CHINESE.—Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on 31st December, 1912, was estimated to be 2,520, of whom 102 were females.

REMARKS.—Excluding Maoris, the population increased by 27,139, or at the rate of 2·65 per cent., during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 18,212, and excess of arrivals over departures 8,927.

The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1912 was 26·48 per 1,000 of mean population, and the death-rate 8·95, as against 25·97 and 9·39 respectively in 1911.

The deaths in 1912 (9,295) were less than the number registered in 1911 (9,534) by 239, and the rate per 1,000 fell from 9·39 to 8·95.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnized in 1912 is estimated at 9,250, giving a rate of 8·90 per 1,000 of the mean population, against 8,825 and 8·70, the actual number and rate in 1911.
