Riding or travelling on a bicycle or other similar
vehicle on any footpath. -
Keeping or maintaining any pigsty within 2 chains of
any road or of any private or public dwelling or place of
business. -
Taking any engine, agricultural or other machine or
implement, or drawing or trailing any sledge, timber, or
other thing or material upon any road or footpath, bridge,
or culvert to the injury of such road, bridge, or culvert. -
Carting any nightsoil or other offensive matter on
any public road without the permission of the Council
in writing so to do. -
Allowing nightsoil or other offensive matter to be
spilt or otherwise cast upon any road, footpath, or public
place. -
Taking across any bridge or culvert in any public
road any engine, agricultural or other machine or imple-
ment, or any cart, wagon, dray, or other vehicle which,
whether unloaded (together with the load therein), shall
exceed 8 tons in weight, without the permission in writing
of the Council. -
Taking any engine, agricultural or other machine
or implement, or drawing or trailing any sledge, timber, or
other material or thing across any bridge in any public
road to the injury of such bridge. Any person committing
any breach of this by-law shall, in addition to the after-
mentioned penalty, pay to the Council such sum, by way
of compensation for damage, as the Justice adjudicating
upon the information shall on the hearing thereof order. -
Laying out or opening any road or footpath and
omitting to take such precautions for guarding against
injury to passengers along such road as may be necessary,
or as may be directed by the Council or County Ranger or
County Engineer. -
Making or leaving any hole, excavation, or danger-
ous formation in or near any road or public place without
fencing or enclosing the same, or without keeping a light
burning at or upon such hole, excavation, or formation
between sunset and sunrise. -
Removing any gravel, soil, or material from any
road without the permission of the Council in writing. -
Neglecting or omitting to keep in good repair any
rail, gate, fence, or cover, or about any area or cellar or
other place upon or adjoining any road, or keeping open
for more than a reasonable time for taking in or out any
articles any entrance to any area, cellar, or other place as
aforesaid. -
Leading, driving, or riding any horse or other
animal, or driving or wheeling any carriage, cart, or other
vehicle upon, along, or across any footway or any water-
channel or gutter by the side of any road, except at a
crossing. Any person committing any breach of this by-
law shall, in addition to the before-mentioned penalty, pay
to the Council such sum, by way of compensation for
damage, as the Justice adjudicating upon the information
shall on the hearing thereof order. -
Allowing any horses, sheep, pigs, goats, or cattle
belonging to him, or under his charge, to be at large in
any road or public place. -
Tethering or otherwise placing any horses, sheep,
goats, pigs, or cattle upon any road or public place for
the purpose of depasturing or grazing. -
Driving any horse or vehicle so as to cause any
injury to any person or property whatsoever by negligence,
or by driving on the wrong side of the road, or by being
away from any horse or cattle so as to be unable to have
the full control of them. -
Any person driving any vehicle whatsoever, or riding
any animal, or meeting any other vehicle or animal, shall
keep on the left or near side of the road, and when passing
or being passed by any vehicle or animal going in the same
direction shall pass or allow any person desirous of doing
so to pass, when practicable, on the right or off side of the
road ; except as in the next by-law provided. -
Any person leading any horse or other animal, or in
charge of any led horse or other animal, when passing any
person, animal, or vehicle, shall intervene his person
between the horse or other animal led by him and the
person, animal, or vehicle which he shall be passing.
The common seal of the Chairman, Councillors, and
Inhabitants of the Akitio County was set and affixed
hereto at a meeting and by order of the Akitio County

PUBLIC notice is hereby given that WILLIAM JAMES
Pocock, formerly of Waikino, Mill Hand, now
residing at Reimers Avenue, Kingsland, near Auckland,
has this day changed his name to and assumed the surname
of TAYLOR; and that he will henceforward be known as
WILLIAM JAMES TAYLOR and not as William James
Pocock.

LAKE COUNTY.
MOTOR BY-LAW (No. 13).
IN pursuance of the powers, provisions, and authorities
contained in the Counties Act, 1908, the Public
Works Act, 1908, and the Motor Regulation Act, 1908,
or any amendment thereof respectively, and of all other
enabling powers, provisions, and authorities contained in
any other Acts or otherwise vested in it, the Lake County
Council hereby makes, by way of special order, the follow-
ing by-law for Lake County, that is to say :—
- In this by-law “motor” shall have the meaning
assigned to the word “motor” by section 2 of the Motor
Regulation Act, 1908, and shall include a motor-car, a
motor-cycle, or any other similar vehicle propelled by
motor-power.
“Motor-car” means any motor having not less than
four wheels.
“Road” means any highway, road, street, thoroughfare
under the care, control, or management of the Lake
County Council, or any road within Lake County as to
which the Lake County Council has by law authority to
make this by-law, or as to which the same is capable of
operating ; and, unless repugnant to the context, includes a
bridge forming part of such road.
“Bridge” or “culvert” means any bridge or culvert
respectively under the care, control, or management of the
Lake County Council, or any bridge or culvert within
Lake County as to which the said Lake County Council
has by law authority to make this by-law, or as to which
the same is capable of operating.
“Vehicle” means and includes every coach, carriage,
omnibus, drag, cab, cart, dray, wagon, timber, carriage,
lorry, van, express-wagon, and any other conveyance what-
ever its construction, drawn by or harnessed to an animal
or animals.
“Disc” means a metal disc painted red on one side and
white on the other, 18 in. at least in diameter, and fixed
by authority of the Lake County Council in a conspicuous
position above the level and on the side of the road.
“The Council” means the Lake County Council.

No person shall drive or operate a motor, or cause or
permit the use of a motor, upon any of the several places
within Lake County under the care, control, or manage-
ment of the Lake County Council mentioned in the Sche-
dule hereto, the Lake County Council being satisfied that
the use of motors upon any of the said places would be
attended with risk of danger to the public. -
No person shall drive or operate, or attempt to drive
or operate, a motor on a road unless he is a person com-
petent to drive or operate the same, and competent to
control and direct its use and movement. -
No driver or person in charge of a motor while on a
road shall cause or permit or allow such motor to be
driven or operated, or to remain or stand, on a road or
bridge or culvert so as to obstruct or interfere with the
traffic thereon. -
No owner, bailee, or person in charge of a motor shall
permit any person to drive or operate, or attempt to
drive or operate, such motor on a road unless such last-
mentioned person is competent to drive or operate the
same. -
No person driving or in charge of a motor-car when
on a road shall quit such car without having taken due
precaution against its starting or being started in his
absence. -
No person driving or in charge of a motor-car when
on a road shall cause such motor-car to travel backward
for a greater distance or time than shall be requisite for
the purpose of safety. -
The person in charge of a motor on any road shall,
when within a reasonable distance from and before over-
taking any person in sight on foot, and when within a
reasonable distance from and before meeting or overtaking
any person in a vehicle or motor, or on horseback, or
leading or driving a horse or other animal in sight, give
