fancy-goods dealers within the Borough of Gisborne, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough should be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 o’clock p.m.; and Saturdays at 9.30 p.m.; Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, 12 o’clock p.m.:
And whereas the Gisborne Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of booksellers, stationers, and fancy-goods dealers within the Borough of Gisborne:
Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 6th day of November, 1916, all booksellers’, stationers’, and fancy-goods shops in the Borough of Gisborne shall be closed as follows: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9.30 p.m.; with the exception of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when the closing-hour shall be 12 midnight. The hours so fixed are, pursuant to subsection (4) of the above-mentioned section, to be observed subject to the closing at not later than 1 p.m. for the half-holiday on the statutory closing-day.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the hairdressers’, tobacconists’, and hairdressers and tobacconists’ shops within the City of Christchurch, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the city shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: 10 p.m. on Saturday, 9 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on the half-holiday, and 6 p.m. on the other three nights; with the following exceptions—9 p.m. on the evening before Good Friday; 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and 9 p.m. on Thursday, during Carnival Week: 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during National Week; 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; 9 p.m. on Thursday and 10 p.m. on Friday for shops closing at 1 p.m. on Saturday:
