CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1914, was estimated to be 2,466, of whom 117 were females.
REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 11,334, or at the rate of 1·04 per cent., during the year. Excess of births over deaths contributed 18,192 extra persons to the total, but the departure of Expeditionary Forces for the Front caused a net migration decrease of 6,858.
The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1914 was 25·99 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 9·31, as against 26·14 and 9·47 respectively in 1913.
The deaths in 1914 (10,146) were more than the number registered in 1913 (10,119) by 27, but the rate per 1,000 fell from 9·47 to 9·31.
