(3.) GENERAL SEABOARD.—INSTRUCTIONS WITH REGARD TO ENTERING MINED PORTS.—DETAILS.—In order to avoid accidents, vessels must carefully follow the directions received from the guard-boats or conveyed by other means. For identification purposes the guard-boats will make the following signals :—
By day and in clear weather, the International code signal “M.N.”
By night, the Morse signal - — - - continuously repeated.
During fog, guns or rifles will be fired.
If not hailed by the guard-boat, vessels should stop, and make the signal for a pilot, and await the arrival of the guard-boat at the position mentioned below :—
(a.) Channels in Stockholm Reefs :
Vessels wishing to enter Furusund channel should stop at Hogskär cairn, Lerskär, or at Lunsen south-west of Växlet.
Those wishing to enter Sandhamn channel, at Sandö, Djurhamn, or Klofholm.
Those wishing to enter Dalarö channel, at Little Rotholm.
Vessels leaving, which are proceeding from Tralhav, through Lindalssund, to Kanholmsfjard, should use the channel past Sandö sugga, Kalfö, and Puttisholm on to Sollenkrokao.
Vessels going out by Furusund channel should stop at Ostana, Granhamn, or Frovaliskar.
Those going out by Sandhamn channel, at Kalfö.
Those going out by Dalarö channel, at Dalarö fort.
(b.) Entrance to Södertelje :
Vessels entering should stop at Axviksholmar in Himmerfjarden.
Vessels leaving, at Horningsnas.
(c.) Entrance to Farosund :
Vessels entering should stop at a distance of one mile 180° (S. 9° W. mag.) from Bungeor beacon.
Vessels leaving should inform the berthing master.
(d.) Entrance to Karlskrona :
Vessels entering the south channel should stop close southward of a line joining Flaggrund with Esten.
Those entering the west channel, close southward of a line joining Lindo udde with Stangskar cairn.
Vessels leaving should inform the authorities.
(e.) Entrance to Goteborg :
Vessels entering should stop either on the line joining Skalkorgarna with Gefveskar, or off Skifteskar cairn.
Vessels leaving, at Nya varvet (the new dockyard).
(f.) Entrance to Uddevalla :
Vessels entering should stop at Great Astol.
Vessels leaving, in Askerofjord.
Variation.—9° W.
Note.—The foregoing notice embodies all information, previously issued in connection with War operations, affecting navigation within the area concerned.
NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
GILBERT ISLANDS.—DISCOLOURED WATER REPORTED.—Position : Lat. 1° N., long. 174° 44′ E. Details : Discoloured water, apparently indicating the existence of a pinnacle rock was sighted by the s.s. “Polenia” in the above position. Note : The position on the charts is to be surrounded by a danger line and marked “discoloured water reported (1914).”
TURKEY.
CAUTION re EXTINCTION OF LIGHTS.—Former Notice No. 1641 of 1914 is hereby cancelled. Details : With the exception of the lights in the Sea of Marmara, all Turkish lights are extinguished, including Jebel Teir, Zebayir Islands, Abu Ail Islands, and Mokha in the Red Sea.
CHINA, EAST COAST.
YANG-TSE-KIANG.—TSUNG MING CROSSING, WEST SPIT LIGHT-BUOY.—ALTERATION IN POSITION.—New position : In a depth of 44 ft., at a distance of about 6½ cables, south-eastward from former position, and 2 miles and 1·6 cables, 58° (N. 61° E. mag.) from Sloping Clump. Lat. 31° 28′ 11″ N., long. 121° 28′ 7″ E., on Chart No. 3585. Description : Light-buoy, painted in black and red vertical stripes, exhibiting an occulting white light. Note : The depth of water at the north-eastern end of the crossing has decreased to 16 ft. Variation : 3° W.
PANAMA.
LIMON BAY.—SHOAL.—CAUTION.—A 17 ft. shoal exists in Limon Bay, 2,325 yards 129° from Toro Point Lighthouse, and the ground within a radius of ¼ mile of this shoal must be considered dangerous.
CAUTION.—This danger is not shown on Isthmian Canal Commission Chart No. 1 of the Panama Canal, and mariners making use of this chart should do so with caution.

