THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

[No. 43

The light is exhibited, 73 ft. above the water, from a gray, cylindrical, concrete tower. The illuminant is incandescent oil vapour.

On the same date a first-class compressed-air fog-siren, which sounds 3 blasts every minute—thus, blast 2 seconds, silent interval 16 seconds; blast 2 seconds, silent interval 16 seconds; blast 4 seconds, silent interval 20 seconds—was established at the station.

Approx. position: Lat. 33° 42′ 31″ N., long. 118° 15′ 3″ W.

SAN PEDRO HARBOUR.—DEADMAN’S ISLAND BREAKWATER LIGHT DESTROYED.—On 24th February, 1913, Deadman’s Island Breakwater light, San Pedro Harbour, California, was destroyed. The structure supporting this light will be rebuilt and the light re-exhibited as soon as practicable.

Approx. position: Lat. 33° 43′ 28″ N., long. 118° 16′ 10″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY APPROACH.—FARALLON LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL CHANGED.—On 1st March, 1913, the steam fog-siren at Farallon Light-station, San Francisco Bay approach, California, was replaced by a first-class compressed-air siren which sounds 1 blast every 20 seconds—thus blast 4 seconds, silent interval 16 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 41′ 58″ N., long. 123° 0′ 4″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY.—BUOY ESTABLISHED.—A red spar buoy has been temporarily established, in 64 ft of water, at the angle in the pier-head line off the foot of Bryant Street, San Francisco, and on the following bearings—

Goat Island Lighthouse, 46°.

Mission Rock, left tangent, 172° 30′.

Alcatraz Lighthouse, 320° 15′.

This buoy marks the outer line of the submerged moorings used in connection with the construction work along the water front at that point and should be given a safe berth by passing vessels.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE.—SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL REPLACED ON STATION.—RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.—On 15th March, 1913, San Francisco Light-vessel No. 70 was replaced on her station off the bar at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, California, and Relief Light-vessel No. 76 temporarily marking the station was withdrawn.

No change has been made in the characteristic of the light or fog-signal, or in the general appearance of Light-vessel No. 70.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 45′ 3″ N., long. 122° 41′ 30″ W.

SAN DIEGO BAY.—BALLAST POINT LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—INTENSITY INCREASED.—On 15th January, 1913, the characteristic of Ballast Point light, San Diego Bay, California, was changed from fixed white to flashing white every 3 seconds—thus, flash 0·3 second, eclipsed 2·7 seconds. The power of the light was also increased to about 530 candles by changing the illuminant from oil to acetylene gas.

Approx. position: Lat. 32° 41′ 11″ N., long. 117° 13′ 58″ W.

BEACON DESTROYED.—Information has been received that San Diego Bay beacon 7, San Diego Harbour, California, has been destroyed.

This beacon will be rebuilt as soon as practicable.

CORTEZ BANK.—BANK REPORTED SOUTHWARD OF.—Position: Lat. 31° 59′ N., long. 119° 5′ W. Details: Heavy breakers and overfalls were observed from the s.s. “Pectan” in the position given above. A depth of 50 fathoms was obtained at a distance of about 2 miles westward from the breakers, and another cast of 60 fathoms at a distance of about 10 miles 141° (S. 52° E. mag.) from the position of the first sounding. Note: A shoal marked “Breakers reported (1912)” and “Position approximate” has been placed on the charts. Variation: 13° E.

BAY OF BENGAL.

RANGOON RIVER.—SPIT LIGHT-VESSEL REPLACED ON STATION.—RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.—The deputy conservator of the Port of Rangoon has given notice that on 11th December, 1912, the Spit light-vessel was replaced on her station at the entrance to the Rangoon River, Bay of Bengal, and the relief light-vessel was withdrawn.

Approx. position: Lat. 16° 27′ N., long. 96° 22′ 15″ E.

BURMA.—BASSEIN RIVER APPROACH.—DIAMOND ISLAND.—ALTERATION IN VISIBILITY OF LIGHT.—LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.—1. Alteration in visibility of light:—Former notice: No. 632 of 1912. Position: Lat. 15° 51½′ N., long. 94° 16¾′ E. Details: The light has been replaced by a fixed white lantern light, having a visibility of only 6 miles.

  1. Light-buoy established:—Position: At a distance of one mile, 19° (N. 19° E. mag.), from Diamond Island light, in the position formerly occupied by the black and white horizontally striped buoy which it replaces. Description: Light-buoy, painted in black and white horizontal stripes, exhibiting a flashing white light every six seconds—thus, flash 2 secs., eclipse 4 secs. Variation: NIL.

