Notice to Mariners No. 8 of 1916.
NELSON LIGHTHOUSE.—TIDAL SIGNALS DISCONTINUED.

Wellington, N.Z., 1st February, 1916.
NOTICE is hereby given that tidal signals are no longer
exhibited from the staff at the Nelson Lighthouse. In
future the staff will only be used for signalling vessels in cases
of emergency when required.

Kyau-chau Bay and Approach.—Light and Buoys to be
removed from Charts.
(1.) LIGHT.—Position: On Diederich’s Hill, lat. 36° 4′ N.,
long. 120° 19½′ E. Details: The fixed white light is no
longer exhibited and is to be expunged from the charts.
(2.) BUOYS.—Details: The undermentioned buoys are to
be expunged from the charts:—

(b.) Position: At a distance of 4 miles and 4 cables, 110°
(S. 66° E. mag.), from the above-mentioned lighthouse.
Depth: 4½ fathoms, sand.
Variation.—4° W.

River Hughli Approach, Sandheads.—Eastern Channel Light-
vessel.—Intended alteration in Position.
Date of alteration.—On or about 7th January, 1916.
New position.—At a distance of about 3 miles, southward,
from present position. Lat. 20° 56′ 42″ N., long. 88° 11′ 32″
E., on Chart No. 814.
Description.—As given in the Admiralty List of Lights.
Remarks.—The watch-buoy will be placed at a distance
of one mile, 1° (north mag.) from the new position of the light-
vessel.
Note.—No further notice will be given.
Variation.—1° E.
Charts affected.—No. 814, The Sandheads—False Point to
Matla River; No. 829, Cocanada to Bassein River; No. 70,
Bay of Bengal.

Alteration in Characteristics.
Date of alteration.—On or about 1st January, 1916.
Position.—On northern summit of Reef Island. Lat.
13° 36½′ N., long. 98° 12½′ E.
New abridged description.—Lt. occ., ev. 10 secs., 309 ft.,
vis. 12 m.
Details.—The fixed white light will be replaced by a light
having the undermentioned characteristics:—
Character.—An occulting white light every ten seconds,
thus—light 7½ secs., eclipse 2½ secs.
Elevation.—309 ft.
Visibility.—12 miles, from 164° (S. 17° E. mag.), through
south, to 7° (N. 6° E. mag.).
Power.—1,500 candles.
Structure.—White square masonry tower with circular
lantern, 31 ft. in height.
Note.—No further notice will be given.
Variation.—1° E.

Shab Nazar.—Existence of a Reef Eastward of.
Position (approximate).—Lat. 22° 20′ 30″ N., long. 38°
53′ 15″ E.
Description.—A coral reef awash, about a cable in extent
in an easterly and westerly direction.
Note.—The reef is to be marked “P.A.” on the charts.
Charts affected.—No. 8c, Red Sea, sheet 3; No. 2523, Red
Sea.

Notice to Mariners No. 10 of 1916.
WAIROA HARBOUR FLAGSTAFF LIGHT.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 1st February, 1916.
NOTICE is hereby given that the light from the old
flagstaff on Signal Hill, Wairoa Harbour, has been
moved to the new flagstaff which has been erected on the
west training-wall of the Wairoa Harbour-works. The
light will be 44 ft. above sea-level, and will be exhibited from
to-day.

Education Act, 1914.—Election of Member of General Council
of Education to fill Extraordinary Vacancy.

Wellington, 28th January, 1916.
IT is hereby notified that nominations will be received up
till 5 p.m. on Thursday, 17th February, 1916, from
certificated teachers on the South Island Public School Male
Teachers’ Roll to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused by
the resignation of
JOHN CAUGHLEY, Esq.
No person shall be eligible for election unless he is nominated in writing by at least two electors entitled to vote for
his election.
The nomination paper should be in the following form,
viz.:—
“We —[Names and addresses], being electors duly entered
on the [Name of roll] Roll for the election of members of the
General Council of Education, do hereby nominate [Nominee’s
name and address] as a candidate for election to the said
Council by the electors on the aforesaid roll at the election
