DUSKY SOUND.—PICKERSGILL HARBOUR.—EXTENSION OF
FOUL GROUND.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 14th May, 1912.
CAPTAIN GEO. HOOPER, of the Government
steamer “Amokura,” reports that the foul ground
on the south-eastern shore of Pickersgill Harbour, Dusky
Sound, extends about half a cable to the northward of the
half-tide rock shown on the chart; and that its extreme
bears about S. 5° E. (true) or S. 22½° E. (magnetic) from
the eastern extreme of Crayfish Island. A depth of
2½ fathoms at L.W.S. was found at this position.
The bottom is very uneven, and as the locality has not
been closely examined there may be less than that depth.
The existence of the foul ground aforementioned
narrows the eastern extreme of Pickersgill Harbour to half
a cable, and not “nearly one cable,” as stated in the last
edition of the “New Zealand Pilot,” 1908.
Charts, &c., affected : Admiralty Charts Nos. 2589 and
719 ; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908,

entrance to Bluff Harbour a small cask buoy to carry lines
from dredge-moorings when not dredging has been laid
130 ft. S. 30° W. (magnetic) from rock and about 230 ft.
from line of beacons marking centre of channel.
Vessels entering or leaving port must be careful to avoid
these lines when passing. The buoy will be removed when

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that a stone
groin in connection with Mechanics’ Bay reclamation
has been started 630 ft. eastward of Parnell Jetty, and is
now approximately 300 ft. into the harbour. A black
triangular beacon will mark the end of the work.
Another stone groin will be started west of Wynyard Pier

NEW SOUNDINGS.—WHANGAREI HARBOUR.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st May, 1912.
THE Whangarei Harbour Board have notified that
careful and systematic soundings have been taken
over all the navigable part of the lower portion of
Whangarei Harbour from Passage Island to one mile
south of Busby Head. Captain Bollons, of the Govern-
ment s.s. “Hinemoa,” has also taken several lines of
soundings outside harbour entrance from Busby Head to
2½ miles south. Very little change was found from the
recorded soundings shown on the Admiralty charts, but
the contour of the coast-line in the harbour is inaccurately
plotted on the chart.
A chartlet showing the recent soundings obtained will
be published at an early date.
Charts, &c., affected : Admiralty Chart No. 2047 ;
