HIS Excellency the Governor has, in pursuance of section 48 (a) of the Land Act, 1908, approved of meetings of the Taranaki Land Board being held at 10 o’clock a.m., at the District Lands and Survey Office, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, 28th January, 25th February, 25th March, 22nd April, 27th May, 24th June, 22nd July, 26th August, 23rd September, 28th October, 25th November, and 16th December during the year 1914.

VICTORIA.
Flashing Light, No. 10 Buoy, South Channel.
REFERRING to Notice to Mariners No. 156, dated 22nd October, 1913, mariners are hereby informed that the double-flashing light at No. 10 Buoy, South Channel, has been adjusted, and now shows its proper double-flashing characteristics.

Notice to Mariners No. 9 of 1914.
AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—LUCAS CREEK.—REMOVAL OF ROCKS AND ERECTION OF BEACONS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 20th January, 1914.
THE Auckland Harbour Board has notified that several patches of rock have been removed from Lucas Creek as far as the lower Albany Wharf, and beacons have been erected where such work has taken place.
There are now five beacons in this channel—three (painted red) on the eastern side and two (painted black) on the western side.

Notice to Mariners No. 10 of 1914.
WAIRAU HARBOUR.—NIGHT SIGNALS FOR VESSELS TAKING THE BAR.

Wellington, 19th January, 1914.
THE Wairau Harbour Board has notified that on and after Thursday, 29th January, 1914, the following night signals for vessels taking the Wairau Bar will be exhibited as occasion requires:—
Flare at signal-station: Bar not to be taken inwards or outwards.
Red light showing up the river from the Lower Beacons: Bar can be taken outwards.
If no red light is shown, vessels are not to pass the northern end of the Boulder Bank, but must await instructions.

Applications invited for the Position of Vine and Wine Instructor, Department of Agriculture.

APPLICATIONS will be received up till noon on the 20th February, 1914, for the position of Vine and Wine Instructor, Department of Agriculture.

Applications must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace a statement of education and experience, particulars of age, &c.

Applicants must not be more than forty years of age.

Applicants must have—
(a.) A good knowledge of the growth of vines both in the vineyard and the glass-house.
(b.) A thorough knowledge of the diseases and pests of the vine, and their method of treatment.
(c.) A good experience in the manufacture and blending of wines, and also in regard to the appliances in connection therewith. -
Salary to commence, £170; maximum, £220. General Division.

APPLICATIONS will be received up till noon on the 12th February, 1914, for the position of Assistant Geologist, Mines Department, Wellington (two vacancies).

Applications must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace a statement of education and experience, particulars of age, &c.

It is desirable that applicants should be between the ages of twenty-three and thirty-six years, but consideration will be given to application from any person not included within these age-limits, provided he is not over forty years of age.

Applicants must submit evidence of a sound training in geology, especially in economic geology and the principles of geological surveying.
-
Knowledge of other branches of natural science, of any foreign language (more especially German), or of any branch of mining will be regarded as additional qualifications.
-
Applicants must possess a good general education and a strong physique.
-
The positions will be graded in Classes E and D, Professional Division; minimum, £260; maximum, £365, with a tent allowance of 3s. per day when in the field, and an instrument allowance of £12 per annum, the appointees to provide their own instruments. When travelling from place to place the ordinary scale allowance of 10s. per day will be paid.

The appointments will be subject to the provisions of the Public Service Act, 1912.

APPLICATIONS will be received by the undersigned up till noon on the 9th February, 1914, from officers of the Lands and Survey Department, for the following positions: (a) Chief Draughtsman in the District Office of the Lands and Survey Department at Wellington; and (b) Land Transfer Draughtsman in the District Office of the Lands and Survey Department at Dunedin.
Applications must be addressed to the Secretary to the Public Service Commissioner, Wellington, and must embrace a statement of education and experience, particulars of age, &c.
Applications must be made on forms obtainable from the Permanent Head of the Lands and Survey Department, or from any Commissioner of Crown Lands.
