CALIFORNIA.

SAN DIEGO BAY.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.—About 15th April, 1915, a fixed white and green oil light will be established 10 ft. above the water, on a black 4-pile dolphin erected in 3 fathoms of water, at the junction of the main ship channel with the northern edge of the dredged channel leading to the Municipal Pier, on the bearings—

Spreckels’ and Pacific Navigation Company’s wharves .. .. .. 132° 15′
Old Tower, Point Loma .. .. .. 228° 00′
North wireless mast .. .. .. 261° 30′

The green light is of 8 candle-power, visible from 270° to 90°, the white light is of 50 candle-power, visible from 90° to 270°.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BURRARD INLET.—FIRST NARROWS.—PERIOD OF FOG-SIGNAL CHANGED.—The period of the fog-signal at the light-station on the northern shore of the First Narrows, Burrard Inlet, has been changed from 15 seconds to 8 seconds—thus, blast 1½ seconds, silent 6½ seconds.

Approx. position : Lat. 49° 18′ 53″ N., long. 123° 7′ 54″ W.

BAY OF BENGAL.

HUGLI RIVER.—NIGHT NAVIGATION PROHIBITED.—Navigation of the Hugli River at night is prohibited both in time of peace and war.

WASHINGTON.

WILLAPA BAY APPROACH.—OUTSIDE BAR GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY.—CHARACTERISTIC OF LIGHT TO BE CHANGED.—About 1st July, 1915, the characteristic of the light exhibited from Willapa Bay Outside Bar gas and whistle buoy will be changed from occulting to flashing white every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 2·7 seconds.

CHINA.

EAST COAST.—KIAO-CHOW BAY.—TSINGTAU.—YUNUISAN LIGHTHOUSE DESTROYED.—Yunuisan Lighthouse has been destroyed.

Approx. position : Lat. 36° 2′ 42″ N., long. 120° 16′ 38″ E.

CANTON RIVER.—SAM-PAN-CHAU.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—The Chinese Government has given notice that on 30th March, 1915, a 1st-order dioptric flashing white light every 4 seconds—thus, flash 0·4 second, eclipsed 3·6 seconds—was established on Sam-pan-chau.

The light is exhibited 95 ft. above high water from a brick tower, 58 ft. high, painted white, erected on the south-eastern-most islet, and is visible 15 miles.

The fog-signal is an automatic acetylene fog-gun, which sounds 1 report every 30 seconds.

Approx. position : Lat. 22° 43′ 7″ N., long. 113° 39′ 28″ E.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SOCIETY ISLANDS. — TAHITI. — PAPIETE PASS. — RANGE-LIGHTS DESTROYED. — BEACONS REMOVED. — RADIO TOWERS ERECTED. — The two range-lights leading through Papiete Pass have been destroyed, and the entrance is now marked by two unlighted, white, triangular, wooden beacons.

The white truncated pyramidal beacon standing on the mound in the ravine, in line with the range-lights, has been removed, as has also Beacon B (white obelisk) of the entrance range for sailing-vessels.

At the site of the old arsenal near Fareute Point two black wooden columns, square in section, surmounted by iron masts, have been erected. These columns are the towers of a radio station in course of construction, and constitute conspicuous marks from seaward.

WEST COAST OF HINDUSTAN.

BOMBAY.—PASSAGE PROHIBITED AT NIGHT.—No vessel may enter or leave the Port of Bombay between the hours of sunset and sunrise, and no vessel between these hours is allowed to nav. within the limits of the port. Any vessel disobeying these rules is liable to be fired on, and also to prosecution by the Port Authorities. Position : Bombay Lt.-v, 18° 49′ N., 72° 47′ E. May.

CHINA.

KYAU-CHAU BAY APPROACH.—An isolated rk., carrying 5 fms., exists in 35° 54⅜′ N., 120° 15⅞′ E., 1·9 miles 79° (N. 83° E. mag.) from Princess Rk. Note.—“P.A.” is to be charted against this rk., which has been temp. marked by a red buoy. May.

KYAU-CHAU BAY.—TRAFFIC TEMP. PROHIBITED.—A fairway buoy is est. 33·7 cables 356° (N. mag.) from the summit of Tai-kung-tau (35° 57⅜′ N., 120° 29¼′ E.). Owing to dangers, traffic is temp. prohibited within the following area: On the E., by a line from the above fairway buoy, through the summit of Tai-kung-tau, to the srd. On the W., by the coast of Hai-hsi Penin. On the N., by a line joining Pile Pt., the N.E. extr. of Hai-hsi Penin., and the fairway buoy. On the S., by a line, Kaiser Pt., the S.W. extr. of Hai-hsi Penin., 266° (W. mag.). May.

