1912, the Chilean Government has given further notice that the red buoy marking the shoal south-eastward of Santa Magadalena Island, Magellan Strait, has been replaced by a light-buoy exhibiting a flashing white light every 10 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 9 seconds.

Approximate position on H.O. Chart No. 444: Latitude 52° 56′ S., longitude 70° 31′ 35″ W.

PUNTA ARENAS.—BUOY REPLACED BY LIGHT-BUOY.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 7 (457) of 1912, the Chilean Government has given further notice that the red buoy on the eastern side of the shoal extending from Sandy Point, Punta Arenas, Magellan Strait, has been replaced by a light-buoy exhibiting a flashing white light every 5 seconds—thus, flash ½ second, eclipsed 4½ seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 53° 9′ S., long. 70° 50′ W.

ARGENTINA.

CAPE WATCHMAN.—SHOAL TO SOUTHWARD.—The captain of the steamer “President Mitre” reports a shoal, over which the sea breaks at half tide, in (approximately) latitude 48° 48′ S., longitude 66° 18′ W.

HINDUSTAN.

WEST COAST. — BOMBAY HARBOUR. — URAN SHOAL. — INTENDED LIGHT.—Information dated 30th January, 1912, has been received that about 1st March, 1912, an intermittent white light every 15 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds—would be established on Uran Shoal, Bombay Harbour, west coast of Hindustan.

The light, which is of 230 candle-power, is shown 29 ft. above the sea from a red cylindrical beacon, and is visible 8 miles over an arc of 302° from 59° to 1°.

Approx. position: Lat. 18° 55′ 45″ N., long. 72° 54′ 15″ E.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.

VANCOUVER ISLAND. — SOUTH-WEST COAST. — QUATSINO SOUND. — ENTRANCE ISLAND LIGHT-STATION. — FOG-HORN ESTABLISHED.—A hand fog-horn, which will be used to answer signals from steamers in the vicinity of the station in thick weather, has been established at the light-station on the south-eastern end of Entrance Island, Quatsino Sound, south-west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Approx. position: Lat. 50° 26′ 23″ N., long. 128° 2′ 24″ W.

STRAIT OF GEORGIA. — FRASER RIVER SAND HEADS. — LIGHT-VESSEL AND GAS AND WHISTLE BUOY TO BE MOVED.—About 1st April, 1912, and without further notice, Fraser River light-vessel, now moored on the outer edge of the sand heads, and Fraser River gas and whistle buoy, now moored off the extreme western shoulder of Roberts Bank, Fraser River entrance, British Columbia, will be interchanged.

The light-vessel will be moored in the present position of the gas and whistle buoy, in (approximately) latitude 49° 5′ 20″ N., longitude 123° 18′ 50″ W., and the gas and whistle buoy will be moored in the present position of the light-vessel, in (approximately) latitude 49° 6′ 17″ N., longitude 123° 18′ 15″ W.

CHINA.

KWANGTUNG PENINSULA.—DARIEN KO (VICTORIA BAY).—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Information has been received that on 20th February, 1912, an unwatched fixed white electric light of 100 candle-power, visible 8 miles over the whole horizon, was established on the northern extremity of the east breakwater at Darien Ko, Victoria Bay, Kwangtung Peninsula, China.

The light is exhibited 34 ft. above the water from a white circular stone tower.

Approx. position: Lat. 38° 56′ 12″ N., long. 121° 39′ 6″ E.

YANGTZE RIVER.—LANGSHAN CROSSING.—NORTH TREE LIGHT-BEACON MOVED. — CHANNEL DEEPENING.—The commander of the German man-of-war “Emden” reports under date of 20th December, 1911, that North Tree Light-beacon has been moved and re-established on Vine Point, Langshan Crossing, Yangtze River, China.

The same commander also reports that the channel northward of Kiang yin Shoal, in (approximately) latitude 31° 55′ N., longitude 120° 9′ E., is becoming deeper.

CALIFORNIA.

SAN DIEGO BAY.—LA PLAYA LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC TO BE CHANGED.—About 24th April, 1912, the characteristic of La Playa Light, San Diego Bay, California, will be changed from fixed white to flashing white every 10 seconds—thus, flash 2 seconds, eclipsed 8 seconds. The new light will be an acetylene light of 350 candle-power.

