✨ Maritime Notices and Unclaimed Property
Jan. 7.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 107
CANAL ZONE.—BALBOA.—DUMPING-GROUNDS.—BUOYS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—CAUTION.—Owing to dredged material from the canal being dumped to the southward and westward of the Pacific entrance, causing a less depth of water than is shown on the charts, mariners are warned to keep to the northward and eastward of the extension of the axis of the Panama Canal and to the eastward of a line running north and south through San José Rock and Taboguilla Island.
The dumping-grounds will be marked by a line of unnumbered black buoys moored 0·5 mile apart and moved from time to time without further notice. These buoys may show fixed white lights, but are not to be depended upon by vessels, as they are intended for towboats engaged on dredging operations.
The first buoy will be located ¼ mile to the seaward of the dumping-ground and on a line bearing 173° 30′ joining entrance buoy No. 1 and Taboguilla Island and 0·5 mile from entrance buoy No. 1.
The second buoy will be located 0·5 mile from the former buoy and 1 mile 173° 30′ from entrance buoy No. 1. The remainder of the buoys will be located on a line passing through this second buoy with Commission Rock and Melones Island in line bearing 235°.
NORTH COAST.—LAGARTO.—REEF REPORTED TO NORTHWARD.—The commanding officer of the U.S.S. “Leonidas” reports a reef with a least depth of 6 fathoms over it, about 1 mile long in a northeast-southwest direction northward of Lagarto, and about 2 miles off shore.
This ledge is not marked by breakers in ordinary weather.
Approximate position of Lagarto: Latitude 9° 13′ N., longitude 80° 8′ W.
NEW CHART.—The Governor of the Panama Canal has caused to be prepared a chart of the Panama Canal. This chart, printed in two sheets by the United States Lake Survey Office of the War Department, is now on sale by the Hydrographic Office and its agents, the price being $0.20 for each sheet.
URUGUAY.
PLATA RIVER.—ENGLISH BANK.—LIGHT-BUOY CARRIED AWAY.—TEMPORARY LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.—The submarine bell and whistle buoy, showing a flashing white light, moored on English Bank has been carried away by storms. A light-buoy showing a flashing white light, visible 9·5 miles, but without the bell or whistle, has been temporarily established to replace this buoy.
JAVA.
NORTH COAST.—BATAVIA ROADSTEAD.—LIGHT-BUOY TEMPORARILY REPLACED BY UNLIGHTED BUOY.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the light-buoy exhibiting a flashing white light marking the north-eastern edge of Van Dorth Reef, in (approximately) latitude 6° 4′ 6″ S., longitude 106° 52′ 36″ E., has been replaced by a conical buoy with a ball topmark, painted white and black in horizontal bands.
NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN.
GILBERT ISLANDS.—ROCK REPORTED.—Capt. I. R. Handley, master of the schooner “Polenia,” reports under date of 17th July, 1914, having observed what was apparently a pinnacle rock about 70 ft. in extent with the sea lifting over it eastward of Tarawa Island, in (approximately) latitude 1° N., longitude 174° 44′ E.
The vessel was brought to the wind and the mate sent away to sound, but was unable to locate from the small boat. From aloft the discolouration and lift of the sea was plainly visible.
NEW SOUTH WALES.
ALTERATION IN THE CHARACTER OF THE LIGHT AT CORRIE CREEK, DUCK HOLE, PORT STEPHENS.—It is hereby notified, for the information of masters and others interested in the navigation of vessels, that on and after the 1st day of November, 1914, the character of the fixed red light established at Corrie Creek, Duck Hole, Port Stephens, in 1913 will be changed to a fixed light, red and white sectored.
The northern side of the light will be the white sector, and when steered directly for from the westward it will lead clear of Ballast Point and into Corrie Creek Channel.
VICTORIA.
NEW PIER EXTENSION, PORTLAND HARBOUR.—Mariners and others are hereby notified that works for extending the new or deep-water pier at Portland are in progress. In the meantime the permanent green light at the original outlet end of the pier will be maintained in its present position, but an additional fixed white light will be shown from the outer end of the new works as they extend outward. Such additional white light will be exhibited from the 1st November, 1914, and will be shown nightly until the extension is completed, unless weather conditions should be so adverse as to prevent its exhibition.
QUEENSLAND.
ALTERATION OF LEADING-BEACONS.—TOWNSVILLE HARBOUR.—Notice is hereby given that it is intended to alter the position of the front and back beacons now used as leading-marks for entering the Townsville Harbour, and the new beacons will come into use on and after 20th November, 1914.
Between the 18th and 20th instant, during the time the beacons are in course of alteration, and as a temporary expedient, in place of the back beacon, which will be dismantled, a black stripe will be painted on the eastern corner of the roof of the Harbour Board Offices, which, kept in line with the existing front beacon, will bring a vessel in on the present line of leads during daytime, while for night use the back light will be shown from the eastern corner of the Harbour Board Offices. When the new line of beacons is established, the present front beacon will be demolished, but mariners should specially note that so long as this beacon is in position it is to be kept in line with the black stripe on the eastern corner of the roof of the Harbour Board Offices.
The height of the new beacons when erected will be as follows: Front, 40 ft., back, 60 ft.; they will be 2,013 ft. apart, and when in line will bear S. 24° 30′ W.
Charts affected: Nos. 1102, 348, 2349; “Australia Directory,” Vol. ii.
NORTH-WEST CHANNEL, ENTRANCE TO MORETON BAY.—ALTERATION LINE OF LIGHTS, BRIBIE ISLAND.—GAS-BUOY TO BE PLACED ON THE NORTH EXTREME OF THE NORTH BANKS.—Notice is hereby given that on Tuesday, 15th December, the front light-tower at Bribie will be moved 190 ft. north from its present position. From the flagstaff at the lighthouse the signal UQE (not removed) will be flown from daylight on the 15th until the lighthouse is actually being moved. During the removal of the light, FI (caution is requisite) will be flown, and after the removal of the lighthouse to its new position TPU (proper position) will be flown until sundown. On and after the above date, weather permitting, the black buoy, marking the northern extreme of the North Banks, will be replaced by a gas-buoy showing an occulting white light.
After the removal of the front light the lighthouses are to be used in line bearing S. 52½° W., and will lead one cable clear of the extremity of the North Bank and of the gas-buoy. The least water in this channel will be 6 fathoms L.W.O.S.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
RIVOLI BAY.—BEACHPORT JETTY LIGHT.—Masters of vessels and others are hereby informed that, on and after the night of 18th November, a Chance Bros.’ sixth-order port light will be exhibited from the sea end of the Beachport Jetty, in place of the inferior light previously shown.
The light is exhibited from a cast-iron pillar painted red, its focal plane being 25 ft. above ordinary high water, showing a fixed white light, as heretofore, between the bearings of 1° (N. 5° 10′ W. mag.) and 13° (N. 6° 50′ E. mag.), and a red sector between the bearings of 1° (N. 5° 10′ W. mag.), and 283° (N. 83° W. mag.).
In clear weather the white light should be visible for a distance of about 10 miles, and the red light about 3 miles.
Approximate position: Lat. 37° 29′ 52″ S., long. 140° 1′ 43″ E.
This affects Admiralty Chart No. 1007.