AUSTRALIA.

Northern Territory.

EMERY POINT, PORT DARWIN.—ALTERATION OF LIGHT.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1915, mariners and others are hereby notified that the light on Emery Point, Port Darwin, is now altered experimentally.

Position: Lat. 12° 27′ S., long. 130° 49′ E. Structure: Steel skeleton tower, 31 ft. high, painted white. Character and colour: Single flashing white light, with red sector, showing one flash every three seconds—thus, flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs. Sector: Shows white from 335° (N. 28° W. mag.) through north and east to 139° (S. 44° E. mag.), red thence to 181° (S. 2° E. mag.), obscured elsewhere. Elevation: 60 ft. Visibility: White, 13 miles; red, 6 miles. Publications affected: Admiralty List of Lights and Time Signals, Part VI; Australian Directory, Vol. III. Charts affected: Admiralty Charts 613, 925 (2991).

FORT POINT, PORT DARWIN.—NEW LIGHT.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 2 of 1915, mariners and others are hereby notified that the new light at Fort Point, Port Darwin, is now exhibited experimentally.

Position: Lat. 12° 28′ S., long. 130° 51′ E. Structure: Iron post, 9 ft. high, painted white. Character and colour: A group flashing white light with red sector, showing a group of two flashes every six seconds—thus, flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 0·9 sec.; flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 4·5 secs. Sector: Shows white from 251° (S. 68° W. mag.) through west, north, and east to 97° (S. 86° E. mag.), red thence to 115° (S. 68° E. mag.), obscured elsewhere. Elevation: 20 ft. Visibility: White, ten miles; red, five miles. Publications affected: Admiralty List of Lights and Time Signals, Part VI; Australian Directory, Vol. III. Charts affected: Admiralty Charts 613, 925 (2991).

Queensland.

LIGHTED GAS-BUOY.—SMITH ROCK.—ENTRANCE TO MORETON BAY.—Notice is hereby given that, on or about the 24th June next, a lighted gas-buoy, painted red, with iron skeleton superstructure, will be moored in approximately the same position as the present unlighted buoy, which will be removed.

Character of light.—White, occulting; height of focal plane, 13 ft. 1½ in. above water-level; distance visible in clear weather, 9 to 10 miles.

New South Wales.

STEAM TRAWLERS.—It is hereby notified, for general information, that the steam trawlers acquired by the Government of New South Wales, to initiate the deep-sea trawling industry off the coast of New South Wales, will shortly commence operations, and while engaged in trawling will display the regulation lights and signals for vessels of their class.

Masters of vessels passing the trawlers must carefully observe the Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, prescribed in regard to vessels engaged in trawling or net fishing.

NEWCASTLE HARBOUR.—It is hereby notified, for public information, that the signal-station at the Port of Newcastle has been removed from Fort Scratchley (commonly known as Signal Hill) to Nobby’s, where all signals will continue to be exhibited upon the masts erected for that purpose. The exhibition of the electric-light tide-signals is deferred for the present.

Victoria.

HOPETOUN CHANNEL, PORT OF GEELONG.—Mariners and others are hereby notified that the dredger “Thomas Bent” will, on or about the 14th June, 1915, resume dredging at the eastern end of Hopetoun Channel.

The usual signals will be exhibited from the dredger, viz.: By day a basket ball, and by night two vertical red lights 6 ft. apart, also an anchor light at the stem and stern.

When not working, the dredger will (weather permitting) be moored on the north side of, and clear of, the channel.

In connection with the dredging operations, two outriggers will be placed on the north (or channel) side of the black (or port hand) beacons, and extending 17 ft. therefrom; care should be taken to avoid fouling the same.

CAUTION.—Should the extra lights required on the dredger cause any difficulty to persons in charge of steamers navigating the channel, it is requested that one prolonged blast of the steamer’s whistle should be given, upon which the extra light will be extinguished, and remain so until such vessel has passed the dredger. Persons navigating the channel must pass the dredger at the slowest possible speed, and stop the engines whilst passing over the dredger’s chains.
