PORT NICHOLSON.—PROPOSED NEW LEADING-LIGHTS.

NOTICE is hereby given that the following mentioned new leading-lights have been proposed and authorized for guidance in entering Port Nicholson Harbour, viz.: A beacon to be erected on western edge of shoal off Ward Island, to show an occulting white light from 22° (N. 5° E. magnetic) round by north to 354½° (N. 22° W. magnetic), red from 354½° (N. 22° W. magnetic) round by west and south to 120° (S. 77° E. magnetic), obscured from 120° (S. 77° E. magnetic) to 22° (N. 5° E. magnetic). A lighted buoy or beacon 14 cables to southward of beacon to show a white occulting light visible all round the horizon. These lights in line 16° (north magnetic) lead up the centre of the harbour entrance. It is expected that these lights will be exhibited in about nine months’ time.

NOTICE is hereby given that in the problem under heading “Below Pole Ex-Meridian and Position-line” on page 156 of Tables for Azimuth and Great-circle Sailing, and on page 135 of the “New Zealand Nautical Almanac” for 1914, fourteenth line from top, star’s hour angle should read 13 h. 15 m. 2 s. E. in lieu of W., and on fifteenth line Supt. 1 h. 15 m. 2 s. W. in lieu of E., or the fourteenth line would be more correctly stated as star’s hour angle 10 h. 44 m. 58 s. W.

NORTH AMERICA.—WEST COAST, ETC.

SUNKEN WRECKS AND FLOATING DERELICTS.—SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—On 25th July the schr. “J. H. Lunsman,” part awash at H.W., in 37° 48¾′ N., 122° 25½′ W., in fairway off Black Pt., 8·4 cables 186° (S. 12° E. mag.) from Alcatraz Isl. Lt.-h., and 282° (S. 84° W. mag.) from the outer end of North Pt. jetty, marked by 2 lighters, each exh. a white lt. over 2 red lts., vert., est. close to wrk. on its ern. and wrn. sides respectively. Oct.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO, ETC.

SURABAYA ROADS.—No. 7 white conical buoy, in 7° 10′ 54″ S., 112° 44′ 6″ E., has been replaced by a lt.-buoy, white, exh. an occ. white lt. Oct.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—VICTORIA HARBOUR.—SHOAL POINT LIGHT TO BE MOVED.—On 1st November, 1913, the light-beacon maintained off Shoal Point, Victoria Harbour, British Columbia, will be moved, without further notice, 300 ft. 245° and re-established about 300 ft. from the shore to mark the edge of the shoal making off from Shoal Point.

The beacon will consist of a cluster of five piles. The light will be a fixed red incandescent electric light suspended from an arm at the top of the centre pile, which is 5 ft. higher than the others.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 1775: Latitude 48° 25′ 24″ N., longitude 123° 22′ 53″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—FRASER RIVER LIGHT-VESSEL.—SUBMARINE BELL ESTABLISHED.—About 15th October, 1913, and without further notice, a submarine bell which will sound the number “22” every 16 seconds—thus, stroke, silent interval 2 seconds; stroke, silent interval 4 seconds; stroke, silent interval 2 seconds; stroke, silent interval 8 seconds—will be established on the Fraser River Light-vessel, Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.

Approx. position: Lat. 49° 6′ 17″ N., long. 123° 18′ 15″ W.

DIXON ENTRANCE.—QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS.—LANGARA (NORTH) ISLAND.—LIGHT AND FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the light and fog-signal which have been under construction on Langara (North) Island, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, would be placed in operation about 1st October, 1913, without further notice.

The light is a 1st-order, dioptric, flashing white, incandescent, petroleum-vapour light of 450,000 candle-power, showing 1 flash every 5 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 4·7 seconds—and is visible 19 miles over an arc of 210° from 55° to 265°. The light is exhibited 160 ft. above high water from a white, hexagonal, reinforced-concrete tower with six flying buttresses surmounted by a red circular metal lantern erected on Langara Point, the north-west point of the island, on land 112 ft. above high water and 200 ft. back from the water’s edge.

The height of the tower from base to vane is 57 ft.

The fog-alarm is a compressed-air diaphone which sounds 1 blast of 5 seconds’ duration every minute—thus, blast 5 seconds, silent interval 55 seconds. The fog-alarm building is a white, square, wooden building with a gable roof, standing in front of the lighthouse. The horn is elevated 100 ft. above high water and points 329°.

A white, rectangular, wooden, double dwelling, with a hip roof, stands 400 ft. eastward of the lighthouse.

Approx. position: Lat. 54° 15′ 15″ N., long. 133° 3′ 27″ W.

SUMATRA.

EAST COAST.—DURIAN STRAIT.—PELANGKAT ISLAND.—INTENDED LIGHT.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that a flashing white light, visible 10 miles, will be established on the reef on the southern side of Pelangkat Island, Durian Strait, east coast of Sumatra.

Approx. position: Lat. 0° 44′ 36″ N., long. 103° 35′ 12″ E.

BANKA ISLAND.—MUNTOK.—BUOY MOVED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the white buoy with a ball topmark formerly marking Karang-Hadje Reef, Muntok approach, Banka Island, has been moved and re-established on the northern side of the 2-fathom reef in (approximately) latitude 2° 5′ 5″ S., longitude 105° 6′ 40″ E.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

SOLOMON ISLANDS.—GOWER ISLAND.—BANK REPORTED SOUTH-EASTWARD.—FURTHER INFORMATION.—Capt. J. R. Handley, master of the British steamer “Induna,” reports that the bank south-eastward of Gower (Inattendue) Island, Solomon Islands, in (approximately) latitude 8° 4′ S., longitude 160° 42′ E., is located on the following bearings—

Gower Island, centre of southern end . . 317° 30′
Cape Astrolabe . . . . 215° 30′

Captain Handley obtained a sounding of 17 fathoms, coral bottom, but estimated the least depth on the bank to be about 7 fathoms. At the time there was considerable easterly swell, but no break visible.

TONGA ISLANDS.—NIUAFU (GOOD HOPE) ISLAND REPORTED DISAPPEARED.—Capt. J. H. Trask, of the steamer “Sonoma,” reports under date of 12th September, 1913, having been informed by Captain Allen, of the schooner “Dawn,” that Niuafu (Good Hope) Island, Tonga Islands, South Pacific Ocean, had disappeared.

Approx. position: Lat. 15° 35′ S., long. 175° 42′ W.

NOTE.—Just prior to the discovery that Niuafu (Good Hope) Island and Falcon Island had disappeared, the instruments at the Sydney Naval Station indicated that several violent earthquake shocks had occurred about 2,000 miles north-eastward.
