Arrivals and Departures in 1914.

TABLES showing the numbers of arrivals in and departures from New Zealand during the year 1914, with totals for the previous nine years by way of comparison, are published for general information.

The total number of persons who arrived in the Dominion during 1914 was 37,646, and the departures during the year numbered 32,506, the excess of arrivals over departures for the year being 5,140.

According to returns furnished by the Immigration officers, 8,579 persons arrived from the United Kingdom, and 2,574 persons departed therefor during the year. From the Commonwealth of Australia the arrivals are returned as numbering 25,967 persons, and the departures thereto as 26,693 persons. Arrivals and departures from and to other countries were 3,100 and 3,239 persons respectively.

Of the 37,646 persons who came to New Zealand last year, 4,266, or 11·33 per cent. of the total, were children—i.e., under twelve years of age; and of the 32,506 departures the children numbered 2,819, or 8·67 per cent.

The departures shown do not include 11,998 members of the Expeditionary Forces which have left the Dominion since the outbreak of the war with Germany.
