GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
The sections included in the block are situated to the south-west of Waitakaruru, on the Hauraki Plains, and extend from the low-lying swamp country within three miles of Waitakaruru to the western watershed of the Thames Valley.
The main road access is from Waitakaruru, three miles distant from the northern end of the block, of which distance one mile is a shell bank suitable for all traffic, while the balance is only partially formed, but suitable for summer traffic.
The most distant point on the block is twelve miles from Waitakaruru, which has a regular bi-weekly launch service to Thames, twelve miles distant, whilst in addition launches run at irregular intervals. At Waitakaruru there is a post-office, with telephonic communication to Thames, two stores, and a saleyard, and before long a small township will be cut up in the vicinity.
From Waitakaruru there is a good road to Pipiroa, five miles and three-quarters distant on the Piako River, where there is a regular daily launch service to Thames. Of this road three miles and a quarter have been metalled, the balance being formed for dray traffic.
Access can also be obtained from Pokeno Railway-station, on the Main Trunk Railway, about twenty-four miles distant from the western boundary of the block, on the Pokeno Road, which is formed for dray traffic with the exception of the last mile.
Morrinsville Railway-station is thirty-five miles distant from the south end of the settlement, the whole distance being suitable for dray traffic. The last mile and a half of the road outside the block are not formed, but this work will be undertaken at an early date.
Ohinewai Railway-station can also be reached by means of the Kaihere Road, a distance of thirty miles, of which a mile and a half are unformed.
The nearest school is about half a mile outside the block, on the road to Waitakaruru, but a site has been reserved at the junction of the Cross Road with the Morrinsville-Waitakaruru Road in the centre of the block.
The country comprises low-lying swamp country, varying from alluvial flats covered with kahikatea bush to shallow peat swamp near Waitakaruru, easy rolling fern-covered ploughable hills, steep to broken fern spurs, and bush-covered hills in the west.
The altitude ranges from a few feet to 1,300 ft. above sea-level.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this seventeenth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and fourteen.
