Notice to Mariners No. 102 of 1912.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 22nd August, 1912.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Marine Department, Brisbane, Queensland, are published for general information.

F. M. B. FISHER.

QUEENSLAND.

Moreton Bay.—New Bar Cutting, Brisbane River.

NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after 1st October, 1912, the dredged cutting giving entrance to the Brisbane River hitherto will be abandoned, and the new cutting will be open to use. This new cutting is on the same alignment as the cutting from the west beacon inwards past Luggage Point. Its bearing is S. 23 degrees W. magnetic. The new cutting has a bottom width of 400 ft. and a net depth of 24 ft. at low-water springs.

It will be marked by five red triangular beacons to starboard and five square black beacons to port when entering; the outermost beacons are on a depth of 9 ft. at low water, and all beacons are 150 ft. off the edge of the cutting. The marks to indicate the centre-line will be two lighthouses on Bulwer Island, transferred from Fisherman Islands. By night a white light will be shown from the back tower and a red light from the front or nearer tower, these lights being the same as those marking the present entrance cutting. In addition, the small floating white light now marking the outer end of the present cutting will be transferred to mark the outer end of the new cutting, and will be moored on the west side thereof in a depth of 24 ft. at low water, distant 450 ft. from the line of lights. It will bear N. 72 degrees E., distant 1½ miles from the pile lighthouse.

The main light and the tidal signals shown from the pile lighthouse will be continued as hitherto until the new pile lighthouse is erected, of which due notice will be given.

The small white light shown from the west beacon will be discontinued.

Directions.

By Day.—Vessels from seaward will steer for the pile lighthouse as hitherto until the floating lightboat is plainly visible, when a course is to be steered to pass 450 ft. to eastward of it, bringing the two lighthouses on Bulwer Island bearing S. 23 degrees W. in line ahead. Keep them so passing six red beacons to starboard, including the present west beacon, and five black beacons to port, after which continue on the same line until past Luggage Point and the floating lightboat is neared, when proceed as before.

By Night.—Vessels from seaward will steer for the pile light as hitherto until the small floating white light at the outer end of the cutting is visible, when steer to pass it on the starboard hand 450 ft. distant, and bring the red and white lights on Bulwer Island bearing S. 23 degrees W. in line ahead. Keep them so passing Luggage Point until the small floating light marking the turn into the Pelican Bank cutting is approached, when proceed as before.

The new pile light will bear N. 62½ degrees E., distant 13,800 ft. from the existing pile light, and will be 450 ft. to the eastward of the line of marks for the new cutting, in a depth of 30 ft. at L.W.S.

During erection wooden piles will be driven, from which at night two green lights vertical will be exhibited.

KAIPARA HARBOUR SIGNAL-STATION.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 28th August, 1912.

NOTICE is hereby given that, owing to the distance of the Kaipara Bar from the shore and the tortuous nature of the channels, the signalman cannot keep the vessel’s position in relation to the channel in sight when the light is not good.

A vessel should not take the bar unless a safe anchorage can be gained inside Pouto or South Head before dark, or the signals to take the bar are shown.