URUGUAY.
PLATA RIVER.—ENGLISH BANK.—TEMPORARY LIGHT-BUOY REPLACED BY LIGHT, WHISTLE, AND SUBMARINE BELL BUOY.—The temporary light-buoy, moored on the eastern side of English Bank, has been replaced by a light, whistle, and experimental submarine bell buoy, showing 30 ft. above the water a flashing white light every 6 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 5 seconds—visible 11 miles.
The experimental submarine bell sounds 1 stroke every 30 seconds, and until further notice mariners are warned not to place too much reliance on this bell.
Approx. position : Lat. 35° 11′ 15″ S., long. 55° 43′ 15″ W.
BRITISH COLUMBIA.
VANCOUVER ISLAND.—SOUTH-WEST COAST.—ESPERANZA INLET.—ROLLING ROADSTEAD.—UNCHARTED ROCK.—A rock about 10 yards in extent, with a depth of 2½ fathoms over it, covered with kelp, has been discovered in Rolling Roadstead, on the bearings—
Double Island, south tangent 93°
Black Rock . . . 170°, distant 1.11 miles.
Approx. position : Lat. 49° 50′ 40″ N., long. 127° 2′ W.
JAPAN.
WEST COAST OF KYUSHU.—Notice is hereby given that the following permanent light will be shown at Io-jima Lighthouse, entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, Province of Hizen, on and after the 14th of November, 1914, and the temporary light will be withdrawn at the same time.
Io-jima Lighthouse.—Character of light : fourth-order group flashing white, showing quadruple flash in quick succession during fifteen (15) seconds, followed by an eclipse of fifteen (15) seconds. Candle-power : 18,000. Position, description, and others remain ; no change.
SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT.—YOJIBEI LIGHTED WRECK BUOY.—Notice is hereby given that Yojibei lighted wreck buoy in the vicinity of Yojibei-iwa, Shimonoseki Strait, has been permanently withdrawn.
GULF OF TOKYO.—Notice is hereby given that the character and candle-power of the light of Haneda Lighthouse outside of Haneda Spit, Gulf of Tokyo, will be changed as follows about the beginning of December, 1914 :—
Haneda Lighthouse.—Character of light : Pintsch’s gas, occulting green, light four (4) seconds, eclipse three (3) seconds. Candle-power : 200. Further notice will be given after the above changes have been made.
SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT.—NEWLY ESTABLISHED LIGHTHOUSE TO BE SHOWN.—Notice is hereby given that the newly established Ganryu-jima Lighthouse on the S.E. end of Ganryu-jima, W. entrance to Shimonoseki Strait, Inland Sea, will be shown as follows on and after the 10th of December, 1914 :—
Ganryu-jima Lighthouse.—Position : lat. 33° 56′ 4″ N., long. 130° 55′ 42″ E. (according to the Japanese Admiralty Chart No. 135). Description : circular stone tower, red and white horizontal bands. Height of light : 25 shaku above the base, and 27 shaku above the water. Character of light : Pintsch’s gas, occulting red, light three (3) seconds, eclipse three (3) seconds. Illuminated arc : an arc 175° 30′, from S. 29° 30′ W., through W. and N., to N. 25° E. (magnetic bearings taken from seaward). Candle-power : 80. Visible distance : 8 nautical miles in clear night. The light being unwatched, should the light go out by accident there may be some delay in relighting it.

LIGHTED AND WHISTLING BUOY AT LYTTLETON HEADS.

Wellington, N.Z., 18th January, 1915.
THE Lyttelton Harbour Board has notified that the lighted and whistling buoy at Lyttelton Heads will be removed for cleaning and painting when the weather permits, and that it will be replaced meanwhile by a large can buoy painted white.
