CALIFORNIA.
SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—GRANT AVENUE PIER.—LIGHT AND
FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.—On 14th May, 1914, a fixed red
light of about 80 candle-power was established by the State
Board of Harbour Commissioners on Grant Avenue Pierhead,
San Francisco Bay, California, on the bearings—
Goat Island Lighthouse .. .. .. 95° 30'
Fort Point Lighthouse .. .. .. 270° 00'
Alcatraz Lighthouse .. .. .. 330° 00'
On the same date an automatically operated 1,500-pound
fog-bell was established at the same point to sound 1 group of
2 strokes every 4 seconds—thus, stroke, silent interval 1 second ;
stroke, silent interval 3 seconds.
Approx. position : Lat. 37° 48' 40'' N., long. 122° 24' 30'' W.
PENINSULA POINT.—GAS AND BELL BUOY ESTABLISHED.—On 22nd May, 1914, Peninsula
Point gas and bell buoy 1, conical, with pyramidal skeleton
superstructure, showing a flashing white light every 15 seconds.
—thus, flash 5 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds—was established
off Peninsula Point, San Francisco Bay, California, in place
of Peninsula Point bell-buoy 1, which was discontinued.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE.—GAS AND WHISTLE
BUOY REPLACED BY WHISTLE-BUOY.—On 5th June, 1914,
Inside Bar whistle-buoy, painted in perpendicular stripes,
was established at San Francisco Bay entrance, California,
in place of Inside Bar gas and whistle-buoy 2A, which was
discontinued.

SAN PABLO BAY.—CARQUINEZ STRAIT.—BUOY MOVED.—
On 4th June, 1914, San Pablo Bay buoy 1, a first-class can,
Carquinez Strait, San Pablo Bay, California, was moved
about 265 yards 234° 30' and re-established in 4 3/8 fathoms of
water.
Approx. position : Lat. 38° 4' 7'' N., long. 122° 15' 4'' W.
SEA-COAST.—ELK HARBOUR.—BELL-BUOY ESTABLISHED.—
On 6th June, 1914, Elk Harbour bell-buoy E H, painted in
perpendicular stripes, was established in 18 fathoms of water
off the entrance to Elk Harbour, sea-coast of California, on
the bearings—

ALAMEDA CHANNEL.—BUOYS TO BE ESTABLISHED.—About
1st July, 1914, the following buoys, each a second-class spar,
will be established in about 4 1/2 fathoms of water to mark
the newly dredged channel, Alameda Channel, San Francisco
Bay, California :—
Alameda Channel Buoy 1, on the bearings—
Bay Farm Island, tangent to wharf .. 177° 30'
Oakland Harbour Lighthouse .. .. 286° 00'
Oakland City Hall Tower .. .. 330° 30'
Alameda Channel Buoy 3, on the bearings—

SAN PEDRO BAY.—LONG BEACH.—BELL-BUOY TO BE
ESTABLISHED.—About 15th June, 1914, Long Beach bell-
buoy 1 will be established in 5 1/4 fathoms of water about
5/8 mile off the end of the west jetty at the entrance to
Long Beach Harbour, San Pedro Bay, California, on the
bearings—
Long Beach Wharf, tangent .. .. 61° 30'
Deadmans Island Breakwater Light .. 239° 00'
West Jetty, right tangent .. .. 336° 00'
SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE.—GAS AND WHISTLE
BUOY TO BE REPLACED BY WHISTLE-BUOY.—About 1st June,
1914, Inside Bar whistle-buoy, painted in perpendicular
stripes, will be established at San Francisco Bay entrance,
California, in place of Inside Bar gas and whistle buoy 2A,
which will then be discontinued.
Approx. position : Lat. 37° 46' 50'' N., long. 122° 34' 30'' W.
ALVISO CHANNEL.—BEACON DISCONTINUED.—On 15th May,
1914, Alviso Channel beacon 3, San Francisco Bay, California,
was permanently discontinued.

CHILE.
MAGELLAN STRAIT.—CAPE POSSESSION LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—Information has been received that
Cape Possession light, Magellan Strait, Chile, has been changed
from fixed and flashing to flashing white every 30 seconds—
thus, flash 6 seconds, eclipsed 24 seconds.
Approx. position : Lat. 52° 17' 54'' S., long. 68° 57' 10'' W.
VALPARAISO HARBOUR.—BREAKWATER UNDER CONSTRUCTION.—BUOYS ESTABLISHED.—The Chilian Government has
given notice that a breakwater is under construction off
Duprat Point, Valparaiso Harbour, Chile. When completed,
the breakwater will extend 317 yards 80° from the point,
with a width of about 15 yards above water. The rubble
work will extend from the point 400 yards, with a width of
117 yards at the extremity, narrowing toward the shore.
The following buoys have been established to mark the
construction work and the area prohibited to navigation :—

on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, as follows :—

If for any reason the Arlington Station is out of commission,
the time-signals will be sent at noon daily, Sundays and
holidays excepted, by the stations at Newport, New York,
Norfolk, and Charleston.
The time for the Atlantic Coast is sent from the Naval
Observatory at Washington, and for the Pacific Coast from
the observatory at Mare Island Navy Yard.

SOUTHERN ISLANDS.—LANGDALE (ABREOJOS) ISLAND.—INFORMATION.—The following information concerning Langdale
(Abreojos) Island, Southern Islands, Japan, has been received
from the Hydrographic Office, Tokyo :—
Since Abreojos or Langdale Island was placed on the charts
information respecting its existence or non-existence has
frequently been received, but with the exception of the follow-
ing this information is of doubtful value,—