Approx. position: Lat. 32° 42′ 10″ N., long. 117° 14′ 6″ W.

SANTA BARBARA CHANNEL. — ANACAPA ISLAND. — LIGHT ESTABLISHED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 6 (378) of 1912, further notice is given that on 11th March, 1912, an unwatched, flashing white, acetylene light of about 530 candle-power, showing 1 group of 2 flashes every 15 seconds—thus, flash 1 second, eclipsed 3 seconds; flash 1 second, eclipsed 10 seconds—was established about 250 yards westward of the eastern end of Anacapa Island, Santa Barbara Channel, California.

The light is exhibited 185 ft. above the water from the top of a red, rectangular, skeleton, steel tower located on the bearings:—

Point Hueneme Lighthouse, 44°.

Santa Cruz Island, right tangent, 283° 30′.

Santa Barbara Lighthouse, 322°.

Approx. position: Lat. 34° 0′ 45″ N., long. 119° 21′ 45″ W.

SAN PEDRO HARBOUR.—SAN PEDRO BREAKWATER LIGHT DESTROYED.—PROVISIONAL LIGHT.—The structure supporting the fixed red light on the extremity of the breakwater at San Pedro Harbour, California, has been destroyed and the light extinguished. The station has been marked by a fixed red provisional light of about 42 candle-power exhibited from a temporary frame support.

Further notice will be given.

Approx. position: Lat. 33° 42′ 32″ N., long. 118° 15′ 4″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE.—SAN FRANCISCO LIGHT-VESSEL REPLACED ON STATION. — RELIEF LIGHT-VESSEL WITHDRAWN.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 51 (3690) of 1911, further notice is given that on 27th March, 1912, San Francisco light-vessel No. 70 was replaced on her station off the bar at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, California, and Relief light-vessel No. 76 was withdrawn.

No change has been made in the characteristics of the light or fog signals, or in the general appearance of light-vessel No. 70.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 45′ 3″ N., long. 122° 41′ 30″ W.

MILE ROCKS LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 7 (460) of 1912, further notice is given that on 30th March, 1912, the characteristic of the light exhibited at Mile Rocks Light-station, San Francisco Bay entrance, California, was changed from fixed red to intermittent white every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 2½ seconds; light 5 seconds, eclipsed 2½ seconds. The luminous power of the light was increased from 300 to 1,200 candles.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 47′ 35″ N., long. 122° 30′ 35″ W.

POINT PINOS LIGHT.—CHARACTERISTIC CHANGED.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 6 (380) of 1912, further notice is given that on 30th March, 1912, the characteristic of Point Pinos Light, sea-coast of California, was changed from fixed white to intermittent white every 30 seconds—thus, light 20 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 36° 38′ 1″ N., long. 121° 55′ 59″ W.

SAN PEDRO HARBOUR.—LIGHT TO BE CHANGED.—About 15th April, 1912, the characteristic of San Pedro Entrance Light, San Pedro Harbour, California, will be changed from 1 fixed red to 2 fixed red lights placed vertically 8 ft. apart, the lower light about 27 ft. above the water.

These lights will be shown from a mast, and as construction-work on San Pedro Breakwater Light-station proceeds the lights will be raised.

Approx. position: Lat. 33° 43′ 10″ N., long. 118° 16′ 2″ W.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY ENTRANCE. — BONITA CHANNEL.—CHANGES IN BUOYAGE.—Referring to Notice to Mariners No. 2 (77) of 1912, further notice is given that on 30th March, 1912, Bonita Channel buoy 3, a first-class tall-type can, moored in Bonita Channel, San Francisco Bay entrance, California, was replaced by a gas and bell buoy, conical in shape, surmounted by a pyramidal skeleton superstructure, and showing an intermittent white lens-lantern light every 20 seconds—thus, light 10 seconds, eclipsed 10 seconds.

Approx. position: Lat. 37° 49′ 37″ N., long. 122° 33′ W.

On the same date Bonita Channel buoy 4, a first-class tall-type nun, was replaced by a gas and whistle buoy, conical in shape, surmounted by a pyramidal skeleton superstructure, and showing an intermittent white lens-lantern light every 10 seconds—thus, light 5 seconds, eclipsed 5 seconds.
