There seems to be some doubt as to whether the island which has disappeared is the one above referred to or Honga Hapai Island, just southward of Falcon Island. Further information will be published when received.

NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

CAROLINE ISLANDS.—NGARUANGI REEF.—CORRECTED POSITION.—The master of the steamship “Sumatra” reports that Ngaruangi Reef, Caroline Islands, North Pacific Ocean, is located about 7 miles eastward of its charted position in (approximately) latitude 8° 11′ N., longitude 134° 37′ E.

An extensive sandbank was observed on the southern side and four large rocks on the northern side of the reef.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

MOLOKAI.—KAUNAKAKAI RANGE FRONT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—About 20th October, 1913, the characteristic of Kaunakakai Range front light, Molokai Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be changed from flashing white every 1·5 seconds to flashing white every second—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 0·7 second.

OAHU.—HONOLULU HARBOUR.—LIGHT RE-ESTABLISHED.—LIGHTED BUOY WITHDRAWN.—Notice is given that on 15th September, 1913, channel light No. 5, Honolulu Harbour, Hawaiian Islands, was re-established, and the lighted buoy moored to mark the site was withdrawn.

The light is a fixed white light of 170 candle-power exhibited 15 ft. above the water from a black three-pile structure erected in 2½ fathoms of water.

JAVA.

NORTH COAST.—BATAVIA ROADSTEAD.—CHARACTERISTIC OF LIGHT ON LIGHT-BUOY CHANGED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the characteristic of the light on the light-buoy marking the north-eastern edge of Van Dorth Reef, Batavia Road, north coast of Java, in (approximately) latitude 6° 4′ 6″ S., longitude 106° 52′ 36″ E., has been changed to fixed white.

BUOY REPLACED BY LIGHT-BUOY.—Notice is given that the red can buoy recently established 1,000 yards 60° from Tanjong Periuk eastern harbour light, Batavia Roadstead, north coast of Java, has been replaced by a light-buoy exhibiting a fixed white light.

BRAZIL.

EAST COAST.—BELMONTE LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC REPORTED CHANGED.—Capt. George Idles, of the British steamer “Herminius,” reports under date of 13th August, 1913, that Belmonte light, east coast of Brazil, was observed to show a flashing light having 1 group of 3 flashes, followed by 1 red flash every 31 seconds—thus, white 4 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds; white 4 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds; white 4 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds; red 3 seconds, eclipsed 4 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 15° 51′ 15″ S., long. 38° 54′ 30″ W.

CHINA SEA.

SINGAPORE STRAIT.—KEPPEL HARBOUR.—ROCK REPORTED.—The commanding officer of H.B.M. surveying vessel “Merlin” reports a flat coral rock about 40 yards in extent, with a least depth of 3½ fathoms over it, 130 yards 262° from the north-western beacon on Tembaga Rocks, Keppel Harbour, Singapore Strait.

Approximate position of beacon: Latitude 1° 15′ 53″ N., longitude 103° 50′ 28″ E.

San Diego Bay.—Alterations in Lighting.

(1.) NEW LEADING-LIGHTS ESTABLISHED.—(a.) Front light—Position: On western end of North Coronado Beach Island. Lat. 32° 41½′ N., long. 117° 13¾′ W. Character: A flashing white light every second, showing thus, flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 0·7 sec. Elevation: 17 ft. Power: 200 candles. Structure: Red triangular beacon, with triangular topmark painted white with a black vertical stripe. (b.) Rear light—Position: At a distance of 1,740 yards, 359° (N. 15° W. mag.) from the front light. Character: An occulting white light every two seconds, showing thus, light 1 sec., eclipse 1 sec. Elevation: 33 ft. Power: 200 candles. Structure: Similar to that of the front leading-light.

Remarks.—The lights are unwatched. The former leading-beacons have been removed.

(2.) ALTERATION IN CHARACTER OF BEACON-LIGHT NO. 5.—Position: On the north side of channel, as now shown on the chart. Alteration: The fixed white light has been replaced by an occulting white light every ten seconds, showing thus, light 5 secs., eclipse 5 secs. Remarks: The new light has an elevation of 27 ft., and is shown from a black triangular beacon.

Variation.—14° E.

CANADA.—BRITISH COLUMBIA.

OBSERVATORY INLET.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Position: On east extreme of Aisikew Island, on the site of the beacon which has been removed. Lat. 55° 22′ 40″ N., long. 129° 46′ 15″ W., on Chart No. 2458. Abridged description: Lt. occ., 40 ft., vis. 8 m. (U). Details: Character, an occulting white light; elevation, 40 ft.; visibility, 8 miles; structure, white cylindrical tank surmounted by a pyramidal framework supporting the lantern. Remarks: The light is unwatched.

RIO DE LA PLATA.—INDIO POINT CHANNEL.

(1.) RECALADA LIGHT-VESSEL.—ALTERATION IN POSITION.—New position: At a distance of about 3½ miles eastward from former position. Lat. 35° 10′ 45″ S., long. 56° 21′ 40″ W., on Chart No. 1749. Description: As given in the List of Lights.

(2.) PILOT-HULK.—ALTERATION IN POSITION.—Former Notice: No. 1307 of 1912. New position: At a distance of about 2 miles south-eastward from former position. Lat. 35° 11′ 22″ S., long. 56° 22′ 50″ W., on Chart No. 1749. Description: A three-masted schooner, as described in the notice quoted above.

CHINA, KWANG TUNG PENINSULA.—WAN.

SOUTH SAN SHAN TAU.—OCCASIONAL FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.—Position: At lighthouse. Lat. 38° 52′ N., long. 121° 49½′ E. Description: A gun fired twice, with an interval of three minutes between the reports, in answer to a vessel’s fog-signals. Should the vessel’s signals continue to be heard the firing will be repeated as above after an interval of ten minutes.

NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN.

DERELICT REPORTED.—Position: Lat. 51° 3′ N., long. 16° 42′ W. Date sighted: On the 6th October, 1913. Description: Derelict. Remarks: This derelict is dangerous to navigation, as it lies in the track of shipping.

RED SEA.—PERIM ISLAND.

OBSTRUCTION POINT.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—Former Notice: No. 1306 of 1913. Position: Lat. 12° 39¾′ N., long. 43° 26¼′ E. Description: A group occulting white light. Remarks: Mariners are advised, in future, to pass on the western side of Perim Island, as the Obstruction Point light is permanently discontinued. Note: “Old Lt. Tr.” has been placed against the lighthouse on the charts; and “Disused Lt. Ho.” against the view on Chart No. 2592.

MALACCA STRAIT.—PENANG HARBOUR.

FORT CORNWALLIS.—INTENDED NEW LIGHT.—Date of establishment: Probably during December, 1913. Position: On N.E. bastion of fort. Lat. 5° 24¼′ N., long. 100° 20¾′ E. Character: A group occulting white light with red sector, showing a group of two eclipses every thirty seconds—thus, light 21 secs., eclipse 3 secs.; light 3 secs., eclipse 3 secs. Elevation: 87 ft. Visibility: 15 miles. Sectors: Red from 139° (S. 42° E. mag.) to 152° (S. 29° E. mag.); white thence, south, &c., to 49° (N. 42° E. mag.); obscured thence to 103° (S. 78° E. mag.); faint white thence to 139° (S. 42° E. mag.). Power: 9,000 candles. Order: 3rd. Structure: White iron pile tower, 70 ft. in height. Remarks: On the exhibition of the new light, the existing revolving white light will be discontinued. Further notice will be given. Variation: 1° E.
