Notice to Mariners No. 52 of 1915.

PORT NICHOLSON.—LEADING-LIGHTS FOR ENTERING HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 23rd June, 1915.

REFERRING to Notices to Mariners No. 116, of the 28th November, 1913, and No. 13, of the 17th February, 1915, the Wellington Harbour Board have noticed that both these lights have now been completed, and it is proposed to light same on and after the 15th day of July, 1915.

The northern beacon, which is already lighted (see Notice No. 13 of 1915), is an open steel tower structure, painted white, supported by a concrete foundation, and is erected on the western edge of the Hope Shoal, off Ward Island, in 9 ft. of water, and vessels are cautioned not to approach closer than 2 cables on the western side. The light, which is an unwatched one, is 55 ft. above high water. It is occulting, showing white from 20½° (N. 4° E. magnetic) round by north to 354½° (N. 22° W. magnetic), red from 354½° (N. 22° W. magnetic) round by west and south to 120° (S. 76½° E. magnetic), and obscured from 120° (S. 76½° E. magnetic) to 20½° (N. 4° E. magnetic), and flashes light for 2 seconds, followed by darkness for 2 seconds, giving 15 flashes per minute.

The southern beacon is a pile structure erected 1 mile 3½ cables due south (magnetic) from the northern beacon, in 35 ft. of water. It is surmounted by a white occulting light, 16 ft. above high water, visible all round the horizon, and flashing 3/10 seconds light, followed by an eclipse for 7/10 seconds, giving 60 flashes per minute. This light, when in line with that of the northern beacon, will lead up to the centre of the deep-water channel at the entrance on a bearing of 16½° (north magnetic). Vessels must pass to westward of
