Notice to Mariners No. 23 of 1913.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Port Adelaide, South Australia, are published for general information.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Port Adelaide and Port Pirie Rivers.

Masters of vessels, pilots, and others navigating the Port Adelaide River or the Port Pirie River are hereby cautioned that when dredgers are working at or near a fairway they are to look out specially for the breast chains, go at a moderate speed, and not let go an anchor so as to foul these chains.

The dredgers’ anchors are placed close to the opposite bank, so that a vessel cannot touch them unless they get aground.

True Bearings.

Masters of vessels, pilots, and others are hereby informed that in future all BEARINGS given in “Notices to Mariners” will be TRUE, not magnetic, to be reckoned clockwise or to the right from N. 0° to 360°.

River Murray, Lake Alexandrina.—Point Sturt and Point Pomanda.

Masters and officers of vessels and others navigating the River Murray and Lakes are hereby informed that on and after the night of the 27th January, 1913, white lights will be exhibited from Point Sturt and Point Pomanda.

The lights will be of the “A.G.A.” variety, and will be exhibited from iron posts 9 ft. high. These posts will be surrounded by a galvanized-iron fence, painted white.

The focal plane of the light on Point Sturt will be 200 ft., and that on Point Pomanda 55 ft., above mean river-level.

The lights will flash once in every three seconds, and will be visible in clear weather all round the horizon for a distance of about eight miles.

BRAZIL.

RIO DE JANEIRO HARBOUR.—PASSAGEM ROCKS LIGHT.—COLOUR CHANGED.—The Brazilian Government has given notice that the colour of Passagem Rocks light, Rio de Janeiro Harbour, Brazil, has been changed from white to red.
Approx. position: Lat. 22° 50′ 30″ S., long. 43° 10′ W.

IL MANOEL ISLET LIGHT-BUOY.—COLOUR OF LIGHT CHANGED.—The Brazilian Government has given notice that the colour of the light exhibited from the light-buoy moored eastward of Il Manoel Islet, Rio de Janeiro Harbour, Brazil, has been changed from red to white.
Approx. position: Lat. 22° 48′ 30″ S., long. 43° 9′ 10″ W.

SUMATRA.

EAST COAST.—RHO STRAIT.—GREAT KARAS ISLAND.—REEF NORTH-WESTWARD.—The commander of the Netherlands man-of-war “Fret” reports a reef, drying at low water, about 440 yards long in a north-east-south-west direction and 44 yards wide off the north-western shore of Great Karas Island, Rhio Strait, east coast of Sumatra, in (approximately) latitude 0° 46′ N., longitude 104° 18′ 30″ E.

KUNDUR ISLAND.—BUOY CHANGED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the white conical buoy recently established to mark the shoal westward of Kundur Island, east coast of Sumatra, has been replaced by a black can buoy moored northward of the shoal in (approximately) latitude 0° 53′ 40″ N., longitude 103° 14′ 26″ E.

RHIO STRAIT.—DECREASED DEPTH ON SHOAL.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the shoal southward of Pulo Awi, Rhio Strait, east coast of Sumatra, shown on the charts with the least depth of 2½ fathoms over it dries at low water.

BANKA ISLAND.—MUNTOK.—BUOY TO BE MOVED.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the white buoy with a ball topmark marking Karang-Hadje Reef, Muntok approach, Banka Island, will be moved and re-established on the northern side of the 2-fathom reef in (approximately) latitude 2° 5′ 5″ S., longitude 105° 6′ 40″ E.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—FRASER RIVER LIGHT-VESSEL REPLACED ON STATION.—GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY WITHDRAWN.—Information has been received from the agent of the Department of Marine and Fisheries, Victoria, British Columbia, that about 3rd April, 1913, the gas and whistle buoy showing an intermittent red light, temporarily marking the station of Fraser River Light-vessel, off the sandheads at the mouth of the Fraser River, would be withdrawn and a two-masted light-vessel, painted red, established in its place. The light-vessel will show 2 fixed white lights, one from each masthead at the same height, and during thick weather will sound a diaphone fog-alarm giving 1 blast of 3 seconds’ duration every 30 seconds.
Approx. position: Lat. 49° 6′ 17″ N., long. 123° 18′ 15″ W.

WASHINGTON.

ROSARIO STRAIT.—CYPRESS ISLAND.—ROCK TO WESTWARD.—The master of the British steamer “Lord Darby” reports that on 4th April, 1913, at 3 a.m., his vessel struck an obstruction (presumably a rock) estimated to be 12 ft. to 15 ft. below the surface (5 ft. to 8 ft. at mean lower low water), about 300 yards 270° from the southern end of Strawberry Island, west coast of Cypress Island, Rosario Strait, Washington.

Pending an examination, a depth of 5 ft., marked P.D., has been placed on the charts in the assigned position.
Approx. position: Lat. 48° 33′ 40″ N., long. 122° 44′ 20″ W.

CHINA SEA.

BANKA ISLAND.—NORTH-EAST COAST.—CHANGE IN BUOYAGE.—The Netherlands Government has given notice that the white conical buoy marking Malan Tate (Folke Reef), north-east coast of Banka Island, has been moved and re-established in the position of Karang Merah (Sullivan Reef) light-buoy, which has been withdrawn.
Approx. position: Lat. 2° 1′ 30″ S., long. 106° 16′ 42″ E.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—SAN PABLO BAY.—GAS AND BELL BUOY REPLACED ON STATION.—GAS-BUOY WITHDRAWN.—Notice is given that lower mid-channel gas and bell buoy, painted in perpendicular stripes, has been replaced on its station in San Pablo Bay, California, and the temporary gas-buoy withdrawn.

CHILE.

MAGELLAN STRAIT.—FIRST NARROWS.—MENDEZ POINT LIGHT.—FURTHER INFORMATION.—The Chilean Government has given notice that the light recently established on Mendez Point, First Narrows, Magellan Strait, is an unwatched flashing white light showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 6 seconds —thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 0·9 second; flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 4·5 seconds.

The light is shown 93 ft. above the sea from a lantern with a white-and-red horizontally striped roof, surmounting a white cylindrical iron tower 7½ ft. high, enclosed by a wooden fence 6½ ft. high, in the form of a square, painted white and red in horizontal bands.

The light is visible 13 miles over an arc of 194° from 240° to 46°.
Approx. position: Lat. 52° 32′ 15″ S., long. 69° 34′ 40″ W.

DIRECTION HILL LIGHT.—INTENDED CHANGE IN CHARACTERISTIC.—The Chilean Government has given notice that the characteristic of Direction Hill light, Magellan Strait, will be changed from flashing white every 3 seconds to flashing white every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 9 seconds.
