CHINA.

YANGTZE RIVER APPROACH.—SHAWESHAN LIGHT TO BE TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED.—PROVISIONAL LIGHTS.—The Chinese Government has given notice that about 31st January, 1913, Shaweshan light, Yangtze River approach, China, will be temporarily discontinued pending the installation of a new light, and that during the progress of the work the following provisional lights will be exhibited :—

A dioptric, 4th-order, revolving white light, showing 1 flash every 20 seconds—thus, light 15 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds—visible 21 miles, will be exhibited 227 ft. above the sea from a timber structure erected on the northern side and adjoining the lighthouse tower. This light will be obscured by the tower to the southward over an arc of about 40°.

This arc of obscuration will be illuminated by a 6th-order intermittent white light having 1 group of 3 eclipses every 30 seconds, visible 10 miles, located on the southern slope of the island.

CHINA SEA.

BILLITON ISLAND.—NORTH COAST.—SHOALS REPORTED.—The commander of the Netherlands surveying vessel “Sumbawa” reports the discovery of shoals off the north coast of Billiton Island, China Sea, in the following positions :—

A shoal, about 440 yards long in an east and west direction and from 165 to 220 yards wide, with a least depth of 2 fathoms over it, was found in (approximately) latitude 2° 28′ 53″ S., longitude 108° 9′ 5″ E. The 4½-fathom reef in (approximately) latitude 2° 29′ 28″ S., longitude 107° 50′ 13″ E., has a least depth of 1½ fathoms over it.

SINGAPORE MAIN STRAIT.—MIDDLE ISLAND.—SHOAL SOUTH-EASTWARD OF.—Position : At a distance of 13·9 cables, 127° (S. 54° E. mag.), from the south extreme of Middle Island, and 235° (S. 54° W. mag.) from the south extreme of St. John’s Island ; lat. 1° 11½′ N., long. 103° 49½′ E. Depth : 7 fathoms. Remarks : The shoal has not yet been examined, and less water may exist. Variation : 1° E.

SINGAPORE STRAIT.—MIDDLE ISLAND.—SHOAL SOUTH-EASTWARD.—The commanding officer of H.B.M. surveying vessel “Waterwitch” reports a shoal with a least depth of 7 fathoms over it south-eastward of Middle Island, Singapore Strait, on the bearings—

Middle Island, south extremity, 307°, distant 2,780 yards.
St. John’s Island, south extremity, 55°.

Note.—An examination of this shoal has not been made, and less water may exist.

COCHIN CHINA, SAIGON RIVER.—KUA TIBU ENTRANCE.—MIRADOR POINT.—NEW LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Position : At a distance of about 65 yards northward from the position of the former light, which has been discontinued ; lat. 10° 16′ N., long. 106° 46′ E. Abridged description : Lt. F. gn., 34 ft., vis. 7 m. Details : Character, a fixed green light ; elevation 34 ft. ; visibility, 7 miles ; structure, white framework, 34 ft. in height. Remarks : The column from which the former light was exhibited has been removed.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—FRASER RIVER LIGHT-VESSEL TEMPORARILY REPLACED BY GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY.—The Canadian Government has given notice that Fraser River Light-vessel, moored off the Sand Heads at the mouth of the Fraser River, British Columbia, has been withdrawn from her station to undergo extensive repairs, and the station has been marked by a combined gas and whistle buoy, painted red, showing an intermittent red light.

Further notice will be given when the repairs have been completed and the lightship replaced on her station.

FRASER RIVER MOUTH.—COLOUR OF LIGHTS CHANGED.—On 10th January, 1913, and without further notice, the colour of South Curve and North Dam lights, Fraser River mouth, British Columbia, will be changed from white to red.

Heretofore these lights have been fixed white from 1st October to 30th June, and fixed red from 1st July to 30th September. It is assumed that hereafter they will show fixed red the year round.

VANCOUVER ISLAND.—DISCOVERY PASSAGE.—CAPE MUDGE LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL TO BE ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that the diaphone fog-signal which is being installed at Cape Mudge Light-station, Discovery Passage, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, will be placed in operation about 1st March, 1913.

The new fog-horn will be installed in a white building, erected close to the lighthouse, and during thick weather will sound 1 blast every 30 seconds—thus, blast 2 seconds, silent interval 28 seconds.

The resonator of the new fog-signal will point in a 145° direction towards the Strait of Georgia.

CHATHAM SOUND.—PRINCE RUPERT HARBOUR APPROACH.—HOLLAND ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—On 15th January, 1913, a permanent fixed white light was established in the new lighthouse recently erected on Holland Island, Prince Rupert Harbour, approach Chatham Sound, British Columbia.

The light is exhibited 45 ft. above high water, and should be visible 10 miles from all points of approach by water. The tower and dwelling are painted white, with roof and lantern red.

The fixed white provisional light and the unwatched intermittent white light exhibited from the beacon on Holland Island have been discontinued.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA.—BURRARD INLET.—VANCOUVER HARBOUR.—SUBMARINE TELEPHONE CABLE.—CAUTION.—A submarine telephone cable has recently been laid across Vancouver Harbour, British Columbia, from Vancouver to North Vancouver. The cable extends from a point on the wharf at Vancouver, opposite the foot of Seymour Street, about ⅔ mile 163° from Brockton Point Lighthouse, to a point on the shore at North Vancouver, at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, about 9,500 ft. 67° from Brockton Point Lighthouse.

From the wharf at Vancouver the cable is laid 1·3 miles in a 39° direction ; thence 0·1 mile 16°, thence 0·4 mile 45°, thence 200 ft. 32° to the landing point at North Vancouver.

Caution.—Mariners are warned not to anchor in the vicinity of this cable.

GALIANO ISLAND.—PORLIER PASS.—RACE POINT LIGHT-STATION.—FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.—A hand fog-horn, which will be used to answer signals from steamers in the vicinity of the station in thick weather, has been established at Race Point Light-station, Porlier Pass, Galiano Island, Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.

Approx. position : Lat. 49° 0′ 32″ N., long. 123° 35′ 5″ W.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS.—HOUSTON-STEWART CHANNEL.—CHANGE IN POSITION OF LIGHT POSTPONED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the light on Koya Point, eastern entrance of Houston-Stewart Channel, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, will not be moved to Danger Rocks until the spring of 1913.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 1584 : Latitude 52° 11′ 36″ N., longitude 130° 57′ 45″ W.

HOUSTON-STEWART CHANNEL.—LIGHT DISCONTINUED.—TOLMIE CHANNEL.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the light on Flat Rock, western entrance of Houston-Stewart Channel, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, has been discontinued and the beacon removed.

This lighted beacon has been re-established on Separation Point, Tolmie Channel, British Columbia, in (approximately) latitude 52° 41′ 20″ N., longitude 128° 34′ W.

The light is an unwatched, dioptric, intermittent white acetylene light, exhibited 31 ft. above high water from a beacon consisting of a cylindrical steel tank standing on a steel truss and surmounted by a pyramidal steel frame supporting the lantern, the whole painted white, and is visible 10 miles from all points of approach by water.

HECATE STRAIT.—SKIDEGATE INLET.—BUOY REPLACED BY GAS-BUOY.—The Canadian Government has given notice that the black can buoy heretofore moored 1·55 miles 130° from Dead-tree Point, Skidegate Inlet, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, will be replaced, without further notice, by
