Notice to Candidates for Foreign-going Masters and Mates
in New Zealand.

N OTICE is hereby given that, on and after Monday,
6th January, 1913, the form of question in the
Examination of Foreign-going Masters and Mates will be
somewhat changed and varied in connection with the
problem given in the chart examination work. (See Ap-
pendix G, page 112, of Regulations relating to the
Examination of Masters and Mates.) Copies of the new
form in which the questions will be set may be seen on
application to the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine,
the Examiner of Masters and Mates, or the Officer in
Charge of Customs at the principal ports of New Zealand.

Notice to Mariners No. 28 of 1912.

UNCHARTED ROCK OFF FRANCIS HEAD, D’URVILLE ISLAND.

Wellington, N.Z., 30th March, 1912.

M R. CHARLES PERANO, master of the steamer
“Elsie,” reports sighting an uncharted rock in
the centre of the passage approaching Admiralty Bay,
between Trio Island and Francis Head (D’Urville Island).
The rock only carries 2 ft. of water over it at low-water
spring tides, and is approximately N. 23° E. magnetic
or N. 39° E. true from Francis Head or Clay Point, dis-
tance 1½ miles. This bearing gives latitude 40° 52′3″ S.,
and 174° 1′2″ E.
A search for this rock will be made by Captain Bollons
of the Government steamer “Hinemoa” on the first oppor-
tunity.

Additional Regulations prescribed for the Manufacture of
Methylated Spirits.

I N pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in me
by subsection (10) of section 35 of the Customs Law
Act, 1908, I, George Laurensen, Minister of Customs, do
hereby make the following regulations for the manufac-
ture, use, and sale of methylated spirits, such regulations
to be read with and to form part of the regulations pub-
lished under Minister’s Order No. 916 dated the 16th
day of November, 1909, and published in the New Zealand
Gazette dated the 18th day of November, 1909.

REGULATIONS.

  1. Spirit methylated by the addition of 1 per cent. of
    absolute phenol may be manufactured and sold for ex-
    clusive use in any public or private hospital, provided that
    a guarantee satisfactory to the Collector of Customs is
    given by the licensee of a private hospital, or the medical
    officer of a public hospital, that spirit delivered on such
    guarantee will be used exclusively for hospital purposes
    other than the compounding of medicines.

  2. Every receptacle containing spirit methylated with
    phenol shall be distinctly marked with the words “Methy-
    lated spirit for exclusive use in hospitals.”

  3. Every person holding for sale duty-paid methylated
    spirit made in accordance with these regulations shall,
    if required to do so, provide a room or other place of
    security, approved by the Collector of Customs, for the
    storage of such spirit under the Crown lock. He shall
    also, if so required, enter into a bond, with two sufficient
    sureties, in the form required, and shall undertake not to
    sell or dispose of any such spirit except in accordance with
    these regulations.

  4. Every manufacturer or holder for sale of methylated
    spirit made in accordance with these regulations shall keep
    a book in which he shall enter with respect to all such
    spirit the following particulars:
    (a.) The quantity manufactured.
    (b.) The date of manufacture.
    (c.) The hospital to which delivered.
    (d.) The quantity delivered.
    (e.) The date of delivery.