URUGUAY.

PLATA RIVER.—COLONIA ROAD.—POSITION OF LIGHT-BUOY.—Information has been received that the black light-buoy, showing a flashing white light, established southward of Gabriel Island, Colonia Road, Plata River, is located 4,300 yards 259° 30′ from Colonia light.

LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 42 (3399) of 1912, further information has been received that the light on Punta Negra, Plata River, Uruguay, would be exhibited on 1st January, 1913.

This light is an unwatched flashing white light, and shows 1 group of 3 flashes every 9 seconds, visible 12 miles. It is exhibited from a white iron tower located 433 ft. from the extremity of the rocks off the point.

Approx. position: Lat. 34° 54′ S., long. 55° 15′ 30″ W.

COLONIA.—PROVISIONAL LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that a provisional flashing red light, showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 10 seconds, elevated 110 ft. above the sea, and visible 5 miles, has been established at Colonia, Plata River, Uruguay.

MONTEVIDEO.—COLOUR OF LIGHTS ON LIGHT-BUOYS.—Notice is given that the colour of the flashing lights on the light-buoys located 650 yards 356° and 1,280 yards 35° from the light on the head of the East Breakwater, Montevideo, is white and not red, as previously stated.

MONTEVIDEO HARBOUR BUOYAGE.—CORRECTION TO FORMER NOTICE.—Former Notice: No. 1243 of 1912. Position: East Breakwater Lighthouse, lat. 34° 55′ S., long. 56° 13¼′ W. Correction: The light-buoys situated respectively 3¼ cables 356° (N. 8° W. mag.), and 6·4 cables, 35° (N. 37° E. mag.) from East Breakwater Lighthouse, each exhibit a flashing white light, and not a flashing red light as stated in the notice quoted above. Note: The chart plates are correct as regards the last-mentioned buoy. Variation: 4° E.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

OAHU.—HONOLULU HARBOUR.—LIGHT DESTROYED.—LIGHTED BUOY ESTABLISHED.—On 30th December, 1912, channel light No. 5, Honolulu Harbour, Hawaiian Islands, was carried away.

A fixed white light will be exhibited from a second-class can buoy, moored to mark the site, pending the re-establishment of the light.

HAWAII.—WEST COAST.—KAILUA BAY.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—FURTHER INFORMATION.—Information has been received that the fixed white light formerly maintained by the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. on the low point of land on the north-western side of Kailua Bay, west coast of the Island of Hawaii, has been discontinued, but the fixed red light mentioned in the notice above referred to is still exhibited by the Bureau of Lighthouses.

Approx. position: Lat. 19° 38′ 40″ N., long. 156° 0′ 20″ W.

KAUAI ISLAND.—KILAUEA POINT.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.—CORRECTED POSITION.—Notice is given that the light to be established on Kilauea Point, northern shore of Kauai Island, Hawaiian Islands, will be located on the extremity of the point, on the bearings—

Kapuhi Point, 109°.

Kaweouni Point, 269°.

Approx. position: Lat. 22° 13′ 55″ N., long. 159° 24′ 30″ W.

OAHU.—PEARL HARBOUR.—CHANGES IN BUOYAGE.—On 15th January, 1913, the following changes were made in the buoyage of Pearl Harbour, Oahu, Hawaiian Islands:—

Fort Island Spit buoy 19, a second-class spar, was replaced by a second-class can, numbered 21, without other change.

Ford Island Spit buoy 21, a third-class spar, was replaced by a second-class can, numbered 23, without other change.

Peninsula Point Shoal buoy 17, a third-class spar, was replaced by a second-class spar, numbered 1, moored in 3½ fathoms of water.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

FIJI ISLANDS.—VITI LEVU ISLAND.—NASALAI REEF LIGHT-STATION.—NEW TOWER.—Information has been received that on 8th January, 1913, Nasalai Reef light, south-eastern extremity of Viti Levu Island, Fiji Islands, would be exhibited from a circular, reinforced-concrete tower, 58¾ ft. high and 10 ft. in diameter, painted white. The light is a 4th-order, dioptric, flashing white light, showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 30 seconds, exhibited 45 ft. above high water, and visible 12 miles over an arc of 194° between the bearings 223° 45′ and 57° 45′.

Approx. position: Lat. 18° 8′ 10″ S., long. 178° 42′ 20″ E.
