Patents, Designs, and Trade-marks Act, 1911.—Application for Restoration of Lapsed Patent under Section 22.

NOTICE is hereby given that Alfred Launcelot James Tait, of Crawford Street, Dunedin, New Zealand, has made application for the restoration of the patent granted to him for an invention for “A method or process of and improved apparatus for treating and dressing flax and other fibres,” numbered 18601, and bearing date the 17th October, 1904, which expired on the 17th October, 1908, owing to the non-payment of the prescribed renewal fee.

Any person may, on or before the 9th June, 1914, give notice at the Patent Office of opposition to the restoration.

Such notice must be in duplicate, in the prescribed form, set forth the particular grounds of objection, and be accompanied by a stamp for the fee of 10s.

Notice of Examinations for the Public Service.

PUBLIC SERVICE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION.

UNDER schedule and regulations as amended under date the 3rd April, 1914 (Supplement to the New Zealand Gazette, dated the 8th April, 1914).

PUBLIC SERVICE SENIOR EXAMINATION.

As heretofore prescribed for the Civil Service Senior Examination.

Notice is hereby given of the intention to hold Public Service examinations as follows, viz.: The Public Service Entrance Examination (formerly known as the Civil Service Junior Examination) and the Public Service Senior Examination (formerly known as the Civil Service Senior Examination) on or about the dates named below,—

Public Service Entrance Examination: On or about 17th November, 1914, and following days.

Public Service Senior Examination: On or about 5th January, 1915, and following days.

No entrance fee (other than late fee) will be payable by candidates for the Public Service Entrance Examination. Candidates for the Public Service Senior Examination will also be admitted without fee if (a) they are employed in Departments of the Public Service coming under the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1912; or (b) if they have passed the Public Service Entrance Examination of November, 1913, and have not declined appointment; or (c) if they have entered and sat for the Public Service Entrance Examination of November, 1914. In all other cases a fee of £1 will be required as entrance fee for the examination.

Entries for the Public Service Entrance Examination and the Public Service Senior Examination must be addressed “The Inspector-General of Schools, Wellington,” and be sent so as to reach his office on or before the 8th September, 1914, and 15th October, 1914, respectively.

All entries must be made on the proper forms, which may be obtained at any time after the 1st July from the office of the Public Service Commissioner, or of the Education Department, or of any Education Board.

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW ZEALAND,
WELLINGTON DISTRICT.

In the matter of the Public Trust Office Act, 1908; and in the matter of the estate of William John Hebdon, late of Dunedin, in the Provincial District of Otago, Manager, now of parts unknown.

PURSUANT to section 89 of the above-mentioned Act, the Public Trustee hereby gives notice that, under an order made on the 22nd April, 1914, by His Honour Mr. Justice Hosking, he intends to take possession of the property of the above-named John Hebdon, and to exercise in connection therewith the powers conferred by Part III of the said Act.

Elementary Kindergarten Certificates.

THE following program of examination for Elementary Kindergarten Certificates proposed to be granted under the authority of the Minister of Education to student-teachers of kindergarten schools who desire to obtain a diploma in elementary kindergarten work, and who fulfil the required conditions, is hereby published for general information.

ELEMENTARY KINDERGARTEN CERTIFICATE.

  1. CANDIDATES before admission to examination for this certificate—

(a.) Must have passed the Intermediate Examination or its equivalent, or have gained an Intermediate Certificate; and

(b.) Must have completed two years of service as student-teacher or assistant in a kindergarten school under one or other of the recognized kindergarten associations of the Dominion, and in connexion therewith with or with a training college have satisfactorily completed an approved course of two years’ training and instruction in kindergarten principles and practice, and such allied subjects as fall within the scope of the certificate, or must have elsewhere completed a course of service and training recognized by the Education Department as equivalent thereto.

  1. The examination will be in the following subjects:—

(1.) Knowledge of Child Nature (including the elements of Child Hygiene and Psychology).

(2.) Nature Knowledge.

(3.) Kindergarten Principles.

(4.) Kindergarten Practice.

(5.) Class Teaching.

(6.) Educational Handwork.

(7.) Blackboard Drawing.

(8.) Singing.

PROGRAM.

  1. Knowledge of Child Nature.—The bodily functions of the child and his natural activities; conditions of healthy growth and development, with special reference to food, sleep, warmth, cleanliness, fresh air, and exercise. School conditions affecting the child’s physical well-being—ventilation, heating, sanitation, hours of work, exercise, play, rest, &c. The recognition of marked defects in a child’s general development. Symptoms of defective conditions in sense organs, good and bad postures during ordinary work, meaning and signs of fatigue.

Meaning and importance of play in general, of imitation, curiosity, imagination, &c. The means of developing ideas and utilizing interests, and the necessity for encouraging a variety of modes of expression. Early moral training; the development of instincts into valuable habits; the presentation of ideals within the grasp of the child; the gradual development of self-consciousness and self-control. Right use of authority.
