Notice to Mariners No. 129 of 1912.

REPORTED ROCK OFF WAITARA ROADS.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 7th November, 1912.

THE Waitara Harbour Board have notified that a dangerous rock, with only about 5 fathoms of water over it, exists about 5½ miles to north-west of Waitara.

Owing to reports having been received of a shoal patch off the roadstead, the Harbourmaster and Pilot of the port went out in an oil-launch to endeavour to find the shoal.

The launch’s anchor was towed at slow speed, and in the position given by the following mentioned bearings the anchor struck heavily.

The position was fixed by bearings, but as no sextant angles were taken the position must only be considered as approximate. Unfortunately a rapidly increasing sea made further observations impossible, and the exact depth and extent of the patch has not yet been ascertained. A return to the spot will be made at the first favourable opportunity, when careful observations will be made of the extent of and depth of water over the rock.

The following true bearings mark the approximate position of the rock :—

White Bluff (Pareninihi), 81° (N. 65° E.) magnetic.
Waitara Flagstaff, 132½° (S. 63½° E.).
Mahanga (Sugar Loaf Ids.), 218° (S. 22° W.).
Mount Egmont, 189° (S. 7° E.).
